Fans have waited five years, but Spider-Man is finally returning to the movies in Spider-Man: Brand New Day! Tom Holland will reprise his role as Peter Parker, and this time, he’ll be teaming up with Jon Bernthal as The Punisher and Mark Ruffalo as Hulk in the new Marvel Cinematic Universe film.
Despite having strong allies, Spider-Man is facing an incredibly challenging fight in the new sequel, which boasts a fantastic group of villains – and some surprises are still to come.
6. Scorpion
Mac Gargan, played by Michael Mando (known from Far Cry 3), first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Spider-Man: Homecoming. He was one of Vulture and Tinkerer’s clients during the ferry incident. During the fight with Spider-Man and the FBI, he was badly scarred. Later, in a mid-credits scene, he ran into Toomes (Vulture) in prison, but couldn’t convince him to join a plan for revenge.
In the comics, J. Jonah Jameson tasks Mac with spying on Spider-Man, which eventually leads to him receiving cybernetic armor and superpowers. Given that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has already shown Mac’s dislike for Spider-Man, he could be recruited by the movie’s secret villains to fight the hero, potentially transforming him into the Scorpion.
5. The Hand
The Hand, a villainous organization first seen in the Netflix series Daredevil, is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This group has been searching for immortality for centuries, and previously clashed with heroes like Daredevil and Iron Fist, as well as the rest of the Defenders. However, they were ultimately defeated, losing their power to resurrect and being trapped under New York City.
In the upcoming Brand New Day, the Hand are heading to New York and confronting Spider-Man. The trailer shows them fighting Spidey on rooftops and inside a mysterious prison, all while wearing their signature red uniforms. A key moment in the trailer reveals Peter Parker unmasked and defeated within the prison, hinting that the Hand pose a significant and ongoing danger, capable of bringing Spider-Man to his breaking point.
4. Boomerang
The trailer for the new film shows Boomerang battling Spider-Man above New York City, throwing his signature boomerangs. Originally a baseball player named Fred Myers who fell from grace, Boomerang started his criminal life by causing trouble for various heroes, both independently and while working for other villains. Surprisingly, he occasionally acted as a hero himself, even briefly living with Peter Parker as a roommate. Ultimately, he made the ultimate sacrifice to save Spider-Man.
Okay, so we still don’t know who’s actually playing Boomerang in the new movie, or how big of a part he’ll have. But the way that shot was filmed – all slow-motion and carefully framed – makes me think his appearance might just be a quick cameo, maybe as part of a montage showing what Peter’s been up to. It’s interesting because Boomerang first showed up as a villain for the Hulk in the comics, so I’m hoping they acknowledge that and have him interact with Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner – that would be a cool nod to the source material!
3. Tarantula
The trailer showed Boomerang throwing his weapon, immediately followed by Spider-Man just dodging an attack from Tarantula’s bladed boots. Tarantula, formerly a rebel leader named Anton Miguel Rodriguez, betrayed his allies and came to the United States to become a criminal. He’s a dangerous opponent thanks to his speed, fighting skills, and the sharp claws on his fingers and boots.
Similar to the fight with Boomerang, Tarantula’s battle with Spider-Man appears to be a brief, visually striking moment on a boat, possibly as part of a larger action sequence. Considering his comic book history as a mercenary, it’s probable he was specifically hired to fight Spider-Man, which would explain their confrontation.
2. Tombstone
The villain Tombstone will appear in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Marvin Jones III will play the character live on screen, having previously voiced him in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Lonnie Lincoln, the man behind Tombstone, is a notorious crime boss in New York City with incredibly tough, unbreakable skin and immense strength, which he uses to control the criminal underworld.
Tombstone, a recurring Spider-Man enemy, has a history of teaming up with villains like Kingpin and The Hand. While actor Jones III is confirmed to be playing Tombstone, his role in the upcoming movie is still a mystery. He wasn’t featured alongside Boomerang and Tarantula in released footage, suggesting he might have a more significant part to play. Considering his comic book connection to the ninja group The Hand, some fans speculate he could be the one leading them in the trailer.
1. The Department of Damage Control
The Department of Damage Control, originally created by Tony Stark to handle the aftermath of superhero battles like the one in New York, will reappear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. However, they’ve shifted from being a cleanup crew to a more confrontational force within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’ve already seen this change, as they arrested Peter Parker following the events of No Way Home and used Tony Stark’s technology to detain both Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk in their own shows.
Recently, the show Wonder Man revealed that Damage Control isn’t just cleaning up after superhero battles – they’re actively tracking and controlling superpowered individuals, and even competing for government money, which has led them to demand more arrests. Like the Sokovia Accords, Damage Control has always been a complicated part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While their stated goal is public safety, they’ve often been at odds with heroes or have inadvertently helped villains gain power, as we’ve seen in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Secret Invasion. Given their history of conflict with Spider-Man, they could easily cause trouble for him again in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
