As a seasoned Trainer who’s been through countless battles and deck iterations, I must say that the new Promo-A Jigglypuff and its ability to induce sleep has piqued my interest! It’s not every day we get a Pokémon that can put opponents to dreamland without dealing any damage.
Exploring the latest additions in Pokemon TCG Pocket’s Promo-A Vol. 2, the new Jigglypuff has ignited fresh conversations about a pivotal Special Condition: Sleep. To guide you through this interesting shift in the metagame, we’ve prepared a comprehensive guide. It begins with an easy-to-understand introduction to the Sleep status for beginners, moves on to listing cards capable of causing it, and concludes with a deck design tailored to exploit this feature. Here is all you need to know about Sleep in Pokemon TCG Pocket.
What Is “Asleep” in Pokemon TCG Pocket?
In other words, being “Asleep” is a unique situation that stops an active Pokémon from launching attacks or withdrawing. After this status has been triggered, the sleeping Pokémon must flip a coin during each subsequent checkup. If the result is tails, it remains asleep and unable to attack or retreat for another round.
In the game, if a Pokemon is asleep, it can neither attack nor withdraw. Whenever the turn of an asleep Pokemon comes up (during each Pokemon Checkup), the player whose Pokemon is asleep flips a coin. If the outcome is heads, the Pokemon wakes up; if it’s tails, it remains asleep.
In the Pokemon TCG Pocket, there are three distinct states known as Special Conditions: Asleep, Paralyzed, and Poisoned. Future updates may introduce additional conditions such as Confused and Burned.
Asleep vs. Paralyzed
The two states – being Asleep and being Paralyzed – share the common ground of preventing an attack or retreat by the enemy. However, they differ in their persistence: Being Asleep lasts until a successful coin flip ends it, whereas Paralyzed is eliminated after just one round, without any action from the enemy.
Which Cards Have the Asleep Ability?
- Jigglypuff PA-22 (Promo-A)
- Wigglytuff ex
- Vileplume
- Hypno
- Frosmoth
Prior to the Venusaur Drop Event, only four cards had the capability to induce sleep: Wigglytuff, Vileplume, Hypno, and Frosmoth. The event expanded this list by introducing a new Jigglypuff card equipped with the “Sing” ability, causing opponents to fall asleep.
In this latest Promo-A Jigglypuff, unlike all other Pokémon on the roster, it’s unique in that it doesn’t inflict the “Asleep” status by dealing damage. Instead, all other Pokemon on the list cause the “Asleep” status after they’ve dealt damage. Interestingly, Hypno’s Sleep Pendulum can inflict the “Asleep” status from the sidelines because it’s an Ability, not an Attack.
How Do You Recover from Asleep?
Three options exist for eliminating the ‘Asleep’ Special Condition: retreating, evolving, or utilizing supporter abilities.
- Evolution is the most reliable counterplay. Evolving the Active Pokemon removes all Special Conditions, including Asleep.
- Retreating removes all Special Conditions, as they only affect the Active Pokemon. However, Asleep prevents Retreats, so you’ll need to force a Retreat. For example, Koga—a Supporter card—can bench Weezing and Muk, regardless of their status effects.
- Some Supporter cards can counter Asleep. Koga, for example, forces a Retreat, which awakens the Asleep Pokemon.
Asleep cannot stack up with Paralyzed and Confused.
What Is the Best Asleep Deck?
Trying out a strong Sleep-themed deck featuring Wigglytuff EX, coupled with Frosmoth and Articuno, is an option post the launch of Promo-A Jigglypuff. Remember to obtain Ram for Frosmoth’s evolution. In terms of Trainer and Item cards, consider using Misty, Sabrina, Professor’s Research, X Speed, and Poke Ball.
Asleep Deck Details
Card | Quantity |
---|---|

Jigglypuff | 2 |
Ram | 2 |
Frosmoth | 2 |
Articuno | 2 |
Misty | 2 |
Sabrina | 2 |
X Speed | 2 |
Professor’s Research | 2 |
Poke Ball | 2 |
This deck probably won’t lead to many victories and might work best as a fun, trolling deck to frustrate your opponents. Ever since Pokemon Pocket was launched, Wigglytuff EX has found it challenging to rank high in the tier list, and even the introduction of Promo-A Jigglypuff doesn’t seem sufficient to elevate its position on the leaderboard.
Another lineup to try with the new Jigglypuff is a Hypno deck. For this, you’ll need the Drowzee-Hypno evolution line, along with Jigglypuff and Wigglytuff’s.
