What Happened To A-Life 2.0 In STALKER 2? GSC Explains Everything

As a longtime Stalker fan, I can’t help but feel a mix of disappointment and understanding regarding the current state of A-Life 2.0 in STALKER 2. I’ve been following this game since its inception, and the promise of a truly living, breathing world has always been one of the most intriguing aspects for me.

Upon the launch of STALKER 2 on November 20th, there was an anticipated feature noticeably absent: ‘A-Life 2.0’, which had been promised to create The Zone as a dynamic, autonomous environment. This advanced iteration of A-Life was intended to refine the AI mechanics from the previous STALKER games, thereby immersing players in a realistic world teeming with intelligent characters.

In STALKER 2, you won’t find A-Life 2.0 as initially mentioned on Steam, as GSC recently took it out. But, the CEO of GSC clarified to IGN about what became of A-Life 2.0 and why it’s absent from STALKER 2.

Where Did A-Life 2.0 Go?

In an interview with IGN, the CEO of GSC Game World, Ievgen Grygorovych, outlined the current status of A-Life 2.0 – a highly anticipated feature in STALKER 2. This innovative technology aimed to offer players a unique experience by presenting events that evolved independently of player input, creating an immersive environment where NPCs seemed to live their own lives, largely uninfluenced by the player’s actions.

Grygorovych said:

For this system to function efficiently, it necessitates a significantly larger play area for generating NPCs, along with a substantial increase in memory resources. We’ve been grappling with optimization. To achieve optimal performance, numerous aspects demand your resources, and you strive to eliminate unnecessary components from various angles, thereby optimizing the game effectively.

To get A-Life functioning effectively, certain aspects needed adjustments, but it doesn’t perform optimally as expected in various scenarios. Additionally, prior to launch, there were issues that arose where NPCs would spawn in the air and then fall back down. Ideally, they should appear on the terrain instead. The cause of this issue remains unknown! Furthermore, we encountered problems with the AI behavior as well.

He clarified that the team is putting in a lot of effort to ensure A-Life 2.0 becomes stable and delivers as promised; however, its current state is extremely flawed and unresponsive. In a separate remark, Maria Grygorovych, creative director at GSC, pointed fingers at the marketing department for deleting the mention of A-Life 2.0 on Steam without authorization.

She brought receipts, though. In the interview with IGN, she showed screenshots of a conversation between her and the ‘marketing person’ who removed the details on Steam. However, the team won’t put the reference back until they’ve fixed A-Life 2.0.

The incident transpired, yet the responsibility lies with GSC to rectify A-Life 2.0 and make it more akin to its originally promised version.
