As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that Todd Howard’s dream of creating an Indiana Jones game is one I’ve been eagerly anticipating since his initial pitch back in 2009. The idea of exploring the Great Circle and uncovering secrets hidden within some of the world’s most iconic landmarks has always intrigued me, much like how archaeologists must feel when they stumble upon a long-lost tomb.
There’s no denying that Bethesda’s Todd Howard is one of the most well-known auteurs in the game industry. His newest credit is on MachineGames’ new Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, a dream come true for the Fallout, Elder Scrolls, and Starfield icon. Howard tried to pitch an Indiana Jones game back in 2009, but it fell through. 15 years later, that journey is now complete and the game ships soon.
In a recent conversation with Game Rant, executive producer Jerk Gustafsson of Indiana Jones and The Great Circle discussed Howard’s contributions to the game’s creation and how the finished product aligns with Howard’s original idea. Essentially, many key concepts originated from Todd Howard, who was also an executive producer on the project. However, it was equally important in allowing MachineGames to excel at their specialty: crafting remarkable games featuring compelling narratives.
Todd Howard’s Dream Indiana Jones Game
The central theme of Howard’s Indiana Jones concept has long revolved around the notion of the significant Great Circle. In navigation, a Great Circle refers to the path on a globe that represents the shortest distance between two points. Given that Earth is round (more accurately, an oblate spheroid), this shortest distance isn’t a straight line but rather an arc. Howard was intrigued by the idea of plotting a Great Circle connecting some of the world’s most remarkable wonders and pondering the meaning behind the fact that this Great Circle would divide Earth in half.
Despite undergoing significant transformations during game development, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle largely adheres to its initial concept as detailed by Gustafsson. Collaborating with George Lucas and Howard, MachineGames developed the core idea into a comprehensive Indiana Jones adventure, as Gustafsson put it.
At MachineGames, where Todd’s concept of a thrilling tale centered on the enigmatic Great Circle was nurtured, we collaborated closely with him to flesh out his idea. Right from the beginning, we chose Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark as our primary inspiration, aiming to create an experience that evoked the spirit of Indiana Jones throughout the development process. To be truthful, we don’t often deviate from our initial plans, but with this project, we made an exception – our top priority was to ensure the story would make players feel just like they were on an adventure with Indiana Jones himself.
During the creation process of MachineGame, alterations were primarily focused on refining details and enhancing smaller aspects to ensure a harmonious flow within the overall game design, rather than significant or structural modifications to Howard’s original idea. However, one significant adjustment involved Troy Baker assuming the role of Indiana Jones. Initially, Howard had reservations about casting him, but Baker’s audition during blind tests left everyone impressed. Given the current development progress, it appears this decision was well-made.
Essentially, this game has been a dream of Howard’s in some form since 2009. Now, both Howard and MachineGames have the opportunity to reveal the mystery behind the Great Circle and explain the importance of world wonders alignment. However, it was unexpected for MachineGames, who are primarily recognized for their work on the Wolfenstein series. Gustafsson shared his initial emotions when Howard asked him to create an Indiana Jones adventure.
Over the years, our bond and esteem for each other have flourished as sister studios under the ZeniMax roof. Yet, when Todd posed the question about collaborating on a fresh Indiana Jones game, I must confess, I was taken aback – not in disbelief, but rather with profound respect. To many of us at MachineGames, the original Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark was an enchanting cinematic experience from our youth, so the prospect of working on such a legendary character was nothing short of breathtaking.
Due to the commitment shown by both MachineGames and its lead creator Howard, gamers will soon be able to reveal the enigma surrounding the famous Great Circle, experiencing the vision that Howard and his development team had for this legendary character.
