Playing games with friends, known as co-op, has been popular since the beginning of video games, and in 2026, Steam offers plenty of options. While many people think of competitive games when they think of PC gaming, cooperative games are also widely available, especially online. Finding games you can play locally with friends can be a little trickier, as Steam doesn’t always highlight that feature, but great local co-op titles do exist.
If you’re searching for games to play with friends, many people choose team-based shooters or massively multiplayer online games – and there are a lot of excellent options in those genres. But there are also many fantastic co-op games on Steam that offer different kinds of experiences.

Disclaimer & Criteria
We’re mainly focusing on co-op games that aren’t just about player-versus-player combat. For example, we’ve left out games like Counter-Strike 2 and Rainbow Six Siege X, though modes like Wingman offer some cooperative PvP options. However, we’ll make a few exceptions, particularly for newer games you might not be aware of.
We’ll be skipping online co-op games on Steam that don’t have many players, as these games are likely abandoned or losing popularity.
We Were Here
Best Free Escape Room for 2 Players
Similar to the popular co-op game Keep Talking And Nobody Explodes, We Were Here puts two players in a frozen world, but separates them. They can only talk to each other using walkie-talkies, and both players need working microphones. To find their way back together, they’ll need to solve tricky puzzles as a team, creating a unique and engaging experience.
Inspired by the popular escape room trend, We Were Here surprisingly captures the same exciting feeling. The original game was a hit and led to four follow-up titles. While none of the sequels are free, they’re all well-made and reasonably priced as a bundle.
Supermarket Together
Massive 16-Player Management and Cooperative “Broom” Justice
Since late 2024, Supermarket Together has been a hidden gem among Steam’s online co-op games, and it’s completely free to play – aside from optional cosmetic items. As the name suggests, the game lets you build and run your own grocery store. You can play by yourself, but it’s even more fun with friends!
I was really surprised by Supermarket Together! It doesn’t look super fancy, but there’s a ton to do. You can really get into the details and manage everything yourself, or if you want, you can delegate tasks to your employees. Plus, you can expand your store using Franchise Points, which is awesome. I’m really enjoying how the game keeps growing, with new stuff added all the time. The update from February 24, 2026, was a big one – it added manufacturing departments, which lets you manage things like a real industrial operation. It’s way more than just running a neighborhood shop now!
Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop
Best for Large Groups: Free 8-Player Tactical Action
Though released in 2010, Alien Swarm is often overlooked among Valve’s games. It’s actually a solid twin-stick co-op shooter, but players might be better off with Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop instead. Released in 2017, Reactive Drop continues to receive updates, unlike the original game. More importantly, the expansion successfully enhances the core gameplay experience.
Although it includes player-versus-player combat, Reactive Drop focuses mainly on cooperative gameplay. Up to eight players can tackle one of the game’s ten or more campaigns, each with a few missions. The core gameplay involves fighting increasingly difficult waves of enemies while trying to complete each level. Despite this simple premise, Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop offers surprising depth through its diverse classes and strategic gameplay. It’s not a game where you can ignore your teammates and play as a lone hero; teamwork is essential to succeed.
Where Winds Meet
Best for: Massive Open-World Exploration and Wuxia Combat
It’s amazing that a game as visually stunning as Where Winds Meet is available to play for free. After releasing in China, Everstone’s open-world RPG is now accessible worldwide, and it offers a surprisingly expansive experience.
You can enjoy Where Winds Meet as a solo adventure without needing to use the online features. If you’re ready to play with others, choose Online Mode, which has its own separate dungeons and progression system. You’ll likely switch between playing solo and online, as quests aren’t shared between the two. For playing with friends, use co-op mode – one person hosts, and everyone else joins as a guest.
Where Winds Meet is designed to be very accessible and generally excels at what it does. While enjoyable on your own, the game is most fun when played with a friend or two, as having a partner speeds up the completion of story missions – you’ll cover the same content, but faster.
Wuthering Waves
High-Skill Boss Hunting and Echo Farming for 3 Players
It took a while for Wuthering Waves to come to Steam, but the wait was worthwhile – the game is in much better shape now than it was at launch. When it first came out, opinions were mixed. While the graphics and gameplay were okay, they weren’t outstanding. The story still isn’t a strong point, but Wuthering Waves arguably has the best combat system of any free-to-play gacha game, and moving around the world is really fun. If you’re looking for a free open-world action RPG, it’s definitely worth checking out – you don’t have much to lose!
Wuthering Waves lets up to three players team up and share a world, with one player hosting. Everyone controls the same character, and having allies can help with tough bosses, though the game isn’t overly challenging. However, the co-op feature isn’t a major draw, as you need to reach Union Level 22 before you can even unlock it – that’s a significant time commitment if you’re mainly interested in playing with friends.

Rec Room
A Limitless Sandbox with 12 Million+ Player-Created Worlds
Rec Room is unique because it’s a social platform where you can both play games created by others and build your own to share with friends. While virtual reality enhances the experience, it’s not required – you can play on a PC with Steam. The games available, called ‘rooms,’ are incredibly diverse, ranging from different genres and styles to varying lengths and levels of seriousness.
Beyond the huge number of games players build themselves, Rec Room also features original games made by the developers. These games are typically enjoyable and showcase the platform’s creative potential. Great examples to check out include Isle of Lost Skulls, Quest for the Golden Trophy, and The Curse of the Crimson Cauldron.
Team Fortress 2
Timeless Class-Based Co-op for Low-End PCs and Steam Deck
Team Fortress 2 is best known for its player-versus-player combat, which also involves teamwork. If you’re looking for a free, competitive game to play with friends, this Valve classic is still a fantastic choice and looks set to remain popular for years to come. Teams can have varying numbers of players depending on the game mode, with the largest battles featuring 12 players on each side.
If you’d rather not compete against other players, Team Fortress 2 offers a cooperative mode called “Mann vs. Machine” with two options. “Mann Up” lets you play for rewards, but it costs money – you need a special ticket to participate. “Boot Camp” is completely free and offers the same gameplay, but you won’t earn any rewards. So, if you just want to enjoy a horde mode with friends without worrying about getting new weapons, choose “Boot Camp.” If you’re hoping to unlock a specific weapon, you’ll need to pay to play “Mann Up.”
I absolutely love Mann vs. Machine! It’s a mode where up to six of us team up and fight endless waves of robots. We work through a mission, and then even complete a whole Tour of Duty if we’re good! The best part is, you get to play as all the same classes you do in regular Team Fortress 2, and you earn credits during each run to upgrade your gear and keep getting stronger.
I really enjoyed playing “Mann vs. Machine” in Team Fortress 2 when it first came out around the early 2010s. However, I’ve had a hard time getting back into it lately. I haven’t tried endlessly, but the matchmaking can be quite frustrating.
With You
Best for: Couples and Intimate 2-Player Collaboration
I recently played With You, and it’s such a sweet game! It’s a co-op puzzle-platformer designed for two players, and it’s all about working together. You and another player control a couple who have to solve puzzles by using physics, platforming, and, honestly, a lot of jumping on each other! It really emphasizes gentle communication and teamwork to get through each level. It’s just a really wholesome experience.
With its simple, slightly awkward controls, With You is a game focused on strengthening the connection between two players – and physically bringing them closer. It’s a short experience, but enjoyable while it lasts.
Once Human
Best for: Massive Open-World Survival and Cosmic Horror Raids
Despite a few imperfections, Once Human is a remarkable open-world survival game that’s definitely worth checking out. The game takes place in a world overrun by an alien infestation, caused by greedy corporations, which has twisted people, animals, and the environment. Players take on the role of meta-humans fighting to survive and uncover the source of this disaster.
I’ve been really enjoying playing Once Human, and while it’s totally doable solo – and honestly, that isolation really adds to the survival feel – the developers also included both PvP and co-op modes. The PvP is kind of hit or miss, and you can pretty much avoid it if you want, even when playing online. But co-op? That’s where the game really shines, even though the way they’ve set it up isn’t perfect. Overall, teaming up with friends definitely makes the experience better.
You can team up with friends in Once Human by creating a Party, Hive, or Warband. While all three work, a Hive is often the best choice if you plan to play through the game together, as it lets you progress as a cohesive group. Playing with friends also helps with the game’s repetitive elements, making the experience more enjoyable.
Since its somewhat rocky start in 2024, Once Human has improved dramatically. Major updates to the game’s systems, along with a planned series of content releases throughout 2026 called ‘Year of the Monsters,’ have been key to this progress.
