Normal-type Pokémon are very common throughout the Pokémon world. You can often find them in grassy areas, like Skitty in the Hoenn region, or near trees, such as Pidgey. Many new trainers start their journey with at least one Normal-type Pokémon, like Bidoof or Starly. Ash Ketchum was one of them, catching a Pidgeotto early in his adventures.
Ever since Ash first encountered a Bird Pokémon, he’s caught many Pokémon—though not many of the Normal type. He’s assembled a fantastic team, featuring strong Pokémon like the Fire/Dark-type Incineroar and the speedy Grass-type Sceptile. While he hasn’t caught many Normal-type Pokémon, he has encountered a few, including the powerful but sleepy Snorlax and the fast and competitive Swellow. His team is really diverse!
7. Ash Caught a Giant Horde of Tauros in Kanto
Professor Oak Looks After Every Tauros in His Lab
Tauros is often considered the male version of Miltank and originally comes from the Kanto region. However, in the Paldea region, Tauros is a Fighting-type Pokémon that can also be found as Water or Fire-type, depending on its breed. These Pokémon are known for being quick-tempered and have a habit of charging suddenly. If many Tauros get angry together, they’re likely to cause a stampede. Trainer Ash owns a group of thirty Tauros, who are looked after by Professor Oak.
In the Pokémon episode “The Legend of Dratini” (which only aired in Asia), Ash goes to the Safari Zone hoping to catch a variety of Pokémon. However, he mostly ends up catching Tauros! While Tauros are usually seen in herds, Ash specifically chose one to help him compete in the Orange League. This Tauros turned out to be a valuable teammate, even managing to beat a Venusaur in one battle.
6. Unfezant Was the First Pokémon Ash Caught in Unova
She Has Since Grown Into a Loyal and Helpful Battler
In the Unova region, Unfezant, the local bird Pokémon, looks different depending on whether it’s male or female. Male Unfezant have a mask-like pattern on their heads, while females don’t, but are generally stronger fliers. Ash’s first Pokémon in Unova is a female Pidove, which evolves into Tranquill while defending against a group of Venipede. Later, during a battle with Gym Leader Skyla, Tranquill further evolves into an Unfezant.
Unfezant is generally a peaceful Pokémon and usually chooses to run away from trouble rather than fight. But when it comes to training and battling, she’s incredibly dedicated. She’s even been known to help other Pokémon improve, like when she assisted an Archeops that Professor Juniper and Fennel had revived. Similar to her Trainer, Unfezant is confident, has a strong sense of right and wrong, and always tries to lend a helping wing.
5. Staraptor Absolutely Loves Battling
The Normal/Flying-type Has a Fierce and Swift Fighting Style
If you’re exploring the Sinnoh region, you’re likely to find lots of Starly hiding in the tall grass. These Pokémon aren’t very strong on their own, so they usually travel in large groups. When a Starly evolves, it becomes a Staravia and gets much more powerful. And Staravia’s evolved form, Staraptor, is even stronger – it even gained a special Mega Evolution in the Pokémon Legends: Z-A DLC.
Ash’s first Pokémon in the Sinnoh region, Staraptor, began as a helpful Starly who often scouted ahead. When it evolved into Staravia, it became much more eager to battle, even getting frustrated if Ash didn’t choose it for a fight. This attitude changed again when it finally became Staraptor. Fully evolved, it mastered powerful moves like Brave Bird and Aerial Ace, and was very proud of how strong it had become since its days as a tiny Starly.
4. Swellow Is a Very Impressive Fighter
The Swallow Pokémon Is Even Resistant to Electric-type Attacks
Ash’s Swellow started as a Taillow and was known for its strong will to win. Even though it was a Normal and Fighting-type Pokémon—making it vulnerable to Electric and Rock attacks—Swellow always welcomed a tough battle and wasn’t scared to face them. Ash recognized this and let Taillow, and later Swellow, participate in difficult fights, like the one against Tate and Liza, which Swellow ultimately won.
Swellow has a surprising ability to withstand Electric-type attacks, which played a part in the creation of a special move seen only in the anime called Thunder Armor. During a battle against Tate and Liza, Swellow and Pikachu worked together to overcome their strong Pokémon. Pikachu used its Thunder attack to cover both itself and Swellow in a golden light, boosting their Speed and Attack. This clever strategy helped Ash win the battle.
3. Ash’s Snorlax Has a Legendary Appetite
Snorlax Has Amazing Stamina and a Useful Movepool
Snorlax is a well-loved Pokémon and was one of the first 151 originally introduced in the very first games. Like its earlier form, Munchlax, Snorlax enjoys eating a lot! However, while Munchlax is usually energetic, Snorlax is often found sleeping when it’s not snacking. Its huge size gives it special abilities like Immunity, protecting it from poison, and Thick Fat, which makes it very resistant to Ice and Fire attacks. It can even eat Berries faster than usual with its Gluttony ability. Snorlax are also surprisingly good swimmers, as seen in the Pokémon anime.
While traveling through the Orange Islands, Ash encountered a Snorlax living in the Grapefruit Islands. This Snorlax’s endless eating was causing problems for the local islands, but Ash eventually caught it. After that, Snorlax frequently joined Ash on his journeys. Despite being lazy and a big eater, Snorlax is a strong and dependable Pokémon in battle. It’s incredibly powerful and surprisingly agile, and can use moves like Body Slam, Ice Punch, and even the powerful Hyper Beam – a move often seen in battles between top Pokémon Champions.

2. Pidgeot Is One of Ash’s Oldest and Most Loyal Friends
Pidgeot Later Left the Team for a While To Protect Other Bird Pokémon.
Pidgey was the very first Pokémon bird introduced in the Kanto region. At the beginning of his adventure, Ash initially wanted to catch a Pidgey, but he ended up with Pidgeotto, its evolved form, instead. Pidgeotto was a reliable teammate, always eager to battle and never causing Ash any trouble. As a Normal/Flying-type Pokémon, it was a strong fighter, frequently using moves like Wing Attack and Gust.
Over time, Ash used Pidgeotto less and less in battles, favoring Pokémon like Bulbasaur and Squirtle. Eventually, Pidgeotto evolved into Pidgeot during a fierce fight with a Fearow that was attacking a group of Pidgey. Wanting to protect those Pidgey, Pidgeot left Ash’s team for a long period. After Ash won the Masters Eight Tournament, Pidgeot returned to rescue Ash and Pikachu from Team Rocket. Pidgeot happily rejoined Ash’s team, especially because the Pidgey it had protected had grown and evolved themselves.
1. Ash’s Noctowl Was a Powerhouse in His Johto Roster
Noctowl Is Famous for Being Ash’s Only Known Shiny Pokémon
Similar to the Pokémon games, seeing Shiny Pokémon in the anime is quite rare. A well-known example is the Shiny Metagross belonging to Steven Stone, a strong Steel and Psychic-type Pokémon that can Mega Evolve. However, before Shiny Mega Metagross appeared, fans were introduced to Ash’s Shiny Noctowl. This Normal and Flying-type Pokémon was originally targeted by Team Rocket, but Ash managed to catch it through a regular Pokémon battle with the help of Pikachu.
Noctowl, like many of Ash’s flying Pokémon, was a reliable scout. It had a remarkably strong Hypnosis attack, and could even create illusions to help or frighten other Pokémon. During Ash’s adventures in the Johto region, Noctowl showed it was both smart and kind, sharing Ash’s strong sense of what’s right and wrong. Later, they met again in Sinnoh, where Noctowl used its psychic abilities during the Lily of the Valley Conference.
