Elfhelm is no more, and the spiritual realm has vanished. Griffith has taken Casca to Falconia, leaving Guts overwhelmed by despair as the story of Berserk heads toward a terrifying conclusion. Volume 42 of Berserk, released last March, ended with the Kushan Empire attacking the Seahorse, and Guts deeply traumatized by Griffith’s actions – so much so that he can’t even lift his sword, the Dragonslayer. Now, over a year later, Volume 43 of Kentaro Miura’s acclaimed manga will be released on October 27, 2026, and will include chapters 374 to 382.
Only one chapter of Berserk remains unreleased, and Volume 43 will be the last for the foreseeable future. Kouji Mori and Studio Gaga are carefully working to continue the story using notes left by Kentaro Miura. As Guts faces his most desperate situation yet, and with a devastating event looming, this current arc, known as Eastern Exile, is becoming the darkest chapter in Berserk in many years.
Guts Lets Go of All Hope in Berserk Volume 43
Volume 43 of Berserk is likely to be a difficult read for longtime fans. Following the events of Volume 42, Guts is deeply depressed and has lost his will to live. This volume, part of the Eastern Exile arc, expands the world of Berserk and introduces new characters as the Kushan Empire prepares for a major war with Griffith and Falconia.
Chapters 374 to 382 really expand the world, deliver exciting battles, and push Guts to his emotional limits. While we know from the beginning of the story that Guts will become the Black Swordsman, this arc – the Eastern Exile – makes it feel like everything is falling apart, and Guts is losing the last of his motivation.
Dark Horse’s description for Berserk Volume 43 reads,
I watched as the crew of the Seahorse, barely having survived the disaster at Elf Island, were suddenly confronted by raiders. It quickly became clear we weren’t just dealing with pirates, though – we’d accidentally sailed into the territory of the massive Kushan Empire!
Lost in his own despair, Guts doesn’t seem to react as the Kushan soldiers drag him away in chains, even while the other survivors – Roderick, Farnese, Serpico, Morda, Isidro, Schierke, and the rest – are taken in as refugees. However, they don’t find safety on land either, because the Kushan tribes are holding a major meeting to discuss going to war—against Falconia and its powerful leader, Griffith, known as the Hawk of Light!
The council’s internal conflicts are treacherous, but an even greater threat looms: Griffith’s influence is spreading through deadly magic. At this crucial time, Guts’ friends can’t count on him for assistance…and they begin to wonder if he’s actually the cause of their troubles.
The upcoming 43rd volume of Berserk will feature a full-color, fold-out illustration, a message from the current author, Kouji Mori, and a bonus comic strip dedicated to the memory of Kentaro Miura. As this iconic dark fantasy manga series nears its climax, fans should be prepared for Guts to face his most challenging and desperate moments yet.
Berserk Volume 43 releases October 27, 2026 for $14.99.
