Alrighty there, partner! I’ve been through some hair-raisin’, tooth-grindin’ battles in my time, but let me tell ya, Glohm Pipegunk from Brothership is one tough cookie. With his speed and ability to heal, you better bring your A-game and then some if you want to take him down.

Restoring Concordia is no small task, so it’s understandable that Mario and Luigi need a moment of respite from their island-linking and lighthouse duties during their journey. After all, even the bravest heroes require a brief pause to catch their breath!

Instead of pausing the battle against bosses… to engage in yet another round of boss fights? Seems less like a prize and more like additional labor!

Indeed, defeating the enhanced version of Glohm Pipegunk in the third and concluding boss battle of Brothership is no small feat. But once you’ve triumphed, why not unwind by visiting Jellyfish Island’s resort for some well-deserved relaxation and rejuvenation?

Starting The Sidequest

Dewey is very impressed if you manage to win.

To begin this side quest and encounter the boss, you should follow the footsteps of your past conflict with Glohm Sharpcask by making a trip to Dewey Fightem on Shipshape Island. There, he will brief you about the current threat that Glohm Pipegunk poses in the Brrrning Sea’s Great Lighthouse, prompting you to set out and eliminate it.

To access this side mission, you should first defeat both characters named Glohm Gobblick and Glohm Sharpcask. Additionally, make sure you finish the main story quest titled “Two Geniuses, One Engine” prior to starting this sidequest.

After I’ve successfully connected with Jellyfish Island, here’s the next adventure that unfolds: As soon as this quest is completed, I’ll gain the ability to teleport Shipshape Island to various currents scattered across Concordia.

Apart from the fresh batch of side missions, such as confronting Glohm Pipegunk, you’ll find yourself, and here’s an exciting twist – if victorious, Dewey will reward you with one of the top-notch boots in the game, only second best!

Reaching Glohm Pipegunk

In the depths beneath the base of the Grand Lighthouse at the Brrrning Sea lies where you previously clashed swords with Glohm Pipegunk. Upon arriving, make your way towards the dungeon’s entrance and secure the Green Warp Pipe to quickly descend to the boss chamber.

The Recovery Block is located close to the Green Pipe, but the closest Save Block is situated slightly to the south. Remember to run towards the south and save before initiating the boss battle!

When prepared for combat, make your way to the door to the north, then follow the stairs to encounter Glohm Pipegunk.

Right after Glohm Pipegunk, you’ll find a Question Block containing a 1-Up DX. Moving east from there, another Question Block awaits with Celebrity Wear equipment inside. I overlooked these items during my initial run of the dungeon as they lay beyond the boss; now is an excellent opportunity to grab them!

Preparing For The Fight

In simpler terms, battling Glohm Pipegunk isn’t just one of Dewey’s toughest boss fights; he’s generally considered one of the most challenging bosses within the game itself. Despite not being overly mysterious or elusive, Glohm Pipegunk can certainly push you to your limits, with a suggested player level of 43.

Instead, Brothership advises reaching level 44 prior to engaging the final boss battle. Indeed, Glohm Pipegunk is no walk in the park.

See to it that you have a good supply of essentials such as Power-ups, Sweeteners, and Nutrients at hand. Feel free to use your top-tier items during the battle – remember, this is why you’ve kept them in reserve!

In case the game isn’t giving you enough healing items, make sure to gather some Refreshing Herbs if you find yourself running low. Glohm Pipegunk is known for causing multiple types of debilitating conditions.

Specifically, don’t hesitate to employ the seldom-used candy pieces during your fight against Glohm Pipegunk. These items offer a unique blend of healing both HP and BP, making them the most effective in the game (although you can’t purchase these candies directly).

Battle Plugs

In the game, Glohm Pipegunk’s assaults can cause three distinct conditions: Burn, Ice, and Glohm. I personally find Glohm to be the most detrimental since it restricts the usage of Bros. Attacks or Luigi Logic, but it’s clear that none of them are beneficial in any way.

As you prepare for the upcoming fight, having Glohm Guard at your side will undoubtedly be beneficial in avoiding that unwanted status. After clashing with Zokket, you’ll acquire this Battle Plug as a reward.

If you haven’t encountered Zokket yet, the Auto Ampberry plug could be a useful substitute, particularly when teamed up with Boomerang Items to conserve your precious Ampberry supply.

To avoid having the Burn and Ice status afflictions, consider using the Temperature Shield. It’s not crucial to equip it before the battle begins, as Glohm Pipegunk only delivers elemental damage when he moves into either the fiery or frozen areas of the arena.

I used this all-purpose build going into the fight. Swapping Auto Herb for Auto Ampberry, Auto Syrup, or Auto 1-Up is quick and easy.

If you’re aiming to limit the number of Battle Plug outlets dedicated to defense, the Auto Herb plug could be a versatile choice for you. Although it can’t prevent the occurrence of status effects, utilizing a Refreshing Herb at no cost on each brother’s turn can significantly reduce their impact. Do bear in mind that a Refreshing Herb only has a 50% chance to cure Glohm!

During this battle, the pairing of Spirited Items and Deluxe Items is a potent duo. In combat, your Auto plugs will wield more effective gear, and on top of that, you’ll receive bonus benefits at no extra cost!

Your offensive Battle Plugs are pretty straight-forward:

  • Anti-Glohm Specialist turns your Jump and Hammer attacks into critical hits
  • Use Fiery Attack and Icy Attack for bonus damage, depending on the boss’s element
  • And of course, Bros. Boost is great for clobbering Glohm Pipegunk

Regularly changing your Battle Plugs can be beneficial and shouldn’t make you feel embarrassed! Since it doesn’t consume a turn, feel free to experiment. I’ve discovered that managing Battle Plugs effectively has significantly helped me defeat Brothership’s tougher bosses.

Battling Glohm Pipegunk

Glomh Pipegunk continues in the tradition of his forerunners, merely being a swifter, more vicious iteration of the initial leader. Unlike many battles with bosses within the fraternity, this one proves challenging to conquer through careful tactics and gradual progress.

In a battle, it’s crucial to focus on defensive strategies – ensuring both characters stay alive gives you a chance to showcase your top skills. However, don’t forget that Glohm Pipegunk also has healing capabilities. When engaged in an elemental arena, the boss can recover around 500 HP during his turn.

In the final stages, such a considerable quantity of health isn’t insignificant! Since Luigi Logic activates when a boss reaches a specific health level, Glohm Pipegunk’s consistent healing mechanisms complicate strategies that aim to gradually wear him down compared to other boss battles.

Make sure to use efficient high-damage Bros. Attacks like Mario’s Red Shell or Luigi’s Jump Helmet to put down consistent damage. Save as much BP as you can for Glohm Pipegunk’s stun phase.

Overwhelmed, employ the Bros. Boost plug and unleash powerful moves such as Mario’s Clockout Blow or Luigi’s Yoohoo Cannon to whittle down Glohm Pipegunk’s health points.

Luigi Logic

I love Clockout Blow—anime as hell, and does a ton of damage too.

In the skirmish, an enigmatic duplicate of Shun (hailing from Zokket’s Extension Squad henchmen) emerges, manipulating his device to transform the battleground’s terrain. Similar to their previous encounter, Luigi Logic allows you to seize control and adjust the environment yourself.

Whenever you switch the battlefield to an environment contrary to Glohm Pipegunk’s natural element, it will weaken and stun the boss. This gives you an opportunity to inflict critical damage using your Bros.’ attacks.

In a fortunate turn of events, the mini-game resembles the initial skirmish quite closely. However, to snatch Shun’s remote, you’ll need to press B more frequently than before, but the enhanced challenge isn’t as significant as the battle itself.

After you’ve liquefied Glohm Pipegunk into a pool of goo, you’ll receive as your prize a Rainbow Token (valued at an impressive 10,000 Coins!). Be sure to drop by Shipshape Island to wrap up the quest and earn yourself a fresh new pair of shoes for stomping around!
