Since releasing Windrose on PC in Early Access, the developers at Kraken Express have been receiving many questions about a potential console version. The game, set in the age of pirates, has gone through a significant transformation. It began as Crosswind, initially planned as a free-to-play MMO with player-versus-player combat. However, it later evolved into the survival/adventure game we see today and switched to a paid model.
Even though the developers made a major change during production, the risk was worth it. Windrose quickly gained a large player base after its Early Access launch. In just the first two days on Steam, over 500,000 people played the game, despite knowing it will be updated for a long time. The developers at Kraken Express are still actively listening to player feedback and releasing updates and fixes. While the game is already popular, it’s notable that these numbers are only from Steam, and players on PlayStation and Xbox are hoping it will be released on those consoles too.
Will Windrose Come to Consoles?
Ever since Windrose blew up at Steam Next Fest – seriously, 17,000 people checked it out and the reviews were amazing! – everyone’s been asking Kraken Express about a possible console release. I’ve definitely been one of them! Right now, they’ve confirmed Windrose is coming to PC through Steam, but they’re asking us to follow their official channels if we want to hear about other platforms down the line. So, fingers crossed for a console version eventually!
A representative recently told Gamespot that there are no new announcements regarding a console release for Windrose at this time. The team is still aiming to bring the game to consoles eventually, but their priority is finishing the 1.0 version of Windrose. Considering the game is currently in Early Access and could remain so for up to two and a half years, console players may have a while to wait.
Console gamers have a promising new option on the horizon, as Ubisoft officially revealed Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. However, the excitement was quickly tempered by news of company layoffs and restructuring, and Ubisoft hasn’t shared many updates about the game since the initial announcement.

Despite a lack of official confirmation, rumors suggest the upcoming game isn’t just a visual update. Many sources hint at substantial changes and new content drawn from the original Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. If the rumors are true, fans might be able to play the revamped game as early as July 9th, offering a fresh take on Edward Kenway’s story.
