Throughout his adventures, Ash has caught and trained many different Pokémon. Though Pikachu is his most famous and dependable partner, Ash has often needed help from other Pokémon along the way. He’s worked with all sorts of types, but he seems to particularly enjoy using Fire-type Pokémon.
Ash Ketchum has had several powerful Fire-type Pokémon throughout his journey, including favorites like Infernape and Charizard. Let’s take a look at all of his Fire-types and see how well they performed as part of his team.
Torkoal
Ash’s Torkoal was a bit of a character, always showing its feelings and providing some fun, lighthearted scenes. While it stands out as a memorable Pokémon from his team in the Hoenn region, it wasn’t his strongest Fire-type Pokémon.
I always felt a little bad for Torkoal in the anime! It wasn’t weak, exactly, but its battles were a bit of a mixed bag. It had some really good wins, but it kept running into seriously powerful Pokémon like Brandon’s Registeel and Tobias’s Darkrai, which was tough. It definitely contributed to Ash’s team, and when things clicked, it was great, but it just didn’t quite have the consistent strength to be considered one of his top Pokémon, and some matchups were just brutal for it.
Pignite
Throughout his adventures, Ash has befriended many starter Pokémon, occasionally catching more than one in each new region. While some of these Pokémon became central members of his team, others provided valuable support. His Pignite is a good example of a Pokémon that played a supporting role.

Pignite achieved some notable victories with Ash, notably defeating the Emboar and Heatmor previously owned by its former Trainer. While its overall win-loss record was fairly balanced, Pignite proved valuable as a durable Pokémon on Ash’s team, capable of enduring attacks and securing wins when necessary.
Quilava
Cyndaquil was one of the first Pokémon Ash obtained in the Johto region, but it took a long time to evolve. It didn’t become a Quilava until around 500 episodes after it was first introduced in the series.
I always loved Ash’s Cyndaquil! It was amazing how well it did, even though it stayed a Cyndaquil for so long. It actually beat some really tough opponents, like Jasmine’s Steelix and even Pryce’s Dewgong, which was incredible! Then, when it finally evolved into Quilava, it went head-to-head with Nando’s Armaldo and they both knocked each other out – you could really see how much stronger it had become. It was definitely a dependable teammate for Ash during his Johto journey, though it wasn’t quite as powerful as some of his other Fire-types.
Talonflame
Ash’s Talonflame began its journey as a Fletchling and became a dependable Pokémon during their adventures in the Kalos region. It consistently proved to be a strong team member, stepping up whenever Ash needed it. One of Talonflame’s most notable achievements in the anime was its ability to match the speed of a wild Moltres, even putting up a good fight before eventually being defeated.
Talonflame is one of Ash’s fastest Pokémon and has been a key player in many of his Gym battles. While it wasn’t the most visually impressive Fire-type Ash has owned, Talonflame consistently delivered when it mattered most, and even in losses, always fought bravely, proving itself a valuable team member.
Incineroar
Litten, one of Ash’s Pokémon, quickly became a fan favorite thanks to its touching backstory involving a kind, older Stoutland. Once it joined Ash’s team, Litten proved to be one of his most valuable Pokémon during their adventures in the Alola region.
With a strong 6-3 record, Incineroar proved to be a valuable asset to Ash’s team, securing some impressive victories. Its ability to utilize Z-Moves made it stand out as particularly effective, surpassing other Fire-type Pokémon Ash has battled with.
Infernape
Deciding which of Ash’s Fire-type Pokémon is the best often comes down to Infernape and Charizard. Both performed very well in battles and were consistently among his strongest. Interestingly, they share a similar backstory – Ash rescued both after they were mistreated by their previous trainers. Infernape, in particular, used to belong to Paul, one of Ash’s biggest rivals in the anime.
Watching Ash’s Pokémon journey, I always thought Infernape was his most reliable partner in the Sinnoh region. Its Blaze ability was a real game-changer, helping it win even when the odds were stacked against it. It consistently went above and beyond, pushing its limits, and ultimately became Ash’s strongest Pokémon in Sinnoh, without a doubt.
Charizard
Charizard, one of Ash’s most famous Pokémon, began as the friendly Charmander. As it evolved into Charmeleon and then Charizard, its personality became more difficult. While Charizard eventually reconciled with Ash, its rebellious behavior initially held it back from reaching its full potential.
Charizard and Infernape had comparable battle records, but Charizard is considered Ash’s strongest Fire-type Pokémon. A major highlight was its victory over Noland’s Articuno, a legendary Pokémon – a feat very few Pokémon have achieved. Even in defeat, Charizard fought with incredible effort and challenged its opponents, making it a truly valuable asset to Ash’s team and solidifying its place as his best Fire-type Pokémon.
