Microsoft Rewards is undergoing a major update in May, and early signs suggest it won’t be beneficial for users. Originally launched as Bing Rewards, the program was later combined with Xbox Live Rewards in 2016 and 2018, and has seen numerous changes over the years – with more on the way.
A change that upset many Microsoft Rewards users happened in late February 2025 when the program required more points to redeem Xbox gift cards. Because users earn points by using Rewards and completing its activities, the value of those rewards has always been a point of discussion, and this change understandably caused frustration.
Microsoft Rewards is Getting Big Changes in May 2026, But Early Adopters Don’t Like The Rework
Many users felt Microsoft Rewards declined in quality starting in February 2026, but more changes are still rolling out. The biggest update, coming in May, is a new membership system with three levels: Member, Silver, and Gold. These tiers will allow you to earn up to 15, 30, or 60 points per day, respectively. Microsoft promises that Gold members can earn up to seven times more points and that there will be more earning opportunities overall. However, early testers in countries like New Zealand, Colombia, and Canada haven’t had a positive experience with the changes.
Microsoft is currently updating its Rewards program in several European countries, including Germany, France, Italy, and the UK. Early feedback suggests the changes make it harder to earn points. The daily point limit has been reduced from 150 to 60, and a potential bonus of up to 2100 points seems difficult to achieve for most users. It’s still too soon to say if this update will be considered a misstep for the Xbox Series X|S.
As a long-time Microsoft Rewards user, I’ve been following the changes closely, and honestly, the initial reaction from users in places like New Zealand isn’t good. It seems like the things you can actually get with your points are now way more expensive, and everyone’s reporting that they’re earning far fewer points overall. Microsoft has a real uphill battle if they want to convince us this new system is actually better.

Microsoft is making big changes to many of its services that customers use directly, including how it handles games exclusive to Xbox. Sources say the company is even rethinking its strategy around these exclusive titles. If Microsoft were to focus more on console-exclusive games again, it would be a major shift from its recent direction and could signal even larger changes coming for Xbox and Microsoft as a whole.
