This article discusses details from episode 3 of Akane-banashi, titled “Senior Apprentices,” which is currently available on YouTube. Be aware that it contains spoilers!
While Akane-banashi hasn’t become as popular as shows like Witch Hat Atelier or Re:Zero Season 4 just yet, it’s still one of the strongest new anime this season. It could gain even more viewers when it starts streaming on Netflix worldwide next month.
Akane is a new Rakugo performer, still at the beginning of her career, even after years of training with Master Shiguma. She hasn’t yet chosen a professional stage name. Becoming a Rakugoka involves much more than just performing; beginners also spend a lot of time doing basic tasks before they get to perform on stage.
Akane Is Still a Trainee for Now
The episode starts with a meeting where Master Shiguma formally asks Akane’s mother, Masaki, for permission to take Akane on as his apprentice, following his decision revealed in the previous episode. Shiguma feels anxious because he hasn’t seen Masaki since the day her brother, Tohru (and Shinta), was removed from the world of Rakugo.
Masaki isn’t thrilled Akane is pursuing a career in Rakugo, but she supports her daughter’s decision and won’t stand in her way. Though Tohru is away in Tokyo for work, he seems to feel similarly, though the situation might not be as straightforward as it appears. Akane hadn’t kept her ‘unofficial lessons’ with Shiguma a secret from her family.
Because Akane is still a high school student, Shiguma has decided to let her train as an intern until she graduates in a few months. After that, she’ll officially become his apprentice. For now, Akane will be mentored by one of Shiguma’s current apprentices, and Kyoji has volunteered to guide her.
Learning How to “Anticipate Needs”
Although Akane is new to performing, Shiguma gives her the go-ahead to take the stage. During her second show, she notices a difference from her first. She’s giving it her all, but the audience isn’t reacting as strongly as she’d hoped. While her performance isn’t poor and she receives some good comments, she feels like something is missing and realizes she needs more practice to truly shine.
Kyoji explains to Akane that to truly excel, she needs to learn to understand what the audience wants before they ask for it – to proactively give them what they need, rather than waiting for requests. As he’ll be away for a week, he proposes an unusual training exercise: he wants a friend to temporarily bring Akane on staff at his izakaya (Japanese pub) to help her develop this skill.
If you want people to like you, then first you have to accept them.

Initially, Akane believes she’s simply learning basic customer service skills. However, she gradually realizes the true lesson: it’s not about imposing your own preferences on people, but about understanding their needs. This means every interaction or performance should be tailored to the specific audience, making each experience unique.
What to Expect for Episode 4
Based on how the story is unfolding, this season appears to be about Akane’s training and growth as she works towards becoming an apprentice before the school year ends. We can expect to see her handling everyday tasks and learning the ropes. A second season, if it happens, would probably show her progressing to become a Zenza, which is the first official rank in Rakugo. The next episode will likely continue with the relaxed, everyday feel we saw in this one.
Considering Akane-banashi is currently a top-performing manga in Shonen Jump (though Kagurabachi is quickly gaining popularity and may soon surpass it), a second season seems highly probable.
Akane-banashi Episode 4 Release Date & Where to Watch
The next episode is scheduled to come out on April 25, 2026, unless there are unexpected delays. Viewers in the Americas can watch the anime for free on the official YouTube channel with subtitles in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. In France and across Europe, new episodes are being added on ADN as they premiere in Japan. It’s also available with subtitles on Netflix Asia.
The anime series will be available worldwide on Netflix in May. They plan to release episodes weekly with multiple dubbed language options from the start. This release strategy is a bit different for Netflix, and they seem to be testing it out. They probably believe having the dubs ready at launch is better than adding them later. It remains to be seen if this approach will pay off, as Akane-banashi has the potential to be even more popular than Frieren.
