One such aspect that remains unaltered in Path of Exile 2 is Item Rarity, which was also a feature in the initial game.

There are four different tiers of Item Rarity in Path of Exile 2, and several Currencies that you can use to upgrade your gear from Normal to Magic to Rare in this simple ARPG system. This guide explains the Item Rarity system in Path of Exile 2, including details on how to upgrade Items in PoE 2 using these specific currencies.

All Path of Exile 2 Item Rarities

In Path of Exile 2, there are four types of item rarity: Common, Magic, Rare, and Unique. Each of these items in PoE 2 comes with a set of properties or characteristics, known as Modifiers, that differ in quantity based on the item’s rarity level.

  • Normal Items: White text, no Modifiers except base weapon stats.
    • Most common type of item drop.
  • Magic Items: Blue text, comes with at least 1x random Modifier.
    • Less common, typically drops from elites and chests.
  • Rare Items: Yellow text, comes with at least 3x random Modifiers.
    • Very uncommon, can drop randomly from enemies, but especially bosses and high-level chests.

It’s possible to elevate Normal and Enchanted items to higher levels (Enchanted and Rare), and also enhance them with specific attributes at each level. However, the acquisition of Exceptional equipment is limited to particular sources only.

How To Upgrade Item Rarity In PoE 2

In Path of Exile 2, it’s impossible to enhance a Rare item into a Unique one using the same type of currency, as the Rare tier is the highest level you can elevate an item to.

You can acquire Orb of Transmutation and Regal Orb currencies in three different methods:

  • By Disenchanting Magic (blue) items, you will acquire Transmutation Shards.
    • When you get 10x Shards, you will create a full Orb of Transmutation.
  • By Disenchanting Rare (yellow) items, you will acquire Regal Shards.
    • When you get 10x Shards, you will create a full Regal Orb.

In the course of your adventure, certain currencies might fall at random from global monsters, or appear in the merchandise of vendors scattered along your path.
