Since its release, Pokemon Champions has received mixed reactions. It initially included a limited number of Pokemon and items and suffered from several glitches. Despite these problems, the game offers a fun battling experience, letting players easily create and test different teams, moves, and abilities. However, a frustrating aspect for new players is how difficult it can be to obtain certain Pokemon. Currently, Pokemon are primarily found through the battle pass or the Recruit system, meaning getting the ones you want largely depends on luck unless you’ve transferred them from Pokemon Home.
Let’s say you’re trying to add a Sinistcha to your team in Pokemon Champions, but you don’t have one saved in Pokemon Home and you haven’t played the Teal Mask DLC (or even the base version of) Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. While the game gives you one free chance each day to recruit a Pokemon, it’s chosen at random from a limited selection, so getting the specific Pokemon you want isn’t guaranteed. Even if you do get lucky, you’ll need to spend 2,500 VP or a Teammate Ticket to add them to your team permanently before you can customize them. This system essentially encourages you to play the newest Pokemon games to fully build the team you want.
How Pokemon Champions’ Recruit Pokemon Mechanic Works
Here are some ways to help you quickly decide which Pokémon to recruit first in Pokémon Champions:
- Free lineup of 10 new Pokemon to choose from every 22 hours
- Quick Coupons and/or VP to meet a new lineup of Pokemon by shortening the wait time of 22 hours (1 Quick Coupon equals one hour of wait time removed, and 100 VP equal one hour of wait time removed)
- Complete Achievements to obtain Affinity Tickets, which guarantee three Pokemon in the new lineup to have the corresponding type on the ticket. For example, if you use a Ghost Affinity Ticket, you have three guaranteed Ghost-type Pokemon
- You can use Affinity Tickets by clicking X on your Switch or Switch on the Recruit Pokemon screen before the new lineup of Pokemon appears, and it works both for free new lineups and those with Quick Coupons or VP
- Some Daily Missions, Weekly Missions, Starter Missions, and Membership Missions award more Quick Coupons and VP that you can use to meet new Pokemon or permanently recruit the ones you have
- Ranking up in Pokemon Champions awards one-time VP bonuses
- Playing single and double battles in Pokemon Champions awards VP based on how long the battle was, and awards more VP to the winner
Why Pokemon Champions is Not Enough to Build Good Teams
If you don’t connect to Pokemon Home, you’re limited in how you can build your team in the game. This makes playing Pokemon Scarlet and Violet especially important for competitive players, because those games have access to the largest variety of Pokemon from the Champions Pokedex.
Getting some Pokémon will require playing Pokémon Legends: Arceus or Pokémon Legends: Z-A. A prime example is Eternal Flower Floette: you can only obtain Mega Floette in Pokémon Champions, but to use it in battle, you need to transfer one from Pokémon Legends: Z-A to Pokémon Home and then bring it into Pokémon Champions.

You can currently get Machamp as a free gift in Pokemon Champions.
In addition to the 44 Pokémon mentioned, all 142 other Pokémon and their different forms are available in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. The majority of those 44 Pokémon are exclusive to the Z-A version of the game, likely because they feature new or returning Mega Evolutions, or are from the sixth generation of Pokémon.
If you want to obtain the Mega Stone evolutions for Chesnaught, Delphox, and Greninja – Chesnaughtite, Delphoxite, and Greninjite – in Pokemon Champions, you’ll need to transfer those Pokemon from Legends: Z-A. The same applies to Floettite, which requires transferring an Eternal Flower Floette. This means Pokemon Champions indirectly requires players to engage with more recent Pokemon games. While you can try to simply recruit these Pokemon within Champions, be aware that doing so will likely be very expensive in terms of VP and require significant editing to achieve permanent ownership.
