Fans of the popular web novel Dungeon Crawler Carl are excited to hear it’s becoming a tabletop game! The crowdfunding campaign for the game has already been incredibly successful, breaking records and showing just how much support there is for bringing this story to life as a physical game.
Turning popular book series into tabletop games is a growing trend, as game developers seek out worlds with built-in fan bases. Renegade Game Studios has been a leader in this area, successfully adapting well-known brands like Transformers and G.I. Joe into board games and roleplaying games. For their latest project, they collaborated with author Matt Dinniman to faithfully bring the story to life on the tabletop. The Dungeon Crawler Carl campaign generated unprecedented excitement, becoming the most-followed roleplaying project ever on BackerKit. This demonstrates the remarkable rise in popularity of the “LitRPG” genre, which has moved from a small online community to a major form of entertainment.
The Chaotic Mechanics of Dungeon Crawler Carl’s World Dungeon
World Dungeon is a game set in a harsh, alien world that operates like a reality TV show. The last humans on Earth are forced to compete in this dangerous arena to entertain a galactic audience. Players navigate a complex, televised labyrinth where their every action is scrutinized by viewers and sponsors. In the roleplaying game, one player acts as the ‘Dungeon AI,’ guiding and challenging the others. The core of the game revolves around gaining fans and attracting support to get valuable items and progress deeper into the dungeon. Players start with a tutorial that mirrors the beginning of the source material, focusing on basic survival before they can fully customize their characters. Ultimately, World Dungeon captures the feeling of being trapped in a high-pressure competition where being entertaining is just as important as winning.
If you’re looking for a roleplaying game with a rich story and lots of character customization, this one offers a detailed system for creating truly unique heroes. The main rulebook is a hefty 300 pages and focuses on adventures on the dungeon’s third through fifth floors. Players have a huge variety of choices, with over 30 races – including quirky options like “Former Child Actor” and “Skyfowl” – and tons of different character classes. The system is so flexible, you can even design your own skills and classes, just like the popular “System AI” from the original story. To enhance the experience, Renegade is releasing three sets of pre-painted miniatures featuring beloved characters and monsters, like Carl with his explosives and Princess Donut on her mount, Mongo. They’re also making themed dice sets, including sparkly purple resin dice called the “Sepsis Crown,” perfect for the game’s charismatic cat character.
For players without a full group, the campaign’s second part offers “Dungeon Crawler Carl: Unstoppable,” a game designed for one or two people. It’s a deck-building game with a special feature: you can actually improve your cards during gameplay by adding new abilities to your equipment. This innovative “card-crafting” system was created by John D. Clair and lets you prepare for tough battles against bosses. You can play in Arcade mode for quick challenges or a full Campaign mode where you progress through floors. A key part of the game is managing risk – the stronger you become, the more powerful the boss gets! Familiar artist Luciano Fleitas is back with the artwork, keeping the game’s look consistent with the series. This card game offers a quicker, more strategic way to enjoy the beginning of the dungeon crawl.
This crowdfunding campaign for two exciting projects has quickly become a huge success, raising over $6.7 million right after it began. People who support the project can choose from different levels of rewards, called “Loot Boxes,” depending on how much content they want. The basic Bronze tier costs around $55 and includes a starter set for the role-playing game, while the most expensive Celestial tier costs $490 and includes everything from both games. A key perk for supporters is the Season 1 Pass, which will deliver six digital updates with new bosses and areas between November 2026 and October 2027. The campaign will run on BackerKit until May 15th, and physical rewards are expected to ship to backers in October of that year. With this much early support, the project is on track to be one of the most successful tabletop game campaigns ever, potentially matching the size of the biggest gaming campaigns on these platforms.
