Key Takeaways
- Wapol’s greed is depicted in his ability to eat anything with his Devil Fruit power.
- Ace, Luffy‘s brother, shares a large appetite and love for meat.
- Jewelry Bonney’s tragic past led to her becoming known for her huge appetite.
In my humble opinion, each of these characters represents a unique blend of power, greed, and ambition that makes them truly captivating. Among them, I find myself particularly drawn to Charlotte Katakuri from the Big Mom Pirates. His life story resonates with me as it mirrors the struggles many of us have faced in our own lives – bullying, self-doubt, and the relentless pursuit of redemption.
Monkey D. Luffy has an enormous hunger for more than just food. His cravings encompass adventure and liberty, but his appetite for edibles stands out particularly vividly. Known as the Straw Hat, this voracious eater’s hunger isn’t confined to the meat he adores. On Whole Cake Island, Luffy was caught engaging in what is considered a criminal act called “snackalism,” where one allegedly damages property by snacking on it.
In the broader scope of the series, he is just one of numerous voracious individuals who have left an impression. Although various characters are depicted as eating, these individuals and their insatiable hunger stand out significantly, making it hard to ignore their appetite even when compared to Luffy.
7. Wapol
Ruler of the Evil Black Drum Kingdom
- Affiliation: Evil Black Drum Kingdom, Bliking Pirates
- Favorite Food(s): Baked Houses
Wapol, who once ruled Drum Kingdom, stands out due to his excessive greed. Instead of helping his people, he selfishly held onto the kingdom for himself. As a result, the populace despised him. When the Blackbeard Pirates appeared, he fled but was later compelled to return when danger abated. His insatiable desire for more is mirrored in his Devil Fruit, the Baku Baku no Mi, which lets him consume uncommon substances and change into whatever he’s eaten.
He is seen eating throughout his fight with Luffy, to the extent that he could transform and strengthen himself by doing so. He could also fuse sentient beings with objects he had eaten, provided he had eaten them as well. Despite this, he was eventually defeated and exiled once more. After spending some time rampaging and eating entire towns, Wapol was eventually arrested. Becoming homeless, Wapol ate tons of garbage, as well as a dog that peed on him, out of sheer desperation. The ultimate result of this binge was a bunch of strange toys which he sold to make a living. He used the momentum of this initial success to become a wealthy CEO and eventually was gifted another Kingdom for his efforts.
6. Portgas D. Ace
Second Division Commander of the Whitebeard Pirates
- Affiliation: Whitebeard Pirates, Spade Pirates (Formerly)
- Favorite Food(s): Spaghetti with Ghost Peppers and Bear Meat
Among Luffy’s two close, non-blood brothers, Ace was one of them. Their father, Gol D. Roger, had asked Monkey D. Garp to keep an eye on Ace, though from a distance. As a result, Ace and Luffy spent their childhood years together. Although they weren’t related by blood, it’s evident that they greatly influenced each other. When they were younger, they often shared meals, but it seems Ace is more particular about the meat he considers his “favorite.
In his escapades, Ace is depicted with an unusually big appetite, much like Luffy. Most notably, he gobbled up a massive feast at the Spice Bean, during his run-in with Smoker. Additionally, he wrecked the Buggy Pirates’ ship after detecting food on board, promptly helping himself to it. Although not as frequently demonstrated as Luffy’s, Ace does exhibit an appetite comparable to that of his sibling.
5. Jewelry Bonney
A Super-Hungry Supernova
- Affiliation: Bonney Pirates, Straw Hat Pirates
- Favorite Food(s): Pizza Margherita
The presumed daughter of a revolutionary leader, known as Ginny, is a young pirate with the nickname “Big Mom,” which suggests she has a hearty appetite. As the youngest and only female member of the notorious Worst Generation, her accomplishments belie a sorrowful past. Prior to being transformed into a Pacifista for protection purposes, she was raised by Bartholomew Kuma, who was once in a relationship with Ginny.
Ever since she started sailing the seas, Bonney’s insatiable appetite has become a well-known aspect of her character. For instance, she once ordered a substantial meal at a restaurant in Grove 24 and showed rather unrefined dining etiquette, which left Capone Bege, another prominent pirate, quite appalled. Recently, however, Bonney has formed friendships with the Straw Hat Pirates, particularly their leader, Luffy, who also happens to have a big appetite like her.
4. Marshall D. Teach
‘Admiral’ of the Blackbeard Pirates
- Affiliation: Blackbeard Pirates, Whitebeard Pirates (Formerly)
- Favorite Food(s): Kebab and Cherry Pie (especially from Jaya)
Marshall D. Teach, often referred to as Blackbeard, stands out as one of Luffy’s formidable adversaries. The suspected involvement in the deaths of Ace and Whitebeard has fueled Luffy’s intense hatred towards this pirate. After their last direct confrontation during the Summit War, both have climbed the ranks to the position of Emperor, making them two of the four pirate captains deemed most dangerous by the World Government.
In their initial encounter at Jaya, these two rivals subtly displayed their animosity while seated side by side in a bar. Although strangers, they both expressed distinct opinions about the cherry pie and soda they shared. Teach admired the pie, while Luffy found its taste unpalatable. Similarly, their preferences for the drinks differed greatly. Following this, they placed a takeout order, and their disagreement verged on turning into a physical altercation. This incident mirrors their comparable drive for ambition; although of similar magnitude, their methods to fulfill it vary significantly.
3. Charlotte Linlin
Captain of the Big Mom Pirates
- Affiliation: Big Mom Pirates, Rocks Pirates (Formerly)
- Favorite Food(s): Sweet Confectioneries
This ex-Empress was infamous for ruling through terror, mirroring her insatiable cravings in the manner she governed. Her destructive tendencies led her parents to leave her at Elbaf, hoping that Mother Carmel would care for her. During the Winter Solstice festival, Linlin’s hunger became a problem as residents had to fast for 12 days. On the 7th day, Linlin went on a rampage and killed one of the Giant Warrior Pirates Co-Captains, Jorul. After being transferred to another island, Carmel intended to sell Linlin to the World Government. However, it’s possible that Linlin consumed Carmel and the other orphans she cared for, waking up with Carmel’s Devil Fruit powers.
Ever since then, Linlin’s self-indulgent inclinations have taken over, causing her appetite to make her a much more aggressive and ill-tempered being when she hasn’t eaten. She frequently inflicts harm, even death, on those who dare oppose her. Only the joint efforts of Eustass Kid and Trafalgar D. Water Law managed to subdue her, but it remains uncertain whether she perished or not.
2. Charlotte Katakuri
Sweet Commander of the Big Mom Pirates
- Affiliation: Big Mom Pirates
- Favorite Food(s): Doughnuts
Among the Big Mom Pirates, apart from his mother, Katakuri appears to be the strongest. Interestingly, he was capable of matching Monkey D. Luffy in battle, and they both emerged from their fight with admiration for each other. Beyond their fighting abilities, there’s another similarity: Katakuri has a strong appetite, making him something of a food enthusiast.
Through the formation of a habit to consume his meals swiftly, Katakuri acquired a mouth resembling that of a pelican-eel, which made others recoil from him. He was often tormented, yet possessed the strength to retaliate against his tormentors. Regrettably, some of his tormentors later assaulted his half-sister, Brûlée, as an act of revenge, leaving a mark on her face that remains visible today. Ridden with guilt over this attack, Katakuri donned a scarf to hide his own face and resolved to transform into a relentless pirate. To maintain his reputation, he eats only when reclined, a practice he keeps hidden to foster the legend that he never lies on his back.
Nevertheless, Luffy reveals the true appearance of his face, which prompts his younger half-sister Flampe to tease him. Despite losing to Luffy, Katakuri remains highly respected within the crew due to his position as one of its Three Sweet Commanders. Many of his siblings view him as a likely candidate to take over as captain in their mother’s absence.
1. York
Vegapunk’s Greed
- Affiliation: The Five Elders, Dr. Vegapunk (Formerly)
- Favorite Food(s): Hamburgers
Dr. Vegapunk skillfully divided himself into six entities called satellites, each representing a distinct trait of the brilliant scientist. These satellites shared access to his wisdom and memories. Notably, York embodied Vegapunk’s characteristic of “greed,” proving useful by managing responsibilities like eating, rest, and bodily functions, allowing the other satellites to focus solely on their tasks without interruption.
Despite her inherently selfish character, she secretly undermined her fellow satellites and creators. Unlike Lilith and Vegapunk’s dark side, York was drawn to the World Nobles. After the Egghead Incident, York managed to join their ranks, serving under Figarland Garling, one of the Five Elders. As the Warrior God of Science and Defense, a figure with Vegapunk-like intellect, York proved to be an ideal subordinate for him. Ever since her change in allegiance was uncovered, her fellow satellites destroyed her spare parts, preventing her from being resurrected if she were to die.
