As a seasoned Mass Effect veteran with countless hours invested in saving the galaxy and countless more spent theorizing about its future, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension regarding Mass Effect 4. The teased return of Liara T’Soni and the shift towards a sleeker design are intriguing, to say the least. However, the prospect of addressing the current statuses of beloved characters from the previous titles is a double-edged sword that could potentially weigh down the game.
Due to limited information about the development of Mass Effect 4, we have only a few clues about this highly anticipated return to BioWare’s classic RPG series. The only confirmations come from teasers, which reveal that Liara T’Soni will return and the design is more streamlined. However, since it follows the timeline of previous games, there’s a potential issue to consider – avoiding the burden of dealing with characters’ current situations, as this could potentially make Mass Effect 4 feel heavy for fans who are eagerly awaiting its release.
In a recent update on platform X, BioWare’s Michael Gamble hinted at the Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC for Mass Effect 2 following the much-anticipated launch of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. He suggested fans revisit this expansion, as the role of Liara in it could suggest a fresh direction for Mass Effect 4. However, given her potential return, she might prove to be one of the few characters making a comeback. Despite the mixed reviews for Mass Effect: Andromeda, the decision to introduce an entirely new cast could hold even more significance as we move forward.
Mass Effect 4’s Potential Ties to the Shadow Broker Could Complicate Relationships with Many Previous Companions
Some Characters May Be More Compelling as NPCs
In the sneak peek for N7 Day 2023 of Mass Effect, the character design appears significantly less battle-ready compared to Commander Shepard’s iconic look, sparking theories that the upcoming game might delve into a spy-oriented storyline. Such a change could potentially phase out militaristic allies like Garrus or Ashley, as their roles might be diminished in favor of covert missions with a subtler focus.
Shifting Allegiances Shouldn’t Be Discounted
In Mass Effect 4, Liara’s role as the Shadow Broker suggests she might delve into underworld information networks, hinting at a questionable moral compass for the new team. Given her future in ME3, the climactic war may have driven her further into criminal activities within the space underworld. If Mass Effect 4 revisits an organization like Cerberus, it’s unlikely that the ethically sound members of past teams will be friendly acquaintances.
Moving On From Returning Trilogy Companions Would Give Mass Effect 4 the Room to Establish Its Own Identity
Honoring ME3’s Consequences is the Elephant in the Room
Immersive levels of decision-making carrying over between games was a core tenant of the Shepard titles, and this left many of its characters with wildly different outcomes based on the player’s actions. Wrex could have led the Krogan race into a new glory age or died years prior by the ending of Mass Effect 3, and Mordin could have chosen to survive over curing the Genophage. Canonizing some of these routes and alienating certain players is inevitable in a sequel, but avoiding this as much as possible would be more in line with a legacy of player-driven storytelling. Instead of repeating companions for the sake of fan service, leaving them alone in favor of unseen parts of the galaxy seems to better respect the variation in Shepard’s journey across playthroughs.
Instead of focusing predominantly on the well-established species in the Mass Effect universe, it could be more intriguing to explore the less developed ones. Since unusual elements like the Volus, Elcor, and Vorcha have traditionally been relegated to secondary roles outside of multiplayer modes, persisting with the same alien races might risk a sense of repetition or monotony.
