Even though many players have already spent a lot of time with Nioh 3, this update will give experienced players new challenges and rewards. The game has already been a big success since its release, and this patch will add even more difficult quests to test even the best players.
Released in February 2026 on PlayStation 5 and PC, Nioh 3 quickly became a popular and challenging action-RPG. Developed by Team Ninja, the game is the newest addition to the Nioh series, which has sold over 8 million copies worldwide. Nioh 3 broke series sales records, reaching 1 million units sold faster than any previous title. The series is famous for its complex combat and rewarding loot, often compared to the ‘Souls-like’ genre, but with its own unique style. Expanding the Nioh 3’s Sengoku Legend
The April 27 update will significantly expand the game with the addition of challenging new side missions called “Battle Scrolls.” These scrolls let players replay iconic battles with much harder combat. A new “Stone of Penance” system is also being introduced, letting players increase the difficulty for a chance to win even better gear and accessories. This is aimed at players who found the game too easy and want to truly test their skills. Completing these difficult Battle Scrolls unlocks new abilities, giving players a strong reason to push themselves. Beyond new content, the update includes important balance changes, specifically to enhance certain character bonuses called “Graces.” These changes will offer more options for powerful endgame builds, and full details will be available in the official patch notes.
The producer of Nioh 3, Kohei Shibata, shared a message on the game’s website thanking players worldwide for their support. He confirmed the team is actively developing new updates and downloadable content, starting with a patch released on April 27th. This is just the first step in a plan for content throughout 2026 and 2027. Players who purchase the Season Pass will receive two large expansions: Hell Rising, planned for September 2026, and Hell Insurrection (also potentially called Bloody Insurrection) in February 2027. These expansions will add new storylines, enemies, bosses, and yokai to the game.
Nioh 3 plunges players into Japan’s turbulent Sengoku period, following the story of Tokugawa Takechiyo. As the grandson of the famed Tokugawa Ieyasu, Takechiyo is meant to become a leader, but a dangerous plot within his own family threatens his destiny. His brother, Tokugawa Kunimatsu, attempts to take control by unleashing powerful, supernatural creatures across the land. With the help of the spirit Kusanagi, players guide Takechiyo through a war-torn world to claim his birthright as Shogun. The game features many famous historical figures like Takeda Shingen, Minamoto no Yoshitsune, and Hattori Hanzo, and also introduces new characters, including Queen Himiko, portrayed by Tao Tsuchiya.
