In chapter 1180 of One Piece, Nerona Imu, known as the King of the World, demonstrated a portion of his immense power, easily overpowering strong fighters like Gerd, Roronoa Zoro, Stansen, Hajrudin, and Sanji. This chapter revealed Imu’s strength to be on a completely different level, and introduced a new ability called Maki. Maki appears to be similar to Haki, but potentially even more powerful, based on what was shown in the latest chapter.
Breaking Down The Connection Between Omen and Haki
As a huge One Piece fan, I’ve been thinking about how Viz Media translated Maki, and it’s interesting! They went with ‘Omen,’ which makes sense if you just look at the words, but it doesn’t quite capture what Maki is in the story. See, ‘Maki’ is the actual Japanese word for this power, and it’s super important because it’s directly linked to Haki. Haki is all about ‘spiritual domination,’ but Maki is more like ‘demonic energy’ – a kind of dark counterpart to Haki. Both words actually share ‘Ki,’ which just means spiritual energy, but that’s where the similarity ends. Haki has a positive vibe, while Maki, with its ‘demonic’ roots, feels like the opposite – a really cool, darker version of the same thing!
The preview for One Piece chapter 1180 revealed that Imu possesses a powerful, almost otherworldly spiritual energy. This energy seems to surpass even the strongest forms of Haki, like Supreme King Haki. While Imu clearly uses Haki – as seen with the Conqueror’s Haki coating his leg when he hit Sanji – he also has a separate, much more potent power that goes beyond anything previously seen.
Scaling Imu’s Demonic ‘Maki’ To Haki
The relationship between Maki and Haki is quite interesting, and it’s natural to wonder how they stack up against each other. Haki generally comes in two forms: Armament Haki and Observation Haki. A rare third type, Conqueror’s Haki, exists as well, significantly increasing both attack and defense. According to chapter 1180 of One Piece, Maki appears to be much stronger than Haki. When Imu first used Maki on Zoro, he was already utilizing both Armament Haki and Conqueror’s Haki at full power. Even so, just one hit from Maki was enough to severely injure and almost knock him unconscious.
Imu used this power on Hajrudin, creating a large explosion that instantly knocked him unconscious – a surprising sight. The World Sovereign also employed this ability on Sanji, and even Sanji’s strong Haki wasn’t enough to withstand Imu’s immense power. Imu’s unique ability overwhelmed Sanji, causing a massive explosion and likely serious injuries. It’s now evident that this power surpasses the spiritual energy of Haki, which has been established in the story for quite some time.

Why The King of the World’s Akuma no Mi Grants The Power Of Black Flames
It’s pretty straightforward why Imu can wield the power associated with Maki. Imu possesses a Devil Fruit that allows him to transform into the embodiment of the world’s ‘Devil’. Considering ‘Maki’ translates to ‘demonic aura’, it’s highly probable that this fruit is the source of the World King’s abilities, making it an incredibly powerful and dangerous fruit within the One Piece universe.
“What in the world is happening? I’ve never encountered Haki this powerful, even at God Valley!” – Gaban, Chapter 1180
Beyond simply making his fighters stronger offensively and defensively, Imu’s ‘Maki’ ability seems to have other effects. I’ve observed that Imu can bestow a sort of ‘good luck’ charm – a positive Omen – onto his followers, and it dramatically improves their abilities. We saw this with Sommers, who actually started flying after receiving more power from Imu. It’s clear now that Sommers is likely far more powerful than almost anyone else in the world of One Piece.
Other Potential Users Of The Latest Demonic Power in the Final Saga
Imu is incredibly skilled with Maki, but it’s probable others could learn this power too. Considering it’s linked to black flames and demonic energy, Sanji from the Straw Hat Pirates is a likely candidate. Sanji already controls and changes the color of flames, and they grow stronger with heat. While he currently uses blue Ifrit Jambe flames, it’s possible his flames could eventually become black if he reaches even higher temperatures.
Sanji has a clear link to a powerful demon. His fighting techniques, Diable Jambe (meaning “The Devil’s Leg”) and Ifrit Jambe (“Demon God Leg”), both reference demonic entities. This suggests his powers will continue to evolve with a demonic focus. Considering this, along with the connection between Sanji’s abilities, Imu’s powers, and the presence of black flames, it’s likely Sanji will eventually gain the power of Maki.
Currently, only Imu possesses this unique ability, but it’s likely others will develop it too, potentially becoming a crucial advantage in the fight against the World Government. It seems anyone Imu grants this power to can use it – we saw this with Sommers and Killingam, who both received demonic aura in the last chapter. Sommers instantly gained immense power and the ability to fly after being revived, so it’s reasonable to expect he’ll combine this new power with his existing vine abilities.
These vines, engulfed in dark flames, have the potential to unlock Sommers’ and Killingam’s full power, making them incredibly formidable opponents. Sommers was already strong, but now poses a serious threat to Zoro in battle. Killingam, too, was dangerous, but with Maki’s help, his fighting skills will reach a new level. This clever development by Oda expands the presence of this new demonic ability within the world of One Piece, creating more powerful characters.
