One Piece: 6 Strongest Characters Before The Void Century

The Void Century was a crucial period in the world of One Piece, happening between 900 and 800 years ago. It represents the time of a huge global war that ultimately led to the formation of the World Government and the downfall of the Ancient Kingdom, which was ruled by Joy Boy.

The Void Century is a huge mystery in One Piece, but the story also hints at a world that existed even earlier. The Elbaf Arc is starting to reveal this “First World” and introduces incredibly powerful characters who lived before the events of the Void Century. Eiichiro Oda has already shown us several strong fighters from One Piece‘s past, demonstrating that significant power existed long before this lost period of history.

Ratatoskr

  • Time Period: First World

Ratatoskr is a legendary ice squirrel from the myths of Elbaf. Said to have lived thousands of years ago, it was a companion to Elbaf’s unknown Warrior God. According to legend, Ratatoskr once battled the Sun God Nika and gained immense power. It can create snow, manipulate the land, and freeze almost anything. Uniquely, only Ratatoskr itself can unfreeze what it has frozen.

Legends say the Galleila, a powerful group of warrior giants from Elbaf who fought with hammers, willingly allowed themselves to be frozen by the creature Ratatoskr. They’re believed to still be frozen somewhere, possibly in Punk Hazard. After the original owner died, Ratatoskr’s spirit lived on inside its hammer, Ragnir, and now guides Loki, whom it selected as its new wielder after many years.

Zunesha

  • Time Period: 1000 Years Ago to Today

Zunesha is a gigantic elephant that travels the seas in the world of One Piece. It was a friend of Joy Boy, but is much older, having lived for around a thousand years – even before the start of the Void Century. While its full history remains a mystery, Zunesha apparently committed a serious offense in the distant past and was cursed to wander the oceans forever as punishment.

Zunesha, a massive elephant, has been journeying across the ocean for a long time, patiently awaiting the return of Joy Boy. An entire community lives on its back, in a country called Zou, and these people, known as the Mink Tribe, share a deep history with both the Kozuki family and the ancient kingdom. As the story of One Piece moves closer to its climax and the final battle, we’ll learn more about Zunesha’s connection to Joy Boy.

Serpent Of Hellfire

  • Time Period: The First World

The Serpent of Hellfire is a significant character in One Piece who apparently lived long before the Void Century. While much about this being remains a mystery, it’s been established that it existed in One Piece’s First World – a world that likely vanished over a thousand, and potentially even three thousand, years ago.

Long ago, the Serpent of Hellfire and the Earth God fought against Nika in a battle so massive it destroyed the world. Centuries later, the world was reborn. The Serpent of Hellfire’s true appearance remains a mystery, but legends describe it as a colossal snake, taller than any building, with the power to breathe fire.

Warrior God of Elbaph

  • Time Period: First World

Over the years, the island of Elbaf has witnessed the growth and decline of many powerful beings, but perhaps the most formidable was a figure known only as the War God. First alluded to in the Little Garden arc of One Piece, the Elbaf arc offered further details about this legendary warrior. Stories claim he lived long ago and fought with an enormous hammer.

The War God was incredibly powerful, even capable of battling the Sun God Nika. He was often accompanied by Ratatoskr, an ice squirrel, making them a dangerous team in battle. The War God could also transform into a massive black dragon named Nidhoggr. Legends say he was an Ancient Giant, far larger and stronger than any other Giant. It’s possible the author, Oda, will reveal more about the history of the War God and Sun God Nika, potentially detailing events before the Void Century.

Nika

  • Time Period: First World

Nika is a figure from legend, said to have existed for millennia. He’s essentially a champion of freedom, known for liberating the enslaved and bringing joy to those who suffer. Nika appears only when injustice and oppression become overwhelming, and his arrival often signals the end of a corrupt system. Because of this, some call him a destroyer, while others see him as a liberator.

Legend speaks of a first Sun God named Nika who lived long ago. During a lost period of history called the Void Century, another figure known as Joy Boy became the second Sun God Nika after consuming the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika Devil Fruit. Today, Luffy has eaten the same fruit and gained the power of the Sun God Nika, making him incredibly strong – though the original Nika was likely even more powerful.

Earth God

  • Time Period: The First World

The Earth God is an ancient figure from the world of One Piece who still holds power today. Though often linked to the Void Century, it’s been revealed the Earth God actually existed during the First World. At that time, this figure ruled the Earth, creating a period of widespread chaos, slavery, and oppression, all driven by a desire for the Mother Flame and greater power.

Long ago, the Earth God and the Serpent of Hellfire joined forces, causing a cataclysmic battle that wiped out the entire world. Remarkably, the Earth God didn’t truly disappear, continuing to exist in a new world, known as the Second World. Today, in the current One Piece world – the Third World where Luffy adventures – the Earth God still lives on, and is likely the mysterious figure known as Imu.
