After the huge popularity of the live-action One Piece series, Netflix is adapting another popular franchise: Mobile Suit Gundam. We now have more details about the upcoming live-action Gundam movie, which will feature the iconic giant robot battles.
The project first surfaced in 2018, but Netflix didn’t officially join until 2021. After years of quiet development and speculation, it seems the production faced several challenges before finding a director in Jim Mickle, known for his work on Sweet Tooth, and moving forward. While a release date hasn’t been announced, the Gundam movie is currently being filmed in Queensland, Australia.
Sydney Sweeney Stars in New Gundam Live-Action
Netflix is making a live-action movie based on Mobile Suit Gundam, and has announced the main actors: Sydney Sweeney, known from Euphoria, and Noah Centineo, who starred in Street Fighter. The movie will tell a new story during a ten-year-long war in space, and will likely carry on Gundam’s history of promoting an anti-war message. Legendary Pictures is producing the film.
The new movie will bring back the idea of space colonies, a key part of the original Gundam anime. The story focuses on a war between Earth and these former colonies, with skilled mecha pilots fighting on both sides. This will be the third Gundam series to feature a female protagonist, following Gundam: The Witch from Mercury and Gundam GQuuuuuux.
Sweeney and Centineo are expected to be the story’s central opponents. While the movie might include nods to Gundam 0079, it will probably take place in a completely new setting. However, we might still see a group called the Earth Federation appear. Starting fresh with the timeline is the smartest move for the filmmakers, giving them creative freedom and making it easier to create future sequels or prequels without being tied down by existing stories. It’s still unclear whether both warring sides will use Gundams, or if, like the original anime, only one side will have access to them.
Although the character names haven’t been released yet, the cast list is growing, with several actors joining Sweeney and Centineo.

- Shioli Kutsuna (Deadpool & Wolverine);
- Nonso Anozie (Sweet Tooth);
- Michael Mando (Better Call Saul);
- Javon “Wanna” Walton (Under the Bridge);

Bringing Gundam to “Real Life” for the Second Time
Although it might come as a surprise, this isn’t the first Japanese-American live-action movie in the Gundam series. Back in 1999, a film called G-Saviour, produced by PoleStar Entertainment with oversight from Sunrise, was released. It takes place in the Universal Century timeline, long after the events of Gundam 0079. While G-Saviour received a modest response, this new production is much more ambitious – and represents one of several recent bold steps the franchise has taken.
The original Mobile Suit Gundam is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
