As a seasoned veteran of the Path of Exile universe, I can confidently say that the upcoming sequel, Path of Exile 2, is shaping up to be a thrilling journey for both newcomers and veterans alike. The introduction of multiple damage types beyond physical damage, each with their unique status ailments, adds an exciting layer of strategy to combat encounters.

In Path of Exile 2, both players and opponents can utilize various forms of damage, not just physical. Moreover, these magical damage types may inflict a detrimental condition on the target, providing an advantage during combat.

Status Ailments are conditions that cannot be cured; instead, you must either steer clear of them or endure their impact while they last. Here is a list of each ailment along with its effects, which apply equally to both players and opponents:

Ailments don’t take away from the damage being done by an attack, and instead add an after-effect on the target. These ailments only have a chance of occurring, with many of them being built up with many hits in a row from a specific damage type, much like Stun. In total there are seven ailments:

Ailment NameEffects
ChillTargets move slowly for two seconds, this includes movement speed, swing speed, and skill casting speed. Chill can be stacked to slow the target up to half their usual speed.
FreezeTargets frozen will be completely unable to act for four seconds.
ShockTargets shocked will take more damage than usual for four seconds.
ElectrocuteTargets are unable to act or perform skills of any kind for five seconds.
IgniteTargets ignited will catch on fire and receive damage over time fire damage for four seconds.
PoisonDeals damage straight to the target’s health, ignoring armor and shield for two seconds.
BleedDeals damage straight to the target’s health, ignoring armor and shield for five seconds.

To steer clear of afflictions, it is advisable to stay away from the specific kind of damage they are associated with. Apart from physical harm, there are four additional categories of damage that can lead to ailments. Here’s a rundown of what each type can potentially trigger:

  • Fire – Ignite
  • Frost – Chill & Freeze
  • Lightning – Electrocute & Shock
  • Chaos – Bleed & Poison

Even though not every assault causing that kind of harm might lead to one of the associated afflictions, reducing your overall resistance to such damage can lessen your likelihood of contracting those ailments. You can significantly boost your resistance with passive abilities, but it’s important to note that you can never fully resist any type of damage, regardless of your character build.
