Powers related to shadows are actually quite common in anime. Lots of well-known characters can control shadows with impressive skill. While anime often features abilities based on the traditional elements, shadow and light powers stand out. These powers range from direct control over shadows, like Fumikage Tokoyami’s ability in My Hero Academia, to more unique applications, such as Sung Jinwoo’s shadow army in Solo Leveling.
Gecko Moria
- Anime: One Piece
Gecko Moria is a character from the anime and manga series One Piece, formerly one of the powerful Seven Warlords of the Sea. While not the most well-known villain, he played a key role in the Thriller Bark story arc. Given that Thriller Bark is a horror-themed island, it makes sense that its main antagonist, Moria, has powers related to shadows. He possesses the Shadow-Shadow Fruit, which allows him to control and manipulate shadows.
The Shadow-Shadow Fruit is a powerful ability that lets Moria steal and manipulate shadows. He can use these stolen shadows to become stronger, or even attach them to dead bodies, bringing them back as zombies. This fruit is incredibly strong, and despite Moria not being around much lately, he’s likely to be important again later in the story, living up to his title as the Ruler of Shadows.
Nacht Faust
- Anime: Black Clover
Nacht Faust is an important supporting character in the Black Clover series, serving as the vice-captain of the Black Bulls. While he initially appears mysterious, Nacht is a strong ally to the main characters. He’s best known as the most powerful user of Shadow Magic in the series. Nacht uses his grimoire to control shadows, allowing him to hide, teleport, and even restrain opponents. His magic works well with both Dark and Light Magic.

Shikamaru Nara
- Anime: Naruto
Shikamaru is a member of Team 10 in the Naruto series. While he might not be the most powerful ninja, he’s still a capable fighter thanks to his shadow techniques, which are a special ability passed down through his Nara Clan.
Shikamaru is famous for his Shadow Imitation Technique, which lets him control opponents by touching their shadows. He can either freeze them in place or make them copy his movements. Throughout the Naruto and Boruto series, he’s become a highly skilled ninja, even serving as Hokage temporarily until Naruto Uzumaki can officially pass on the role. Although he isn’t the strongest shadow user, his incredible intelligence allows him to maximize the technique’s effectiveness.
Fumikage Tokoyami
- Anime: My Hero Academia
Fumikage Tokoyami is a student in Class 1-A at U.A. High in the anime and manga series My Hero Academia. Although he isn’t one of the main characters like Midoriya or Bakugo, he’s had some important moments to showcase his abilities. Tokoyami’s power, called Dark Shadow, allows him to control shadows.
This Quirk allows him to summon a powerful shadow creature that fights for him, both attacking and defending. The creature’s strength and how well he can control it depend on how dark it is – the darker the environment, the more powerful, but also more difficult to manage, Dark Shadow becomes. He’s established himself as one of the strongest students in Class 1-A, which is saying a lot considering the incredible abilities of classmates like Deku, Bakugo, and Todoroki.
Pride
- Anime: Fullmetal Alchemist
Fullmetal Alchemist is widely considered one of the best anime series ever made. A key part of its success lies in its villains, known as the Homunculi. Among them, Pride is particularly strong and unforgettable. The fact that he originally appeared as a child named Selim Bradley made the truth about his identity even more surprising.
Pride is a powerful anime character known for his mastery of shadows. His shadow form is incredibly dangerous, able to quickly overwhelm opponents and posing a significant threat due to its massive size. This combination of power and adaptability makes Pride one of the most impressive shadow users in anime.
Yuka Okkotsu
- Anime: Jujutsu Kaisen
Yuka Okkotsu is a new character in the Jujutsu Kaisen series, playing a central role in the sequel, Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo. As the granddaughter of Yuta Okkotsu and Maki Zenin, she’s inherited a powerful ability from her grandmother’s side of the family: the Ten Shadow Technique, which was previously used by Megumi Fushiguro.
The Ten Shadows technique is a power centered around manipulating shadows, giving the user a degree of control over them. We’ve seen this in action, like when Yuka used shadows to hide from Mahoraga. Beyond concealment, the technique enables the summoning of strong Shikigami and the execution of attacks that mimic animal movements.
Megumi Fushiguro
- Anime: Jujutsu Kaisen
I’m a huge fan of Megumi Fushiguro from Jujutsu Kaisen – he’s definitely one of the most popular characters, and for good reason! What really gets me is his Cursed Technique, the Ten Shadows technique. It’s an amazing ability passed down through the Zenin Clan, letting him manipulate shadows in really cool and powerful ways.
Megumi has the ability to summon creatures called Shikigamis and can also use shadows to conceal himself. His most powerful technique, the Ten Shadows Technique, allows him to summon Mahoraga, a tremendously strong entity. Mahoraga is incredibly difficult to defeat, as he can adapt to anything, and only the most skilled sorcerers in the series have a chance. Megumi also possesses a domain expansion called Chimera Shadow Garden.
Sung Jinwoo
- Anime: Solo Leveling
The anime series Solo Leveling is quickly becoming a fan favorite, known for its incredible action sequences. Premiering in 2024, it’s received widespread acclaim, largely thanks to its compelling protagonist, Sung Jinwoo. Throughout the series, Jinwoo grows stronger, and a major turning point comes after his victory over Igris, when he unlocks a new level of power and becomes the Shadow Monarch through a unique System.
Becoming the Shadow Monarch granted Jinwoo special shadow powers. He can now transform defeated enemies into shadow soldiers, effectively creating his own army. These soldiers fight alongside him and also grant him abilities like teleportation and scouting. Jinwoo is widely considered the most recognizable and powerful shadow user in anime.
