Released in 2015, Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ brought back Frieza, a villain who first appeared in the Dragon Ball manga back in 1989. After being sent to Hell, Frieza spends four months training to finally defeat Goku. While some viewers wondered how he gained so much power so quickly, many were more curious about why his iconic battle jacket was restored along with his body.
I recently came across something really interesting – an old movie pamphlet from the Japanese release of Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F. Apparently, it answers a question fans have had for years! The director, Tadayoshi Yamamuro, actually explained how Frieza’s body works with his armor way back then. A fan on Twitter, @Com_battler_KK, just shared a passage from it and asked everyone to help get the information out to international fans, and it’s fascinating to finally have this explanation.
Frieza’s Battle Jacket is Actually His Skin
Interestingly, Frieza’s battle jacket isn’t actually armor – it’s actually a part of his skin! This was confirmed by animator Tadayoshi Yamamuro in a translated pamphlet for the Resurrection ‘F’ movie.
Frieza’s seemingly protective armor is actually a natural part of his body. It’s just how he looks in his base form, something only Akira Toriyama knew originally! I always assumed being without it meant he was naked, but it just dawned on me that’s not the case. I even drew him without those shoulder pieces when he was regenerating, and had to correct it later.
In Dragon Ball Z, when Frieza rips off his battle jacket, he’s actually shedding a part of his body to transform into his more powerful second form. This idea is supported by Dragon Ball Super: Broly, which shows a young Frieza without the armored appearance he’s known for. He hasn’t yet developed the purple gems on his body, suggesting they grew over time as he aged.
The fact that King Cold’s appearance is so similar to the armor worn by others suggests he isn’t in his second form, but his original one. This also strongly hints that the battle jackets used by the Saiyans and Frieza’s soldiers are designed to look like King Cold’s natural outer shell.

The Dragon Ball Super Anime Remake is Enhancing Resurrection F This Fall
Fans are talking again about Frieza’s return in armored form, sparked by the announcement of a Dragon Ball Super remake. This remake will improve the Resurrection ‘F’ arc after Dragon Ball Super: Beerus concludes. With the new Dragon Ball Super: Frieza anime planned for Fall 2026, it’s likely Dragon Ball Super: Beerus will be quite short—currently estimated at around six episodes, according to Dragon Ball experts like Geekdom101.
A preview for Dragon Ball Super: Frieza revealed Frieza in his first form, still wearing his Battle Jacket from Resurrection F and inside a rejuvenation tube. Fans initially believed this was an error over ten years ago, but it’s now clear Akira Toriyama intentionally included this detail as part of the Dragon Ball Z story. The upcoming Dragon Ball Super remake will not only update the animation and storytelling of the original series, but also more closely follow Toriyama’s original plans and notes, ultimately leading into the premiere of Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol, expected in either 2025 or 2028.
