As a long-time fan of the Path of Exile series, I must say that Path of Exile 2 has truly outdone itself with its innovative charm system. Coming from someone who’s spent countless hours fine-tuning character builds in the original game, the charm system offers a fresh yet familiar experience that caters to both veterans and newcomers alike.
In a fresh take on the action RPG genre, Path of Exile 2 seamlessly blends its renowned character customization options, along with an array of novel systems and character ascendancy classes. This fusion provides long-time Path of Exile enthusiasts with a refined, exhilarating combat experience that’s grounded in familiarity, while also extending a friendlier and more user-friendly starting journey to newcomers.
Among the novel features in Path of Exile 2, there is the introduction of the charm system. If you’re a veteran from the original Path of Exile, you might notice some resemblance to that game’s Utility Flask system. Charms provide players with instant access to potent utility effects, which activate on their own. Delve deeper into understanding charms and how they operate in the information provided below.
What are Charms?
Items called charms serve as additional equipment for players, positioned alongside health and mana potions. These charms offer various effects that trigger automatically under specific circumstances. For instance, a Ruby Charm increases a player’s resistance to fire when they receive fire damage, whereas a Dousing Charm protects players from the ignite ailment if they are set on fire. Charms are particularly useful for addressing a character’s defensive vulnerabilities, especially during early stages of the game where strong armor might not be readily available.
Charms operate much like flasks do in terms of a charge system, restricting their usage during combat. They have a maximum of 80 charges, with each activation depleting some of these charges. To replenish the charges, monsters must be slain. This means that charms may not always be accessible when they’re most needed, necessitating players to keep track of their charm usage and adopt a more defensive playstyle while their charges run low. To lessen this inconvenience, charms can also be crafted, transforming them into magical or rare items that offer benefits such as increased charge gain, reduced charge consumption, and more.
The number of charms you can carry at once depends on the belt you’re wearing. This is shown by the “Charm Slots” attribute of your belt. Initially, at lower levels, you’ll only be able to wear one charm. As your level increases, your belt will provide more slots for additional charms.
