You might not know this, but Crunchyroll also has anime movies!
Crunchyroll is the world’s leading anime streaming platform. While it’s best known for its TV series, especially new episodes released each season, it also offers a fantastic selection of anime movies that are well worth checking out, even though they aren’t always prominently featured. You’ll find hundreds of episodes available each season if you follow the currently airing shows, providing plenty of content to enjoy.
Crunchyroll boasts an impressive collection of anime movies, from recent big-screen releases to critically acclaimed films and enjoyable, visually stunning adventures. You’ll also find movies that continue the stories of popular TV series. Knowing how difficult it can be to find a good list of the best, I’ve compiled my personal recommendations – many of which are highly rated.

Coming Soon: Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc
Officially Streaming in Spring 2026
Following a successful theatrical release in 2025, Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc is getting ready to stream. Crunchyroll has announced it will be available soon, with an expected release sometime in Spring 2026 (between April and June). This movie continues the story directly after season one, introducing a new character who enters Denji’s life. Like the original episodes, it combines action, drama, and humor, and many believe it’s even better paced and more balanced than the first season.
It’s best to watch the Reze Arc after finishing season 1. It’s meant to follow directly from the main story and isn’t meant to be enjoyed on its own, plus it introduces important elements for what happens next.
A Silent Voice
A Powerful Tale About Bullying And Redemption
| Japanese Title | Koe no Katachi |
|---|---|
| Genre | Drama |
| Studio | Kyoto Animation |
Crunchyroll added the critically acclaimed film A Silent Voice on March 19, 2026, and it quickly became one of the platform’s best movies. If you’re prepared for an emotional rollercoaster – with both sadness and moments of frustration – Naoko Yamada’s film is a must-watch. While we won’t give away any key plot points, A Silent Voice sensitively explores the effects of bullying on everyone involved – those who are bullied, and those who do the bullying. It also realistically portrays how individuals respond when faced with the consequences of their actions, including situations involving group bullying.
The description above might make A Silent Voice sound more depressing than it is. While the anime deals with serious and realistic themes – especially concerning redemption – it ultimately has a hopeful feeling, particularly in the second half. Beyond the strong writing and well-developed characters, the animation is also excellent, as you’d expect from a studio like Kyoto Animation.
Suzume
Makoto Shinkai’s Latest Movie Is On Crunchyroll
| Japanese Title | Suzume no Tojimari |
|---|---|
| Genre | Drama, Fantasy |
| Studio | CoMix Wave Films |
I’ve been a huge fan of Makoto Shinkai for years, and it’s amazing to see how popular he’s become – a lot of people now consider him the biggest name working in anime today! He really broke through with Your Name, which is just a stunningly beautiful movie and easily one of the best of the last ten years. It’s a shame it’s not on Crunchyroll, but the good news is they do have his latest film, Suzume. And trust me, it’s another visual masterpiece! Like Your Name and Weathering with You, the animation is incredible – honestly, few films even come close to the level of detail and beauty Shinkai achieves.
The movie Suzume often sparks a lot of different opinions, largely because it explores themes similar to those in director Shinkai’s other films. It focuses on the contrast between the modern world and nature, and centers on a girl and a boy who, despite their connection, feel distant from each other. It’s best to watch this movie without knowing too much beforehand, as it has some unexpected twists that are best discovered as you watch.
Akira
The Most Important And Famous Anime Movie Ever
| Japanese Title | Akira |
|---|---|
| Genre | Action, Sci-Fi |
| Studio | Tokyo Movie Shinsha |
Widely considered a landmark film, Akira was one of the first anime movies to become popular around the world. It served as many people’s introduction to Japanese animation, and it was a stunning one. Over three decades later, the movie remains visually impressive and continues to spark conversation with its powerful themes.
The film Akira takes place in Neo-Tokyo, a futuristic city built on the ruins of old Tokyo. It depicts a dangerous world filled with violence, gangs, and secret experiments on people. The story begins when one of Shoutarou’s friends starts developing powerful psychic abilities and is taken by the government.
Fate/stay night [Heaven’s Feel]
The Best Fate Anime Is A Movie Trilogy
| Japanese Title | Fate/stay night Movie: Heaven’s Feel |
|---|---|
| Genre | Action, Supernatural |
| Studio | ufotable |
Fans of the Fate series can now stream Fate/stay night [Heaven’s Feel] on Crunchyroll. This trilogy offers a particularly dark and intense story arc, and is a great option for those who enjoyed Fate/Zero or Fate/stay night Unlimited Blade Works. Originally a visual novel with multiple paths, Heaven’s Feel was often overlooked in previous adaptations, including the 2006 anime. This version delivers about six hours of thrilling action, disturbing visuals, and complex relationships. While prior knowledge of the Fate universe isn’t strictly necessary, it helps to understand the basics of a Holy Grail War and recognize the key characters – the Masters and Servants – even though their roles may differ slightly in this storyline.
Okay, so the Holy Grail War is basically an all-out magical free-for-all! Mages summon legendary heroes – think kings, warriors, figures from the past – and pit them against each other in a fight to the death. The ultimate prize? Having any wish granted! Though, honestly, you just know things rarely go smoothly when wish-granting magic is involved.
It’s best to go into Heaven’s Feel knowing as little as possible, but be warned: it’s significantly darker and more violent than other Fate anime. The story centers on the tragic relationship between Shirou and Sakura, and it’s far from a simple love story. While the original visual novel is still the definitive experience, this movie trilogy is a fantastic tribute to both the Fate franchise and the stunning animation work of ufotable, the studio that really brought Fate into the mainstream. Heaven’s Feel feels like a beautiful and fitting culmination of their efforts.
The Garden Of Sinners
Inconsistent But Occasionally Brilliant Movie Series
| Japanese Title | Kara no Kyoukai |
|---|---|
| Genre | Thriller |
| Studio | Ufotable |
The Garden of Sinners is a series of eight movies and some short animated episodes based on Kinoko Nasu’s novels. It focuses on Shiki Ryougi, a woman with the ability to perceive when someone will die. The series deals with difficult topics like trauma and suicide, and can be challenging to watch. Because the story isn’t told in a straightforward order, the initial movies might not make a strong impression.
I have to admit, getting through all of the Garden of Sinners films takes some dedication. But it really pays off – it’s a deeply thoughtful and memorable anime, and honestly, I haven’t seen many like it. If you’re looking for the best parts, I’d recommend starting with Paradox Spiral and A Study in Murder – Part 2.
Haikyu!! Movie: The Dumpster Battle
The Best Sports Anime Has One Of The Best Sports Movies
| Japanese Title | Haikyuu!! Movie: Gomisuteba no Kessen |
|---|---|
| Genre | Sports |
| Studio | Production I.G |
Whether you’re reading the original manga or watching the anime, Haikyu!! consistently delivers great entertainment. The story has rarely faltered, maintaining a strong pace throughout. The Dumpster Battle continues this high quality, making it a worthy theatrical release with exceptional production values – even better than the already impressive series.
Like most big releases for fans of Haikyu!!, the new movie assumes you’ve seen everything – all four seasons, to be exact. Luckily, you can stream the whole series on Crunchyroll, making it easy to catch up. The movie, titled The Dumpster Battle, features a showdown between Karasuno and their toughest rivals, Nekoma, who are famous for their incredible defense, which is designed to challenge Karasuno’s fast-paced attacks.
Gintama: The Very Final
A Great Ending To An All-Time Shonen Masterpiece
| Japanese Title | Gintama: The Final |
|---|---|
| Genre | Action, Comedy |
| Studio | Bandai Namco Pictures |
After over 300 episodes and a few movies, Gintama concluded with a fantastic film. The Very Final truly lives up to its title, offering an exciting adventure where the Odd Jobs crew joins forces with both allies and enemies to finally defeat Utsuro. The movie mainly focuses on action, which is both intense and imaginative.
Humor is essential to Gintama, and The Very Final makes plenty of room for it. About halfway through the movie, it pauses for a full ten minutes to deliver one of the series’ funniest and most ridiculous jokes – and it totally works.
Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train
The Global Phenomenom Is On Crunchyroll
| Japanese Title | Kimetsu no Yaiba Movie: Mugen Ressha-hen |
|---|---|
| Genre | Action |
| Studio | Ufotable |
I recently watched Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train, and it’s easy to see why it’s become the most successful anime film ever. If you enjoyed the first season of Demon Slayer, you’ll love this – it really takes everything that was good and turns it up a notch. The animation is stunning, some of Ufotable’s best work, and the movie introduces a really engaging villain in Enmu. But the biggest standout for me was Kyojuro Rengoku – he quickly became one of my favorite characters in the whole series. It’s a fast-paced action movie, but it doesn’t rush through the important emotional beats. You can stream it on Crunchyroll if you’re interested.
Crunchyroll offers the Mugen Train arc as a TV series, but the movie is the better way to watch it – there’s no real benefit to choosing the TV version.
Spy x Family Code: White
A Delightful Comedy Adventure Anime Movie
| Japanese Title | Spy x Family Movie: Code: White |
|---|---|
| Genre | Comedy, Action |
| Studio | Wit Studio, CloverWorks |
Though not essential to the main plot of Spy x Family, the movie Code: White is thoroughly enjoyable. It expands on a familiar Spy x Family storyline, filling almost two hours with the show’s signature humor and surprisingly good action – the same elements that have made the anime so popular.
How much you enjoy this movie really depends on how much you like the Spy x Family series in general. If you were disappointed by season 2 because it felt like the plot slowed down for lighter, more comedic moments, you probably won’t be thrilled with Code: White. But if you just enjoy watching Anya, Loid, and Yor have fun together with some exciting adventures thrown in, you’ll likely love it. The movie is funny, visually stunning, and feels a bit more grand in scale than the show itself. Plus, the villain is a strong addition.
Card Captor Sakura Movie 2: The Sealed Card
A Magical Girl Anime Classic By Madhouse
| Japanese Title | Cardcaptor Sakura Movie 2: Fuuin Sareta Card |
|---|---|
| Genre | Magical Girl |
| Studio | Madhouse |
Crunchyroll streams both Cardcaptor Sakura movies, and they’re essential viewing for anyone who loves the classic magical girl anime. While the first movie is great, the second one is even better. The Sealed Card perfectly wraps up the original anime series with a memorable and fulfilling ending, as Sakura battles The Nothing – the final Clow Card.
Just like the TV show, the movie mixes action, comedy, drama, and romance. It handles all these elements well, creating a satisfying and complete experience. However, you really should watch the series first, because the movie continues the story and isn’t meant to be enjoyed on its own.
Fureru.
An Overlooked 2024 Anime Movie
| Japanese Title | Fureru. |
|---|---|
| Genre | Drama, Supernatural |
| Studio | CloverWorks |
Directed by Tatsuyuki Nagai with a script by Mari Okada, Fureru is a thoughtful and gentle film. It doesn’t rely on dramatic action, but instead slowly draws the viewer into its story. The film centers around three childhood friends who share a unique connection: they can read each other’s minds through physical touch. After years of comfortable routine, their lives are disrupted by the arrival of two new people, forcing the friends to examine the true strength of their bond.
Released in Japan in 2024, Fureru is a recent anime film that hasn’t gained much attention outside of its home country. Though not a major hit, it’s a surprisingly touching and well-crafted story, which is no surprise considering it was written by the acclaimed Okada.
Kaguya-sama: Love is War -The First Kiss That Never Ends-
More Kaguya Is Never A Bad Thing
| Japanese Title | Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: First Kiss wa Owaranai |
|---|---|
| Genre | Romance, Drama, Comedy |
| Studio | A-1 Pictures |
Most anime fans are already familiar with Kaguya-sama, a hugely popular comedy and romance series. Its latest release, The First Kiss That Never Ends, is a bit unusual. It was originally a movie, but on Crunchyroll it’s divided into four episodes. While the story flows well enough, it feels like a collection of shorter, self-contained segments, even though it’s consistently entertaining.
While The First Kiss That Never Ends has its funny moments, it’s generally a more serious part of the series, especially when it delves into the histories of Kaguya and Shinomiya. The storyline focusing on Ice Kaguya is a standout and one of the best parts of Kaguya-sama overall.
One Piece: Stampede
A Bunch Of One Piece Movies Are On Crunchyroll
| Japanese Title | One Piece Movie 14: Stampede |
|---|---|
| Genre | Action, Shonen |
| Studio | Toei Animation |
Crunchyroll features five official One Piece movies—Gold, Stampede, Strong World, Z, and Red. They also have a few special episodes that feel like movies, plus The Desert Princess and the Pirates, which retells the story from the Alabasta arc.
These five movies are essential viewing for anyone who enjoys the One Piece manga or anime. They feature fantastic animation and tell self-contained stories that feel like natural additions to the series, similar to filler arcs. Plus, they’re a fun way to see the entire Straw Hat crew adventuring together, which doesn’t happen as often in the main story.
I’ve seen all the One Piece movies, and while Strong World is the one I keep coming back to, I think Stampede is truly the best. It really feels like a fantastic tribute to everything that makes One Piece so great.
Given The Movie
A Heavy And Emotional BL Movie
| Japanese Title | Given Movie |
|---|---|
| Genre | Drama |
| Studio | Lerche |
This one-hour movie continues the story from the acclaimed 2019 series Given, but now focuses on the characters Haruki Nakayama and Akihiko Kaji. Like the series, it explores themes of sadness, loss, and healing, but this time centers around overcoming a broken relationship instead of dealing with a death.
I was surprised by how much the movie accomplished despite its short runtime. It didn’t just continue the story from the series, it really maximized every moment. Honestly, if you’ve watched the series, you absolutely need to see this film right away – it’s a must-watch!
The movie Hiiragi Mix is also enjoyable, with a greater focus on the developing relationship between Hiiragi and Shizusumi.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0
Arguably Even Better Than The Main Series
| Japanese Title | Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Movie |
|---|---|
| Genre | Action |
| Studio | MAPPA |
The story of Jujutsu Kaisen began with a prequel manga called Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School, which ultimately led to the creation of Jujutsu Kaisen. You don’t need to watch Jujutsu Kaisen 0 to enjoy the main series, but many fans consider it to be just as good – or even better – than what follows, so it’s definitely worth checking out.
I’m totally hooked on this story! It’s about Yuta Okkotsu, a high schooler who’s haunted by the ghost of his childhood friend, Rika. Things get crazy when he meets Satoru Gojo, a powerful teacher who invites him to a special school. This school isn’t like any other – it teaches you how to harness and control spirits! Joining is where Yuta really starts his journey to becoming a sorcerer, and honestly, it’s a wild ride!
Josee, the Tiger and the Fish
Maybe The Best Romance Anime Movie On Crunchyroll
| Japanese Title | Josee to Tora to Sakana-tachi |
|---|---|
| Genre | Romance, Drama |
| Studio | Bones |
Inspired by Seiko Tanabe’s story, Josee, the Tiger and the Fish is a charming and realistic romantic drama with a familiar but effective setup. The film centers on Tsuneo and Josee, and their evolving relationship. Tsuneo is hired to care for Josee, who uses a wheelchair and rarely ventures outside. Despite being around the same age, they come from very different backgrounds and have contrasting outlooks on life. At first, Josee is often difficult and frustrated with Tsuneo, making her a bit hard to like, but it’s easy to understand why she acts that way.
Once Tsuneo and Josee connect, Josee, the Tiger and the Fish becomes a truly special film – easily one of the best romance anime movies in recent years. Though generally cheerful, the story doesn’t shy away from serious moments, which ground the more fantastical scenes. And visually, the animation is consistently beautiful.
KonoSuba: God’s Blessing On This Wonderful World! Legend Of Crimson
An Explosively Fun Time
| Japanese Title | Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! Movie: Kurenai Densetsu |
|---|---|
| Genre | Comedy, Fantasy |
| Studio | J.C.Staff |
Looking for a funny anime? Check out KonoSuba! When Kazuma and his friends travel to Megumin’s hometown, their trip leads to plenty of funny and slightly embarrassing moments.
The Legend of Crimson movie has a faster pace and more focused story than the KonoSuba anime series, which often relies on comedic situations. However, it still captures the same spirit and humor that makes KonoSuba so enjoyable.
Sword Of The Stranger
A Minor Classic With Fantastic Action Sequences
| Japanese Title | Stranger: Mukou Hadan |
|---|---|
| Genre | Samurai, Historical |
| Studio | Bones |
Along with Ninja Scroll, Sword of the Stranger is widely considered one of the best samurai anime films ever made. The story takes place during Japan’s Sengoku period and centers on a young boy named Kotaro, who is fleeing a fate as a sacrifice orchestrated by forces from the Ming Dynasty. During his escape, Kotaro encounters Nanashi, a wandering swordsman, and eventually persuades him to become his protector on a journey to a temple.
The action sequences in Sword of the Stranger are beautifully animated and incredibly exciting – they’re worth watching the show for alone. But the series offers much more than just great fights, with a captivating world and characters you’ll quickly grow to care about.
Laid-Back Camp: The Movie
Even Cute Girls Doing Cute Things Grow Up
| Japanese Title | Yuru Camp Movie |
|---|---|
| Genre | Slice of Life |
| Studio | C-Station |
Fans of the cozy anime Laid-Back Camp have something to look forward to: a third season has been announced! The series surprised viewers in 2022 with a movie set years in the future, showing the characters as adults. Because this movie isn’t based on a manga, it’s considered a separate story that gives a glimpse of what might happen to Rin, Nadeshiko, and their friends down the line.
Even though it’s not based on the original manga, Laid-Back Camp: The Movie perfectly captures the heart and feel of the series. The characters remain endearing as adults, and their development feels natural and true to who they are.
Trigun: Badlands Rumble
A Bit Messy, But An Enjoyable Enough Movie
| Japanese Title | Trigun: Badlands Rumble |
|---|---|
| Genre | Action, Sci-Fi |
| Studio | Madhouse |
Madhouse’s Trigun is a true classic. The show, originally released in the ’90s, still holds up well today thanks to its animation, characters, humor, and action. Importantly, the story felt complete and didn’t need to be continued. Badlands Rumble, released about ten years later, offers a side story that isn’t crucial to the main plot, but it’s still an enjoyable experience and lets fans revisit the world of Trigun.
This movie is really aimed at longtime fans of the original series. While the animation is good and the action scenes are exciting, people unfamiliar with the story might find it confusing and fast-paced. The movie introduces some new characters, but they don’t add much and actually take away from the established favorites that made the original series so popular. The portrayal of Vash feels over-the-top at times, which ultimately hurts the movie’s impact.
The Boy And The Beast
Mamoru Hosoda’s Most Divisive Movie
| Japanese Title | Bakemono no Ko |
|---|---|
| Genre | Action, Drama |
| Studio | Studio Chizu |
Mamoru Hosoda consistently delivers films that are at least enjoyable, and his best work is truly exceptional. While The Boy and the Beast doesn’t quite reach that peak, it comes close, despite some moments where the story feels a little slow. The film follows Ren, a young boy who finds himself alone and begins following a monster named Kumatetsu, eventually becoming his apprentice in the Beast Kingdom. Though they argue and appear to dislike each other, Ren and Kumatetsu develop a strong bond over several years. When Ren returns to the human world and starts building relationships, the story becomes increasingly complex.
As expected, the animation in The Boy and the Beast is stunning and uniquely styled. The movie truly shines when it centers on the connection between Ren and Kumatetsu, though that relationship gets less focus in the second half. Even so, the film reaches some incredible emotional peaks.
Dragon Ball Super: Broly
The Peak Of Dragon Ball’s Modern Run
| Japanese Title | Dragon Ball Super: Broly |
|---|---|
| Genre | Action |
| Studio | Toei Animation |
As a long-time fan, I’ve been really impressed with Crunchyroll’s selection of Dragon Ball. They have almost the entire franchise available, including 16 movies that used to be hard to find. While some of the older Dragon Ball movies are more like extended episodes, titles like Cooler’s Revenge and Fusion Reborn are still great to watch. The series saw a revival in the 2010s with Battle of Gods, though that one isn’t on Crunchyroll. Luckily, all three of its follow-up movies are, and they’re just as good, if not better. Of those newer films, Dragon Ball Super: Broly really stands out as the best – it feels like a proper, big-screen event, more so than anything else in the Dragon Ball series.
This movie centers on Broly, an incredibly strong Saiyan who is driven by his father to get revenge on Vegeta. The film does a good job of explaining Broly’s past, making him a surprisingly sympathetic character, even though he remains a huge danger to Goku and the other Z Warriors. Like all good Dragon Ball stories, Broly features fantastic action sequences, and this movie delivers. Each fight is distinct and visually impressive thanks to the excellent animation.
Saga Of Tanya The Evil: The Movie
Even Better Than The Series
| Japanese Title | Youjo Senki Movie |
|---|---|
| Genre | Isekai, Military |
| Studio | Nut |
Isekai anime, where characters are transported to another world, are quite divisive – people usually either really enjoy them or dislike them intensely. Saga of Tanya the Evil follows many common tropes of the genre, featuring a powerful and intelligent main character who outmatches almost everyone else. However, it distinguishes itself by being set in a war-torn world reminiscent of World War One, blending both technology and magic into the conflict. The story also has a unique premise: a spiteful god forces the protagonist to be reborn as a young girl, driving her to seek revenge and destroy him.
The movie Saga of Tanya the Evil: The Movie is generally as good as the original series, but benefits from a bigger budget. The animation is excellent, and it feels like a full-fledged movie, not just an extended episode. The story introduces Mary Sioux as Tanya’s main opponent, portraying her as a saintly figure in contrast to Tanya’s devilish nature. The series lacked a truly worthy rival for Tanya, and this movie successfully addresses that issue.
Black Butler: Book Of The Atlantic
Ciel And Sebastian’s Cinematic Adventure
| Japanese Title | Kuroshitsuji Movie: Book of the Atlantic |
|---|---|
| Genre | Fantasy, Action, Mystery |
| Studio | A-1 Pictures |
Few anime balance lighthearted moments with serious themes as effectively as Black Butler. The series is a dark and visually striking fantasy set in Victorian England, exploring themes of revenge, obsession, and death, all while following a rather serious 13-year-old boy. Ciel and his demon butler, Sebastian, often solve mysteries for the Queen, and their latest adventure, Book of the Atlantic, takes them on a dangerous sea voyage to investigate reports of necromancy. The trip quickly turns deadly, and they soon encounter some unexpected allies and enemies.
Even if you ignore the anime sequel, Black Butler has always been a fun series, and Book of the Atlantic continues that trend. The movie looks great thanks to a higher budget, and it really shines as the story comes to a close. The central mystery is engaging and connects well with the overall plot, and it even includes some important story reveals – unlike many anime movies, Book of the Atlantic is considered part of the official storyline.
While Book of the Atlantic is an enjoyable movie, it’s best watched after seeing the previous installments: Black Butler, Book of Circus, and Book of Murder. You can find Black Butler and Book of Circus on Crunchyroll, but the two-part Book of Murder isn’t currently available there.
City Hunter Movies
Cult Classic Anime Movies
| Japanese Title | City Hunter |
|---|---|
| Genre | Action, Comedy |
| Studio | Sunrise |
City Hunter is a well-known manga and anime series that was especially popular in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Though it’s not as widely remembered today, the anime still holds up surprisingly well. You can find the complete series, including most of the movies, on Crunchyroll—it offers weeks of entertainment. The 2023 movie is the only one not currently available on the platform.
Ryo Saeba is a skilled detective known for his marksmanship and his habit of flirting with women. The City Hunter movies each tell their own story, but they work best if you already know the main characters. They’re not groundbreaking, but these action comedies are a fun and lighthearted way to spend an evening.
The Stranger By The Shore
Realistic Boys Love Romance
| Japanese Title | Umibe no Étranger |
|---|---|
| Genre | Romance |
| Studio | Studio Hibari |
Mio Chibana and Shun Hashimoto experience an immediate connection when they first meet on a beach, though they’re initially shy around each other. They quickly become comfortable and help each other grow. After a brief time together, they’re separated for three years before reuniting. The Stranger by the Shore centers on this second meeting, as Mio and Shun learn to embrace their true feelings for one another. This journey forces them to confront past hurts that have left them feeling isolated and unsure of themselves.
I was really impressed with this anime film from 2020. Despite being under an hour long, it didn’t feel hurried at all, and it managed to pack in a lot of emotional depth. It’s really a deep dive into the characters of Mio and Shun – you get to know them both as individuals and as a couple. Plus, the animation is stunning, and they created some truly beautiful and realistic settings.
Bungo Stray Dogs: Dead Apple
Packed With Top-Notch Action
| Japanese Title | Bungou Stray Dogs: Dead Apple |
|---|---|
| Genre | Action, Supernatural |
| Studio | Bones |
Bungo Stray Dogs is a consistently excellent anime series. All four seasons, including the 2018 movie Dead Apple, are currently available to stream on Crunchyroll. The movie picks up after the second season, with the Armed Detective Agency facing a new danger: a mysterious fog that gives people’s special abilities a physical presence. This causes widespread chaos in Yokohama, and the situation becomes even more puzzling when it appears Dazai is working with the enemy.
Dead Apple features impressive action and animation, as you’d expect from Studio Bones. But the movie truly shines because of its characters, especially Atsushi. The story pushes him to deal with his past more directly than before, leading to significant and compelling growth.
Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom
Overlord Is Always Entertaining, And This Movie Is No Exception
| Japanese Title | Overlord Movie 3: Sei Oukoku-hen |
|---|---|
| Genre | Isekai, Fantasy, Action |
| Studio | Madhouse |
As a huge fan of the Overlord series, I can tell you this movie, Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom, is really best enjoyed by those already invested – think around three and a half seasons under your belt! It definitely keeps the same quality as the show, with solid animation and a continuation of that awesome dark fantasy story about a seriously powerful villain climbing the ranks.
The Overlord series has had some ups and downs, with seasons 2 and 3 being a bit uneven. However, season 4 is the strongest yet, and The Sacred Kingdom continues that positive trend. If you liked seeing the story focus more on building a kingdom, you’ll enjoy this film, which really showcases Ainz’s cunning and the surprisingly good comedic timing of the anime.
My Hero Academia: Two Heroes, Heroes Rising, & You’re Next
Just Solid Blockbuster Action Films
| Japanese Title | Boku no Hero Academia the Movie 1: Futari no Hero |
|---|---|
| Genre | Action, Superhero |
| Studio | Bones |
Popular shonen anime often get movies, but these usually add extra content that doesn’t affect the main story. Two Heroes is different – it’s considered part of the official My Hero Academia timeline, even though it tells a self-contained story with limited impact on Deku’s overall arc. Like many anime action movies, Two Heroes packs a typical MHA story arc into a shorter runtime with a bigger budget. While not groundbreaking, the movie is enjoyable, especially a section showing a young All Might in America. The main plot isn’t particularly memorable, but it takes place on a unique island and the action moves quickly once it starts.
Released in 2019, Heroes Rising is a fairly standalone movie that isn’t essential to the main storyline. While it’s not a must-watch, it’s better than Two Heroes, as it gives more characters a chance to be involved. The villains aren’t particularly memorable – a common trait in My Hero Academia films – but they aren’t bad either.
You’re Next is the weakest MHA movie, but it is another watchable action fest.
Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie
Not Great, But Worth A Watch For GITS Fans
| Japanese Title | Koukaku Kidoutai: Shin Movie |
|---|---|
| Genre | Action, Sci-Fi, Mystery |
| Studio | Production I.G |
Besides the live-action film, Ghost in the Shell Arise is often the most divisive part of the Ghost in the Shell series. It used to be exclusive to Netflix, but now you can find the four-part OVA, ten-episode series, and concluding movie all on Crunchyroll, making it much easier to watch. But is it worth your time? That’s a tough question. If you’re new to the Ghost in the Shell world, I wouldn’t bother. Even long-time fans might find some of the creative choices in this installment a bit strange.
The movie Arise is known for its confusing storylines, and this film is no different. It begins with an explosion that kills a connected criminal, prompting the Major and Public Sector 9 to investigate. While the story explores intriguing ideas about different realities, the way it’s presented can be unclear and unsatisfying.
Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade
An Unsettling Horror Anime
| Japanese Title | Jin-Rou |
|---|---|
| Genre | Thriller |
| Studio | Production I.G |
Directed by Hiroyuki Okiura and written by Mamoru Oshii, Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade is a visually impressive film that showcases how well cel-shaded animation can hold up over time. The story is set in an alternate 1950s where Germany won World War II and occupies Japan. To control the population, the occupying forces employ a powerful and intimidating armored corps who unquestioningly follow even cruel orders. The film centers around Kazuki Fuse, a soldier who breaks ranks when given a questionable kill order.
Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade isn’t a fast-paced action movie; it focuses more on creating a mood and developing its characters. This slower approach can make it feel a bit drawn-out, especially in the middle, but the film still offers plenty to enjoy and admire.
Psycho-Pass: The Movie & Providence
The Movie Is A Must-Watch
| Japanese Title | Psycho-Pass Movie |
|---|---|
| Genre | Sci-Fi, Action, Thriller |
| Studio | Production I.G |
Psycho-Pass is known for having an uneven quality across its seasons. The first season is widely considered a brilliant sci-fi thriller and a standout anime. While it does leave some questions unanswered, it’s a complete story on its own, making sequels unnecessary. Unfortunately, the later seasons don’t live up to the standard set by the first, and struggle to capture the same feeling without the main characters Shinya and Akane. Seasons 2 and 3 are okay to watch, but pale in comparison.
Watching Psycho-Pass: The Movie and Providence felt like revisiting what I loved about the first season. I think they really succeeded because they kept the focus on Shinya and Akane. Plus, they looked fantastic – a definite improvement visually over the original series. While the plots weren’t the most groundbreaking, the stories were so focused on the characters, and that’s where they really stood out.
I wouldn’t say either of these movies are essential viewing, and it’s best to go in with modest expectations. That said, like later seasons of the show, the Psycho-Pass movies are generally enjoyable.
Unico Double Feature
A Few Crunchyroll Anime Movies For Kids
| Japanese Title | The Fantastic Adventures Of Unico & Unico in the Island of Magic |
|---|---|
| Genre | Fantasy, Kids |
| Studio | Madhouse |
Before creating the popular fantasy anime Frieren, the studio Madhouse made two films aimed at younger audiences, both based on works by Osamu Tezuka, a hugely important figure in manga history. Tezuka was known for writing stories children would love, and Unico is perhaps his most purely childlike creation. The story centers on a unicorn who spreads happiness, a wonderfully innocent idea for an anime. However, this ability upsets the gods, who believe they alone should control joy. In the first Unico movie, the gods kidnap the unicorn and leave him stranded, forcing him to find his way back home.
Are these movies worth watching if you’re over 10? Probably, but don’t expect too much. While Unico has some surprisingly dark scenes and can be fun, particularly the first film, it’s not a masterpiece. The animation hasn’t aged as well as some other films from the 80s, and Unico himself, though cute, isn’t a very dynamic or interesting character.
Code Geass: Lelouch Of The Re;surrection
A Mixed Bag, But Enough Positives To Warrant A Watch
| Japanese Title | Code Geass: Fukkatsu no Lelouch |
|---|---|
| Genre | Sci-Fi |
| Studio | Sunrise |
While opinions on Code Geass season 2 have become mixed over time, the original ending is still widely praised as one of the best in anime. That’s why Code Geass Lelouch of the Re;surrection took a risk by changing that ending, though thankfully the movie framed itself as a separate timeline, not a true sequel. Because of this, the movie isn’t essential viewing for fans – the events don’t impact the original story – but it’s still a fun watch.
The film begins with C.C. bringing Lelouch back to life, motivated by her love for him, and this takes up the majority of the first half. Later, the story centers on a conflict with the Kingdom of Zilkhstan and its queen. While neither storyline is particularly deep, they create some exciting action scenes and heartwarming interactions between Lelouch and C.C.
Black Jack: The Movie
Perfect Movie For A Random Tuesday Night
| Japanese Title | Black Jack the Movie |
|---|---|
| Genre | Drama |
| Studio | Tezuka Productions |
Osamu Tezuka’s famous manga, Black Jack, has been made into live-action movies, anime TV shows, short-form anime series, and animated films. If you’re new to Black Jack, the 1996 movie is a great place to start, but the 2004 anime series is also excellent.
The film quickly introduces us to the main character, Black Jack, explaining who he is and what drives him, all while telling a captivating story that blends medical details with heartfelt moments. Whether you’re a fan of the original Black Jack stories or completely new to them, you’re likely to enjoy this movie.
Street Fighter 2: The Animated Movie
Absurdly Good Animation For A Video Game Anime Movie
| Japanese Title | Street Fighter II Movie |
|---|---|
| Genre | Action, Martial Arts |
| Studio | Group TAC |
Although the new Street Fighter movie may offer something interesting, Street Fighter 2: The Animated Movie remains the best adaptation of the games so far. In fact, it’s arguably the only Street Fighter movie that truly feels like a faithful adaptation, rather than a completely new story with familiar faces. While the plot isn’t groundbreaking, the film excels in what matters most: its impressive animation and exciting action sequences.
Even today, Street Fighter 2: The Animated Movie looks great, especially if you’re a fan of traditional animation. The action scenes are really well done and feature a lot of memorable characters from Capcom, making the movie enjoyable just for those moments.
Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture
Crunchyroll Loves Its Anime Fighting Movies
| Japanese Title | Garou Densetsu: The Motion Picture |
|---|---|
| Genre | Action, Adventure |
| Studio | Studio Comet |
I was pleasantly surprised to see Capcom’s Street Fighter get a fun anime adaptation, so it’s great SNK got the same treatment with Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture. While it doesn’t quite reach the level of Street Fighter 2: The Animated Movie, it’s still a really enjoyable watch, especially if you’re familiar with all the characters from the original King of Fighters game. The story follows Terry and Andy Bogard, Joe Higashi, and Mai Shiranui as they race around the world to collect six pieces of armor before the villainous Laocorn Gaudeamus can get his hands on them – it’s packed with action and adventure!
When it comes to fight scenes, Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture is incredibly fun. However, the movie occasionally slows down, leading to some frustratingly slow parts. Despite this, there’s enough exciting action to make it worth watching.
Check out the Fatal Fury OVAs as well, both of which take place before The Motion Picture.
Bayonetta: Bloody Fate
I Love Bayonetta, So I Had Fun With This One
| Japanese Title | Bayonetta Bloody Fate |
|---|---|
| Genre | Action, Fantasy, Supernatural |
| Studio | Gonzo |
Let’s be honest, whether you’ll enjoy this anime movie really depends on how much you love the first Bayonetta game by PlatinumGames. If you’re a fan of fast-paced action games like I am, Bayonetta is probably a favorite, and you’ll likely appreciate getting to revisit that world and those characters. Bayonetta: Bloody Fate assumes you already know the story, so it doesn’t offer much for people new to the series beyond some good action scenes. The Bayonetta games are known for their wild, sometimes confusing, storytelling, but the core appeal is simple: a powerful witch confidently takes down angels with incredible style.
Bloody Fate doesn’t simply retell the story of the original game; it offers a fresh take with some unexpected twists. While devoted fans will likely love these changes, newcomers might find it very confusing. I enjoyed it personally, but it’s not one of Gonzo’s strongest anime films. The animation is generally good, though clearly made on a limited budget. The computer-generated imagery isn’t always successful and occasionally detracts from the overall experience.
