Trevor McEwan, who worked on the performance capture and character model for Crimson Desert, recently chatted with fans on Reddit, sharing his thoughts on the game’s story. Pearl Abyss first unveiled Crimson Desert in 2020, and after six years of development, it’s scheduled to release on March 19, 2026. While the game faced several delays during its creation, fans remain enthusiastic about its upcoming launch.
Even though its development wasn’t without challenges, Crimson Desert has been a commercial success, surpassing several sales goals. It’s already sold over 5 million copies in under a month and is poised to become one of 2026’s best-selling games. While critics had mixed reactions, players are enjoying the game, and Pearl Abyss is actively improving it with regular updates. The story, however, remains a common complaint among fans, as it’s considered one of the game’s weaker aspects.
Crimson Desert Performance Capture and Kliff Model Discusses Lackluster Plot
I was so excited to see Trevor McEwan, who is Kliff in Crimson Desert, do an AMA on the game’s subreddit! It’s amazing the game has already sold over 5 million copies. He answered all sorts of fun questions – everything from his favorite Korean food now that he lives there, to what it was like using the props during motion capture. We got some really cool behind-the-scenes details! A lot of us were also really curious about Yann, that controversial character, and Trevor talked about him a lot too. It was a great session!
Some players have expressed disappointment with the story in Crimson Desert, feeling it doesn’t measure up to the game’s other strengths. When asked about this, the developer, McEwan, acknowledged the criticism. While he agreed the narrative might be somewhat simple, he believes the game excels in other areas. He also pointed out that Crimson Desert includes a wealth of hidden collectibles that expand on the game’s lore for players willing to seek them out.
McEwan also discussed Kliff and the intentional choice to portray him as somewhat of a blank slate, allowing players to project their own interpretations onto the character. He believes Kliff is deliberately guarded, hinting at hidden depths beneath a reserved exterior. As a member of the Greymane faction in Crimson Desert, Kliff deeply values their mission and considers them his family, finding purpose and belonging within the group. Interestingly, voice actor Alec Newman based Kliff’s voice on a family member, debunking a fan’s suggestion that it was inspired by Keanu Reeves.
