As a seasoned observer of the intricate tapestry of human relationships, I must say that each of these characters has left a lasting impression on me, albeit for vastly different reasons.
The subject of love is one that has fascinated and frustrated artists, poets, and scholars for millennia. The result is the creation of many a narrative about odd circumstances from which love can arise. Somewhat fascinating love stories arise from romantic liaisons between good and evil.
Love, portrayed as an overpowering and triumphant entity, adds an enjoyable element to these stories. At times, love breaks down any obstacle, while at others it may merely serve as a deceptive facade for ulterior motives. Regardless of its nature, these characters often find themselves entangled in romantic relationships with the main characters due to different circumstances.
5. Maria Thorpe
A Star-Crossed Lover
She was a bold English noblewoman and a templar, yet secretly loved Altaïr, a Levantine assassin, despite their contrasting roles. At first, she was manipulated by her superior to lure Altaïr, but he spared her life. Known for her spirited nature, Maria often engaged in fights and sometimes assumed male roles because women were seldom involved in wars. Regrettably, she spent a significant period channeling her warrior spirit into the Crusades’ cause. However, when she joined forces with Altaïr, she became his voice of wisdom.
Initially unaware, Maria inadvertently shared details about the Templar Order with Altair during a time when they were still adversaries. Over time, Maria came to stand against a New World Order that the Templars aimed to establish, and intentionally joined forces with Altair. After Altair assassinated Armand Bouchart, the Grand Master of the Templar Order, he chose to stay with Maria. They got married and had two sons, the youngest being Sef, who was a descendant of Maria through his mother’s line and an ancestor to Desmond Miles. Tragically, Maria’s loyalty to Altair did not save her life, as she was killed by Swami – a powerful member of the Levantine Brotherhood of Assassins, who rose within the ranks as the organization became tainted and strayed from its principles. The loss of Maria left an indelible mark on Altair, causing him great sorrow for the rest of his existence.
4. Benny
A Foe With Benefits
Occasionally, the character’s avatar’s gender plays a crucial role in determining the romantic paths of certain characters within the game. While modern titles are making strides in depicting diverse sexualities, it’s important to note that some characters are strictly attracted to one gender, which can influence the gameplay experience. Consequently, specific characters may only be potential partners for a particular gender. For instance, Benny from Fallout: New Vegas is an example of such a character, only being available as a love interest for specific genders.
Benny is one of Mr. House’s underlings, belonging to a tribe that backed his rule over Vegas. This affiliation granted him authority over House’s technology and marginalized those opposed, leading to their hardships, suffering, and in some cases, death from hunger. Yet, this power didn’t quench his ambition; he secretly plots to seize control of New Vegas while staying hidden under House’s watchful eye. His deceitful character has earned him disdain among nearly everyone who is aware of him.
Despite being famously associated with romantic roles by actor Matthew Perry, Benny appears less romantic in this context. Instead of a charming introduction, he resorts to shooting a courier for their package. However, it’s revealed that a female courier with the Black Widow perk can still choose to be with him. Although she may seem opposed to him, if the player desires, Benny will lead them to his room.
In the Las Vegas strip, this situation could serve as a pretext for eliminating Benny. However, if the player chooses, they can choose to spare his life after completing their task. Subsequently, Benny may be found in Caesar’s tent, and once more, it is up to the player to decide what becomes of him. Despite their relationship being cold, the player has the option to make additional efforts to liberate Benny from the Legion. But following this action, they will never cross paths with him again.
3. Megaera
A Romanceable Boss Character
In Hades, repetitive elements are skillfully utilized to enhance the overall experience. This is accomplished, in part, through its affinity system, which enables Zagreus to forge connections with characters he encounters repeatedly across the game’s four levels and the central hub world. One of these characters is Megaera, the eldest of the Furies. Assigned by Hades to manage affairs in the Underworld and torment wrongdoers, she serves as Zagreus’ first formidable opponent, acting as the initial boss he must defeat before escaping Tartarus.
With repeated battles against this boss, its difficulty level may change. Growing tired of Megaera’s perceived ineptitude, Hades might occasionally replace her with one of her more fearsome sisters, either Alecto or Tisiphone, who are typically forbidden from residing within the House of Hades. Interestingly, there is a chance to engage all three of the Furies simultaneously during combat.
Initially, as Zagreus tried to escape the Underworld, Megaera distanced herself from him. But when Zagreus worked on mending his bond with his father, a reconciliation between them and Megaera also occurred. Depending on the player’s decisions, the narrative may progress further. If affinity with Megaera is maximized, she can offer romantic possibilities for Zagreus, which the player can opt to accept. It’s worth noting that they don’t have to be exclusive. Megaera is one of three potential love interests for Zagreus. Notably, Megaera could be involved in a polyamorous relationship with both Zagreus and Thanatos, assuming affinity with both characters has been maximized, and separate romantic connections have been established with each of them.
2. Gangrel
The Madly In Love King
In the game Fire Emblem: Awakening, the first significant antagonist is known as King Gangrel, who was once a common thief. With a lineage that appears to be of noble origin, he regained power by forging an alliance with the Grimleal, a cult focused on the fearsome Fell Dragon, Grima. Although Gangrel himself does not follow the teachings of the Grimleal, he utilizes their power to bolster his own position and prefers to be called “a follower of the Grimleal in name only.
Initially, this character aggressively works towards sparking a conflict, leading to excessive violence that culminates in his apparent demise. He has a history of mistreating his underlings and enjoys the harshness his authority allows him. His rough language and unrefined demeanor stand out compared to the manners typical of rulers within the game, possibly emphasizing his past as a common criminal. His actions prompted Emmeryn, the Ylissean Exalt, to attempt suicide in a failed bid to halt the impending war. Although she survived, her fall caused severe brain damage and left her with amnesia. She was thought to be deceased before being possibly rescued by the Shepherds.
Following what appeared to be Gangrel’s demise, he found himself among a Ylissean pirate gang, spearheaded by a berserker named Zanth. However, his tenure with this crew was marked by mistreatment and self-reflective torment over the unscrupulous acts he had perpetrated. Despite the hardships Chrom had experienced at Gangrel’s hand, there came a point where Chrom managed to recruit him, engaging in three separate conversations with the deceased king during these encounters. Ultimately, Gangrel decided that he would rather perish for Chrom’s cause than continue serving under Zanth. Post-war, the details of his final days remain ambiguous; all that can be confirmed is that he passed away within a few years.
Despite their circumstances, Gangrel has the ability to find love with Robin, a female character, and together they have a son named Morgan. Through various conversations aimed at furthering his own goals, Gangrel can unlock a potential final conversation if Robin is not married yet. In this conversation, he confesses that his earlier motives were merely a pretext to propose marriage to Robin. While she expresses some initial surprise, Robin eventually agrees, feeling honored to spend her life with him. Looking at his fiancée, Gangrel wonders how she managed to make him fall in love with her, implying that if she’s trying to transform him, it seems to be working. The outcome of this storyline is uncertain, but as with any partner taken by Robin, scholars believe that she loved him more than anyone else.
1. Dahlia Hawthorne
A Toxic Relationship
In a college setting, romance can be tumultuous, but few could match the chaos of Phoenix Wright’s relationship with Dahlia Hawthorne. A self-centered individual with a penchant for crime, Hawthorne had numerous murders to her name, all carefully concealed. She played significant roles in Mia Fey’s first two trials, both as a witness and the main offender. Her actions extended to poisoning the coffee of Mia’s colleague, Diego Armando, which left him comatose until after her death.
She managed to accomplish this by employing a poisoned bottle charm, which she had secretly taken from her ex-boyfriend, Doug Swallow. Afterward, she deceitfully placed the evidence on an unaware and inexperienced lawyer named Phoenix Wright as a misguided gesture of affection. Her intention was to kill Wright, but her identical twin, Iris, convinced her to merely retrieve the charm instead. To carry out this plan, Iris took her sister’s place, and eventually formed a genuine relationship with Wright. Nevertheless, Hawthorne continued to manipulate the situation for her own benefit.
Due to her sister failing to find a necklace, Dahlia considered poisoning Wright’s cold medicine in desperation. Meanwhile, Doug Swallow intended to alert Wright about his girlfriend’s deceitful actions. However, this revelation infuriated Wright, causing him to shove Doug and flee, leaving Dahlia to shock Wright with live power cables, resulting in his death.
This resulted in Wright being the prime suspect for murder, with Mia Fey acting as his defense attorney. Although it took extra effort on Mia’s part to break Wright from her sway, she succeeded in proving Dahlia was the guilty party, which resulted in her eventual execution. The whole incident was deeply traumatic for Wright, and he refused to discuss it with anyone for quite some time as a result. From that point forward, Phoenix dedicated himself to studying law, and became a protégé of Mia Fey, before her untimely demise. Phoenix would later find out the truth about his romance with Iris, whose existence Phoenix was unaware of until years later.
