Beyond Good & Evil 2 Development Reportedly Plagued By Management Issues

As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic disillusionment when it comes to Beyond Good & Evil 2. Having eagerly awaited its release since its initial announcement back in 2008, the ongoing development issues surrounding this much-anticipated sequel have left me feeling like a kid waiting for Christmas, only to find a lump of coal in my stocking.

2008 marked the initial announcement of Beyond Good & Evil 2. This sequel was re-introduced during Ubisoft’s Press Conference at E3 2017, generating a lot of excitement. Unfortunately, it seems that the game is still not nearing release.

Michel Ancel, the mastermind behind the original “Beyond Good & Evil” game and the creator of the “Rayman” series, has shared some intriguing insights into the happenings behind the curtain.

Ancel, who parted ways with Ubisoft in 2020, is renowned for launching the popular Rayman series. He started working on Beyond Good & Evil 2 in 2017, but departed from the project and the company three years later. In an exclusive conversation with Superpouvoir, he discusses the major hurdles encountered during the game’s challenging production process.

There was an excessive amount of disagreements among managers. The artistic director yearned for continuous revisions, the game director aimed to create a game based on randomly generated dungeons, while I fantasized about space exploration. Unfortunately, we failed to find common ground and the game director diverted the project towards other concepts.

In such circumstances, teams can feel lost and unsure of who is in control and calling the shots. The role of the producer is to rectify these issues, but it seems that didn’t occur. Yves Guillemot himself had to intervene in Montpellier to get things under control, yet it wasn’t sufficient as the game director persisted in his obstinacy. Reading in Libé that I was the one directing the game and demanding changes left me speechless. I have never doubted a decision regarding BGE2. I would be open to talking about this with anyone who might question my stance on the matter.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 Is Plagued By Unresolved Issues at Management

The main point here is that there’s tension among the management team. Despite everyone’s enthusiasm for the project, there seems to be an excessive amount of individuals vying for authority. Ancel emphasizes that no individual should be blamed for these issues. He openly acknowledges his own role in contributing to these problems at times.

It’s on me to take a larger share of the responsibility, as I could have done a better job defending the project, being more actively involved, and showing more understanding towards my colleagues.

Just last year, Ubisoft confirmed that progress on Beyond Good & Evil 2 was moving smoothly. Yet, a month later, we shared news about Ubisoft Montpellier being under review due to an escalating issue of employee exhaustion. Notably, it’s Ubisoft Montpellier who is leading the development of Beyond Good & Evil 2.
