Batman: Arkham Shadow’s New Companion is Vital to Bruce Wayne’s Story

Batman: Arkham Shadow’s New Companion is Vital to Bruce Wayne’s Story

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the Arkham series has always been a favorite, and Batman: Arkham Shadow stands out as a shining gem among the trilogy. The introduction of Dr. Leslie Thompkins adds a depth to the narrative that was previously missing, offering a glimpse into Bruce Wayne’s childhood and the profound impact these characters had on shaping him into the Caped Crusader we know today.

In Rocksteady’s trilogy of Arkham games, Alfred Pennyworth consistently stood by Bruce Wayne as a steadfast ally. However, it’s important to note that Alfred has shown his doubts about Bruce’s decisions and actions on occasion. Yet, he remains unwavering in his commitment to helping Batman fight crime in Gotham City and in providing moral support for Bruce. It wasn’t until the game Batman: Arkham Origins that Alfred openly expressed concerns about Bruce becoming Batman. Interestingly, this concern might have come a bit too late in the narrative since he had been encouraging Bruce up until then.

In the gripping conclusion of “Origins,” I found myself fully convinced by Bruce’s arguments about the necessity of his controversial and dramatic actions in the face of Gotham’s rampant corruption – and that, my friends, set the stage for what followed.

Batman: Arkham Shadow’s Dr. Leslie Thompkins is a Sight for Sore Arkhamverse Eyes

In the Batman: Arkham Shadow series, Leslie appears to reluctantly accept Bruce Wayne’s nocturnal endeavors, much like Alfred did, but it is evident that she also appreciates the significance and essential nature of his duties in Gotham City, as Batman refers to them as “crime prevention.” Among the characters, Leslie might be the one with the strongest alignment towards lawfulness and good, given her role as a caretaker at Youth Crisis Centers and her recent employment at Blackgate Penitentiary’s infirmary. Her goals often revolve around rehabilitation, albeit in complex, debatable manners within the context of the story.

Leslie finds herself caught up in the chaos caused by the Rats when she and Harvey Dent, who was both a protegee of hers and raised alongside Bruce as a foster brother, become targeted at Solomon Wayne Courthouse. The bond between Bruce and Harvey grows stronger due to Leslie’s influence, as they both regard her as a mutual friend and guiding figure. Bruce’s discussions with her in Blackgate’s infirmary offer insights, as she candidly and sternly reveals more about Bruce, speaking directly to him rather than Irving “Matches” Malone or even Batman.

As a gamer, I can’t help but reflect on Leslie’s guidance and words, which, to be honest, didn’t entirely deter Bruce from his lifelong commitment as the Dark Knight. Yet, it’s undeniable that her kindness played a pivotal role in shaping how he channelled his rage. Instead of unleashing it aimlessly, he found a productive and constructive outlet that turned out to be a blessing for Gotham City, a place plagued by violent crime and super-villains who were too cunning for the GCPD, whose morals were often questionable early in Batman’s career.

Batman: Arkham Shadow Teases Leslie’s Future Involvement in the Franchise, But at a Cost

During the credits of Batman: Arkham Shadow, a conversation is held concerning Bruce Wayne’s investigation into a character previously known as “the Wayward Rat,” now referred to as “former Rat.” This individual was an adversary of Batman at the Monarch Theatre. Game director Ryan Payton hinted that this storyline may continue in the future, leaving us curious about Leslie’s role given her existing relationship with Bruce, as she provides him counseling from time to time.

Without a doubt, it’s worth noting that Batman: Arkham Shadow is significant as it introduces Leslie for the first time within the Arkhamverse. However, this isn’t her initial mention in the series, as she had been referenced before, albeit sparsely, considering the vastness of the franchise as a whole.

In the game “Batman: Arkham City“, there’s a nod to her well-known clinic, implying she might still be present. However, she’s conspicuously missing from every other “Arkham” game.

It’s quite plausible that she won’t be seen often in upcoming events, but she might take a supporting role behind the scenes during Batman’s crusade as Gotham’s protector. In the game “Batman: Arkham Shadow,” Leslie is portrayed as a nurturing figure for Bruce, which gives her an important role in the storyline, regardless of whether future “Arkham” games include her or not.
