Upon examining the Turtle Beach Stealth Pivot, my friend expressed astonishment at the novelty of its pivoting mechanism, wondering why no one else had thought of it before. However, it’s possible that similar ideas have been conceived, but this implementation in a controller is remarkably inventive and well-executed. In the era of 16-bit consoles and even the PlayStation and Saturn, there was an abundance of gimmicky controllers, none of which seemed to find lasting success. For instance, remember that peculiar twisty Namco controller or the SNES pads with an overwhelming number of buttons and switches, seemingly designed by a hyperactive child on a sugar rush? I guess you had to experience it to understand.
In another vein, let’s discuss the Turtle Beach Stealth Pivot, the latest addition to the “Stealth” series of hardware, following closely on the success of the Stealth Ultra. This device features a revolutionary pivot system that allows the analog sticks to be flipped 180 degrees instantly, offering numerous ways to play your favorite games. At one moment, it operates like a standard dual-stick setup, and the next, it can be transformed into something reminiscent of the Sega Saturn layout, featuring a joystick and two rows of three buttons. Being a devoted fighting game enthusiast with years of practice, I can easily adapt to playing games using a joypad if needed, as demonstrated by my 100 hours spent on Street Fighter 6 on Steam Deck. In situations where comfort is crucial, such as playing on a console while lying in bed, a bulky arcade stick might not be ideal. However, this compact device has proven incredibly useful in the Smith household.
The Turtle Beach Stealth Pivot boasts a premium design and feel, with a price tag of approximately £120. However, this cost is justified by the innovative features it offers, such as the ability to customize your layout using a built-in screen on the front. This screen illuminates attractively, reminiscent of the Dreamcast VMU, but with a modern twist. You can save multiple profiles and switch between them using the bumpers. Additionally, you can adjust settings like mic/headset volume, assign different functions to the back buttons, and even speed up the trigger throw for quicker responses.
The device offers an excellent response and comfort, utilizing anti-drift technology for smooth stick control, a top-notch D-Pad, and no noticeable lag in any of the scenarios I encountered. I’ve tested it on multiple devices. It can be connected to a PC or a docked Steam Deck via a Bluetooth dongle, which is simple and quick to set up. Unfortunately, there’s no wireless functionality with Xbox, requiring a USB-C cable instead. However, I was delighted to find that it functioned flawlessly on my Android smartphone as well, and it can also pair with smart TVs.
This device boasts an impressive 20-hour battery life in wireless mode, which is truly remarkable. However, it lacks wireless functionality compared to some other devices, and this, along with issues related to the Control Center app and certain features, are its only significant drawbacks.
Apart from a few minor flaws, I have no complaints about the excellent business venture by Turtle Beach. If a PlayStation compatible version becomes available, I would eagerly seize the opportunity. The ingenious pivot system, seamlessly integrated and user-friendly, leaves one wondering why others haven’t adopted it yet. This controller stands among the best on the market, my preferred choice for both Xbox and PC gaming activities.
