There’s More to Marvel Rivals’ Iron Fist Than Meets The Eye

There's More to Marvel Rivals' Iron Fist Than Meets The Eye

As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of Marvel universe immersion under my belt, I must say that the latest addition to the Marvel Rivals roster has caught me off guard – in a good way! The developers have taken a bold step by introducing us to an Iron Fist who is far from the Danny Rand we’ve grown accustomed to.

As a gamer, I’ve found myself in an uncharted territory – the “Timestream Entanglement” brought forth by Doctor Doom and his 2099 version, merging various universes and timelines into one chaotic scene. This intriguing concept opens up Marvel Rivals’ developers to a boundless universe of characters, pulling heroes and villains from any timeline for the game roster.

In the lineup of Marvel Rivals, you can find instances of cross-universe ingenuity, such as a tech-savvy Captain America revived from ice in the 2080s, and a Black Panther who rules the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda. The Iron Fist in this series deviates slightly from the traditional fan image, but not due to multiverse manipulations.

Marvel Rivals’ Iron Fist is Not The Version Most Fans Expected

Danny Rand Is The Most Iconic Iron Fist

First appearing in Marvel Premiere #15 back in 1974, Iron Fist is a martial arts expert who possesses the extraordinary ability known as the Iron Fist. The initial identity of this superhero is Danny Rand, a New York City native who winds up in the mythical city of K’un-L’un as a child. After his wealthy parents perished en route, young Danny finds himself an orphan in K’un-L’un and is brought up by Lei Kung the Thunderer, one of the city’s most formidable warriors.

For a span of ten years, Danny Rand devotes himself to mastering martial arts. Eventually, he’s given the opportunity to engage in combat with Shou-Lao the Immortal, an immensely powerful dragon whose fiery core resides in a gloomy subterranean cave beneath the city. Following their fierce battle and the dragon’s demise, Rand submerges his hands into the dragon’s molten heart, thereby acquiring the Iron Fist ability. This unique skill empowers him to harness and manage his life energy, bestowing upon him extraordinary agility, swiftness, strength, and endurance.

Following his acquisition of the Iron Fist’s power, Danny Rand makes his way back to New York City with a mission: track down the man responsible for his father’s death during their journey to K’un-L’un. Yet, he chooses not to pursue vengeance against this individual. Empowered as Iron Fist, Rand teams up with Luke Cage (Power Man) and together they establish the Heroes for Hire team. Generally speaking, in most Iron Fist tales across the Marvel universe, Danny Rand is the one concealed behind the mask, but that’s not true in the series called “Marvel Rivals“.

Who Is Marvel Rivals’ Iron Fist?

Making its debut in May 2018 within the “Warriors of Three Sovereigns #1”, the character Lin Lie was specifically developed by NetEase and Marvel for the Chinese audience. Initially introduced as a Shanghai college student, he gains possession of the potent Sword of Fu Xi, a legendary figure from Chinese folklore. As it turns out, Lin Lie learns that he’s a descendant of Fu Xi, wielding the ancestral sword to transform into the demon-hunting master known as Sword Master.

In the 2022 limited series titled “The Death of Doctor Strange“, character Lin Lie encounters a vicious demonic kumiho in battle. The fight results in the Sword of Fu Xi breaking, leaving Lie in a perilous state. Miraculously, he regains consciousness on the shores of K’un-L’un, where the dragon Shou-Lao imbues him with the Iron Fist power. As of this year’s “Iron Fist 50th Anniversary Special“, Lin Lie and Rand’s apprentice, Pei, share the title of Iron Fist.
