As a long-time fan of Indiana Jones, I must say that 2024 has been quite the year for our favorite archaeologist! The release of “Indiana Jones of the Great Circle” has truly captured the essence of adventure and mystery that we’ve all come to love from this franchise.
Although the final film in the Indiana Jones series, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (2023), left fans feeling somewhat underwhelmed, the recently released “Indiana Jones of the Great Circle” video game for Xbox and PC has been met with great success this year. It seems that the appeal of Indiana Jones still lingers; the story needs to be compelling enough to satisfy the demand.
That was arguably lacking in the final two films, including 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
Douglas Reilly, Lucasfilm Games’ Vice President and General Manager, recently chatted with Variety about the upcoming release of their game, Great Circle. If this game turns out to be a commercial success, it could lead to more Indiana Jones games down the line. As for now, they’re diligently working on downloadable content (DLC), a fact confirmed by Reilly himself. “At the moment, our primary goal is to bring this game to the public and focus on the DLC, aiming for its success.
Regarding the prospect of Indiana Jones in future video games: It’s quite possible that this will occur. Moreover, the creator mentions, “We are always on the hunt for captivating narratives.” Fortunately, there is ample room between the movies where we could continue to spin more exciting Indiana Jones tales that I believe would be highly intriguing.
How Future Indiana Jones Games May Affect The Franchise’s Timeline
Based on the sequential order of the Indiana Jones films, there’s ample opportunity to continue crafting tales about Dr. Jones. We also know that “Great Circle” takes place in 1937, which is a year following Raiders of the Lost Ark, two years after Temple of Doom, and one year before Last Crusade. This timeline is as condensed as it gets; Kingdom of the Crystal Skull happens in 1957, and Dial of Destiny occurs in 1969.
It’s clear that the later release dates for the last two Indiana Jones films are likely because of Harrison Ford’s advanced age. After all, it seems implausible for an 80-year-old actor like Ford to portray a character in the 1930s. Instead, the story continues in video games, with Lucasfilm choosing Troy Baker for the lead role, as they felt that Ford’s age might not be suitable for the part.
Reilly spoke in depth about the casting process, the amount of input they had at Lucasfilm, and their involvement in development.
According to Douglas Reilly, Vice President and General Manager at Lucasfilm Games, this is the location where we have the most control over these games. We don’t dictate how the teams manage their development or day-to-day operations. However, when it comes to aspects that relate to our IPs (Intellectual Properties), we are actively involved in ensuring that they embody the essence of Indiana Jones, such as approving casting choices and reviewing concept art, modeling, final art, and so on. For a game like this, getting the character right is crucial; if not, it won’t feel like an authentic Indiana Jones experience. The physical representation by MachineGames and Troy’s exceptional voice acting make you forget that it’s not Harrison Ford when you play. He does such a great job!
