As a long-time fanatic of the Soulsborne series, I’ve faced my fair share of nightmarish enemies that have tested my patience and sanity. But among all these terrifying creatures, there are some that stand out as the absolute pinnacle of frustration – the ones that make me want to hurl my controller across the room in sheer exasperation!
Should you tally the number of games FromSoftware has produced throughout their career, you’d find numerous masterpieces, countless unforgettable boss battles, yet also a multitude of challenging (or frustrating for some) opponents.
Among the numerous types of mobs available, not all are enjoyable to battle. Some are less appealing due to deliberate design choices, while others simply cause frustration.
Although I can handle characters who eliminate you instantly with a single strike (knight) or shoot you down from long distances (archer), I do find it overly inconvenient when animals like dogs and reindeer seem to materialize unexpectedly.
“Truthfully, there are many bothersome instances I could point out, but for simplicity, let me express my frustrations by listing the top ten most exasperating foes from the Soulsborne series.
10. Basilisk
The Icon of Annoyance

In the realm of Dark Souls, the Basilisk stands not just as a widely recognized character, but as one that instills deep-seated fear.
Should I share my initial encounter with them in The Depths, let me tell you, I was predominantly uneasy rather than irritated. This was mainly due to the looming danger of being afflicted with a curse, which would significantly diminish my health meter.
Nevertheless, I feel the community has exaggerated how irritating they can be. Although they attack in groups, they have low health and no poise, so dispatching them isn’t that complicated.
Of course, for Soulsborne enthusiasts, nothing quite epitomizes “annoying” like certain elements of these games. Therefore, including them in the list was an absolute necessity.
9. Frozen Reindeer
Hatred’s Embodiment

Every time I create a list about Dark Souls 2, I find myself repeatedly defending it as an underappreciated masterpiece, except when discussing the Frigid Outskirts.
In the Crown of the Ivory King DLC, the cooperative zone strikes me as one of the most challenging and frustrating experiences I’ve encountered, largely due to the Frozen Reindeer. Regardless of my character build, traversing this area is always a difficult task.
They’re powerful, have a huge health bar, appear out of nowhere, and make a ton of noise, so they make you feel anxious just at the thought of having to go back there.
To be honest, these issues don’t rank high due to the fact that this aspect is discretionary, and the main challenge isn’t so much about their design but rather the limited visibility in the Frosty Periphery.
8. Jailer
Say Goodbye To Your Health Bar

In Dark Souls 3, several parts make it infuriatingly challenging, but none quite match the anger-provoking experience of the Irythill Dungeon, primarily due to the formidable presence of the Jailers.
In this region, these foes persistently pursue you, causing a gradual decrease in your vitality even when they’re simply within sight. This makes them both visually unnerving and challenging from a gameplay perspective.
If they approach you closely, it’s almost certain death as their grab is hard to foresee and nearly impossible to avoid.
Due to mechanisms such as the bow, you can single out enemies and fight them individually, but with numerous foes, it becomes impracticable to complete the Irythill Dungeon without significantly increasing your own casualty count.
7. Blowdart Sniper
An Inopportune Placement

Many adversaries in the Soulsborne series can be frustrating due to their surroundings, as demonstrated by the Frozen Reindeer in Dark Souls 2 and the archers of Anor Londo in Dark Souls.
On the other hand, the Blowdart Snipers in Dark Souls present a unique challenge. The environment’s rough terrain and poor visibility make the situation difficult, and what makes it worse is their seemingly flawless accuracy, never missing their targets.
If you don’t have a Blooming Purple Moss Clump to cure the Toxic status, going through Blighttown will be even more traumatic, so I highly recommend you bring some.
6. Lesser Runebear
Harder Than Many Major Bosses

It’s not uncommon to find that some common opponents can be more challenging than certain boss characters, but the Lesser Runebears in Elden Ring stand out as exceptions, even among these tougher types.
It’s true that they don’t possess the same strength as Malenia or Messmer, but here’s the twist: In regular gameplay areas, I don’t anticipate suddenly encountering an enemy on par with a boss.
These creatures are unpredictable, boast a large attack area, and inflict heavy damage, making them challenging adversaries to confront. It’s possible that FromSoftware showed thoughtfulness by transforming these enemies into formidable bosses in the game Shadow of the Erdtree.
Fortunately, you can use Torrent to engage with them, yet, their lines of charge stretch for miles, leaving no room for certainty when facing these pesky creatures.
5. Bonewheel Skeleton
Fast, Deadly, and Unpredictable

After all these years, I believe Dark Souls‘ Pinwheel is an easy boss because FromSoftware knows they went too far with the creation of the Bonewheel Skeletons.
As someone well-versed in hefty armor, an overpowered character build, and a longtime devotee of the Soulsborne series, I’m often left reeling by their swift, unpredictable onslaughts.
It’s certainly satisfying when you dodge them in a row with superhuman reflexes, but doing so is as difficult as it is unreliable.
Regardless of my actions, I’ll always feel a sense of apprehension about venturing into The Catacombs or the Painted World of Ariamis, knowing that a horde of skeletons might charge at me.
4. Imp
A Race of Irritating Beings

In Elden Ring, the Imp creatures are a blend of the Lesser Runebear’s raw power and erratic behavior, along with the Bonewheel Skeleton’s imposing stature and nimbleness.
As a devoted gamer, let me tell you, these creatures in the game are the epitome of aggravation. They’ve mastered the art of sneak attacks, evading nearly every strike I throw. They taunt me with projectiles launched from seemingly out-of-reach spots, and before I can even bat an eye, they inflict bleeding wounds on me.
As a gamer, I can tell you, Imps come in all shapes and sizes, but they’re all designed to be as frustrating as possible. From the pesky little ones with their annoying hatching sounds to the colossal ones that rain fireballs, they seem to always travel in packs and go the extra mile to make my gaming experience a living nightmare.
3. Revenant
The Ultimate Roll-catcher

As a dedicated gamer immersed in the world of Elden Ring, I must admit that its combat is nothing short of exceptional within the realm of open-world games. However, encountering those relentless Revenants can be so infuriating that it often leaves me contemplating whether to switch off my console entirely upon their appearance on screen.
These creatures move swiftly, produce harmful fogs, possess the ability to instantaneously transport, and attack in ways that even constant rolling cannot avoid; there’s no denying their evil nature.
Instead of relying on Healing Charms for swift defeat, be prepared for an unexpected challenge if your character lacks a Faith-based build and must engage in conventional close-combat.
In essence, the most effective strategy undoubtedly lies in retreating, given their scarcity in The Lands Between. Otherwise, they would effortlessly top our list.
2. Starved Hound
Dogs Are Not Anyone’s Best Friend

In Soulsborne games, dogs have often been a challenge, but the Starved Hounds in Dark Souls 3 stand out as particularly aggravating.
Apart from always appearing in Lothric, these entities seem to have a knack for appearing right behind you as if they can teleport, making it appear as though they are never far behind, regardless of how fast you run.
Although it might not have been a deliberate design choice on FromSoftware’s end, and despite my belief that Dark Souls 3 truly deserved Game of the Year in 2016, it’s hardly accidental that the game’s dogs are widely despised by many players.
As a gamer, let me tell you, these opponents aren’t worth slogging through my hard-earned victories nor are they simple enough to brush aside. They’ll claim your life whether you engage in battle or attempt to flee from them. In short, they’re among the most infuriating entities in this gaming world.
1. Winter Lantern
Generational Trauma

In Bloodborne, there are aspects I adore, but two elements really grind my gears: gathering vials and the Winter Lanterns (and the lack of a remake, but let’s save that topic for later).
Certainly, it’s clear that this adversary has been strategically placed to be frustrating and intimidating. Its purpose is to make players feel the authentic fear that permeates the world of Yharnam, amplifying its genuine horror.
With that thought in place, their performance is always chilling to me, especially when their eyes seem to radiate an eerie light and they prepare for their loathsome grasp assault.
It seems undeniable that the Winter Lanterns, given their ability to cause Frenzy, arguably the most exasperating status effect ever conceived by FromSoftware, make them the most aggravating mob adversary throughout the annals of the Soulsborne series.
