As a seasoned veteran of the Path of Exile realm, I must say that tackling Draven, the Eternal Praetor, was quite the challenge for this old dog. The battlefield was filled with necrotic energy, and his moves were reminiscent of a dance that required more patience than a cat on a hot tin roof!
In the initial stages of Path of Exile 2, players will come across Draven, the Everlasting Praetor, while on the quest titled “Sorrow Among Stones” during Act 1. Overcoming him is essential for progression as it allows you to finish the map and access Lachlann of Endless Lament who waits at the graveyard’s end.
For numerous gamers, Draven could be the initial challenging adversary they come across within the game, serving as their first sampling of the fresh direction taken by GGG in PoE 2. This is an Action Role-Playing Game (ARPG) that incorporates Soulslike combat, emphasizing strategic positioning, mastery of boss actions, and unwavering perseverance.
How to Beat Draven in PoE 2
Fighting against Draven can be quite challenging due to his habit of overwhelming the battlefield with numerous effects. The vastness of the arena doesn’t make it any easier as his moves are skillfully designed for area denial, limiting your movement. Ranged characters might find it less taxing to tackle Draven compared to melee characters, but mastering the boss fight mechanics is crucial for everyone, as it remains a tough battle regardless.
It’s worth upgrading your weapons and armor to prepare for this fight.
Draven Attack Pattern
Attack | Description |
---|---|
Basic Sword Combo | Draven swings his sword in a 4-hit combo. |
Necrotic Bolts | Draven swings his sword in a large arc, sending out bolts of necrotic energy in a large cone around him. |
Double Necrotic Bolts | Draven swings his sword in two quick arcs, creating two waves of Necrotic Bolts in a large cone around him. |
Necrotic Sword Wave | Draven creates two lines of necrotic energy by slamming his foot on the ground before swinging his sword down, sending both waves outward and dealing medium damage. |
Summon Minions | Draven creates ghostly hollows of his minions around the battle arena. If the player steps into one, an Eternal Knight will spawn to help Draven. |
Summon Asinia | Draven cries out, ‘Asinia!’, summoning a specter of a ghostly ally. Asinia creates three or four necrotic runic circles on the ground, which detonate after a brief delay, dealing medium damage. The last circle is larger in diameter than the first two. |
Draven Boss Strategy
As a gamer, I’ve found that mastering Draven requires a dash of patience and a good sense of positioning. His moves, once you know where to be, are quite avoidable. When he unleashes Necrotic Bolts or Double Necrotic Bolts, it’s best to dart behind him the moment he begins charging up the attack, or simply step back to create space and make dodging between the individual bolts a breeze.
In the game Path of Exile 2, Necrotic Sword Wave is an almost full-arena attack. The most secure spot to be is right by Draven’s side. Since this ability doesn’t have any iframes, it means you can’t dodge the damage once you’re caught within its radius. Therefore, your only choices are to move out of the way or use a blocking technique to minimize the harm.
Stuck in a rut? Why not reach out to a buddy for some backup? Let’s team up and warp straight to the boss together, making quick work of this challenge!
Avoiding the Summon Minions spell can be effortless; simply steer clear of the green spectral figures scattered across the arena, and you’re good to go! Keep in mind that there might be instances, such as when you’re collecting Power Charges for a potent attack, where intentionally activating the minion summon could be beneficial.
In summary, it’s essential to note that the Summon Asinia, during this fight, is frequently responsible for most deaths. The intricate runic circles crafted by Draven’s spouse can be challenging to evade in the midst of battle. However, the secret to circumventing them is straightforward: rather than dodging to avoid them, continue walking through them. A character’s walking pace outmatches the time it takes for the runes to detonate. Constantly pressing the dodge button is not a viable solution.
As a dedicated fan, I can say that, while each move seems manageable on its own, when combined, they create quite a challenge. Fortunately, after a few stumbles, it becomes clear how to read the pattern and dodge whatever tricks Draven brings my way.
Draven Boss Rewards
Following Draven’s defeat, he leaves behind the “Draven’s Memorial Key Fragment,” which is placed among his ordinary loot. To advance further in Sorrow Among Stones, you’ll need both this item and another one that Asinia, Draven’s wife, possesses. She can be found on the same map in a different tomb.
