As a seasoned gamer who’s been around since the days of 8-bit Marvel games, let me tell you, the roster of Marvel Rivals is nothing short of spectacular. From household names to slightly more obscure characters, this game has got it all – and even the most obscure characters have deep lore connections that are beautifully woven into the gameplay.
Just as any exceptional hero shooter ought to be, a key asset for Marvel Rivals lies in its diverse character lineup. At its debut, Marvel Rivals boasts 33 playable characters, many of whom are well-known figures from the Marvel universe, while others may not be as familiar. However, even the lesser-known characters in Marvel Rivals’ roster possess rich backstories that tie them to the rest of the cast, and one of the game’s most compelling features is the way these connections are brought to light.
In addition to conversations between heroes and villains before battles, Marvel Rivals boasts a variety of team-up moves inspired by the comics’ character relationships. For instance, Scarlet Witch and Magneto have a unique team-up move reflecting their longstanding familial bond in the comics. However, there’s an essential aspect of this family tie that’s absent from Marvel Rivals, and it needs to be addressed promptly.
Marvel Rivals Should Add One Part of Magneto’s Family Tree
Quicksilver’s Relationship to Magneto Explained
Initially introduced as orphans in the X-Men comic series Uncanny X-Men #4 back in 1964, Wanda Maximoff and her brother Pietro were raised by Magneto and his group of mutant villains known as the Brotherhood. However, it wasn’t until the 1980s that Magneto learned that his former lover, Magda, had given birth to twins before she escaped from Wundagore Mountain. Surprisingly, these twins turned out to be none other than Wanda and Pietro, which made Magneto their biological father.
For many years, the bond among the three characters was considered official in comic book lore. However, this changed when the AXIS crossover series took place in 2014. In this storyline, Scarlet Witch’s powers were used against her, and she cast a spell meant to injure her family members. Interestingly, only Quicksilver was affected by this spell, implying that Magneto might not be their biological father after all. Later on, it was officially revealed that the twins’ powers originated from the High Evolutionary’s experiments, rather than any mutant genetics belonging to Magneto.
As a devoted fan, I’ve found myself often reflecting on the intricate family ties within Marvel Comics. Despite Magneto not being Wanda or Pietro’s biological father in the established storyline, fans have been known to embrace their preferred interpretation of this relationship due to the ongoing revisions in the canon. While Marvel Rivals hasn’t officially confirmed whether Scarlet Witch and Magneto share a genetic bond, their collaborative move “Metallic Chaos” suggests a powerful connection between them. However, what Marvel Rivals fails to address is the integral aspect of the Maximoff/Eisenhardt triad.
Quicksilver Would Be a Great Addition to Marvel Rivals’ Roster
In the lineup of Marvel Rivals, there’s a fantastic blend of superpowers, yet it lacks a genuine speedster character. Quicksilver could potentially fill that gap. Mastering speedster gameplay wouldn’t be a walk in the park, but with NetEase’s track record of handling diverse ability sets, even those considered challenging to adapt within the hero shooter format, this seems like a feasible addition.
Marvel Rivals Could Use Another One of Magneto’s Children
Back in 1968, I came across a remarkable character named Lorna Dane, otherwise known as Polaris, in issue #49 of Uncanny X-Men. This Mutant possesses the astounding ability to control magnetic fields, much like Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. Yet, her relationship with Magneto is intricate, filled with twists and retcons that can leave your head spinning. Generally speaking, though, it’s acknowledged in most Marvel narratives that Polaris is Magneto’s biological daughter. Given the incredible lineup of characters in Marvel Rivals, I firmly believe she would make an excellent new addition to their roster!
It would be exciting to witness Polaris leverage her abilities much like her father in the game Marvel Rivals, given that it needs a few more characters with support roles. Polaris could emulate Overwatch’s Juno by manipulating magnetic fields to soar above the battlefield, offering protective shields and healing to her teammates.
