On December 11th, Nintendo made available Tetris and Tetris DX on both NES and Game Boy via their Nintendo Switch Online subscription service. These classic games were accompanied by a special video message from Tetris’ creator, Alexey Pajitnov, expressing gratitude to fans for their ongoing appreciation of the Tetris series.

First introduced on IBM computers within the Soviet Union back in 1985, the iconic game of Tetris eventually spread to global audiences in 1988, appearing on personal computers and arcade machines. A year following a court case with Atari Games, Nintendo distributed their versions of Tetris on NES and Game Boy systems across North America and Europe in 1989. Over time, numerous adaptations of Tetris have emerged on diverse platforms, but the version released for the NES remains a cherished classic due to its thrilling gameplay. In December of 2023, 13-year-old gamer Blue Scuti made history as the first player to reach level 157 and activate the “Kill screen,” an event that significantly impacted the legacy of the Tetris franchise.

Starting now, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can enjoy two classic editions of the legendary Tetris franchise. The original 1989 NES version of Tetris and the 1998 Game Boy Color game, Tetris DX, are now accessible via the NES and Game Boy apps on Nintendo Switch Online. This exciting news was shared in a video by both Nintendo and the creator of Tetris, Pajitnov. Pajitnov highlighted that 2024 will mark 40 years since the creation of Tetris, and he mentioned that the current availability of Tetris on the NSO NES app is the first time it has been accessible since 1989. In addition, Tetris DX, an upgraded version based on the iconic Game Boy Tetris, was launched on the NSO Game Boy app in February 2023. Notably, Tetris DX includes a two-player versus mode, but each participant will require their own NSO subscription to engage in multiplayer matches.
