Games That Need Another Remake

Summary

  • Star Fox 64 needs a remake with expanded content, co-op missions, and split-screen multiplayer on newer consoles.
  • Warcraft 3: Reforged’s mixed reception suggests a new installment with expanded lore could be better received by fans.
  • Secret of Mana HD could have achieved a more polished art direction like the original.

As a lifelong gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the magical worlds of these classic games, I can confidently say that it’s high time for some much-deserved updates!

Over the past few years, I’ve noticed that some of my all-time favorite games are getting reimagined or updated. It’s awesome because it means I can revisit these classics on newer platforms, and while some games like Street Fighter just needed a modern refresh, others like Final Fantasy 7 Remake have taken remakes to an entirely new level, offering fresh experiences that feel both nostalgic and innovative at the same time.

There are certain TV shows that could benefit from being revamped, and unfortunately, some of the remakes we’ve seen haven’t met our hopes. Here are a few titles that could use a fresh take, potentially rejuvenating them in an exciting way.

8. Ape Escape: On The Loose

Recreate The Capture Madness

The unique charm that set the original Ape Escape apart was its whimsical concept of capturing apes using an array of unusual devices. However, when On the Loose, a PSP remake, came out, it reduced the player’s access to these gadgets, which in turn affected the smoothness of the original gameplay experience. Although both the original and the remake have their merits, it’s worth considering a new Ape Escape remake to restore the full potential of the original gameplay.

2010 marked the release of the final part in this series, which featured relatively limited content. A remake of the original game focusing on additional gadgets and complexities would be highly beneficial. The quirky appeal remains intact, and modern consoles could breathe fresh life into the series by introducing new multiplayer options, challenges, and a zany narrative.

7. Star Fox 64 3D

Evolve The Classic Space Rail Shooter

Star Fox is primarily featured in the Super Smash Bros. series today, but there haven’t been any significant reboots or successful spin-offs that truly capture the brilliance of the original Star Fox and Star Fox 64 games. Although the 3DS remake of Star Fox 64 enhanced its visuals and audio, it didn’t add much to the gameplay content or introduce fresh mechanics compared to the original versions.

A faithful reboot of the classic game “Star Fox 64” could breathe new life into the series. Bypassing “Star Fox Zero“, Fox and his comrades could star in an extended storyline, not just offering improved graphics, but also reviving split-screen multiplayer for cooperative missions or player versus player action. Modern gaming systems could rejuvenate the rail shooter style gameplay that “Star Fox” originally offered, transforming it into something innovative.

6. Warcraft 3: Reforged

Adapting New Lore To The Same Format

Initially, Warcraft 3: Reforged received criticism upon release for numerous technical problems, absent multiplayer features as promised, and lacking enhancements over the original version. This is likely because Blizzard was undergoing layoffs during that time, and they had to rush the game out quickly to meet a tight deadline.

Regardless of the varied responses, the fact that it generated attention could indicate that gamers are eager for more from the Warcraft series. Instead of rushing a sequel or remake, perhaps a better approach would be to invest in a complete overhaul of one of the original games. This refurbished version could offer developers an opportunity to delve deeper into the new lore presented in The War Within.

5. Secret Of Mana

Reimagining An SNES Gem

High-Definition Version of Mana refers to an upgraded version of the 1993 SNES game, Secret of Mana. Despite featuring the same mechanics as the original, it carries a lower production value with occasional glitches and a modest art design. The incorporation of voice acting was a commendable enhancement, though the characters’ mouths do not synchronize with their dialogue.

The remake successfully captured the same vivid colors and narrative as the original, yet it might benefit from a more impactful and refined artistic vision. Additionally, it could benefit from an upgrade to its real-time combat system to match the evolving standards of real-time RPG battles, similar to how Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth did.

4. GoldenEye 007

Refresh What Works

The game titled “GoldenEye 007” received revamps for the DS and Wii systems, yet neither reached the same degree of popularity as the original version. However, they still showcased captivating settings from the movie. Regrettably, the DS edition grappled with movement and visual aspects, and in general, the remakes didn’t seem contemporary enough for their respective eras.

Despite the fact that GoldenEye 007 comes with a remaster in the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack, it would benefit from a more contemporary reimagining. The original game’s movement and shooting mechanics are smooth as they are, but a remake could maintain its successes while incorporating a fresh art style that doesn’t adhere to the stereotypical gritty aesthetic of the 2010s.

3. Chrono Cross

A Timeless RPG That Deserves More

As a dedicated fan, I’ve been thrilled with the Radical Dreamers Edition that brought the original Chrono Cross to modern TVs. However, Chrono Cross deserves more than just an update; it needs a complete overhaul to breathe new life into its captivating story and art style for future generations. Despite its age, Chrono Cross remains a timeless masterpiece that continues to engage players today. That’s why I believe a remake should reimagine this classic game, offering a fresh take on the beloved Chrono Cross experience.

Fans initially anticipated a sequel titled “Chrono Trigger 2“, but eventually found themselves captivated by “Chrono Cross“, despite it feeling somewhat incomplete. A complete remake could strengthen its bond with the series, delve deeper into the Dream Devourer/Time Devourer mythology, or even introduce a fresh chapter within the “Chrono” series.

2. Final Fantasy 8

An Actual Recreation

Final Fantasy 7 Remake proved to be an outstanding revival of a game born from passion and dedication, and I believe that similar treatment could greatly enhance Final Fantasy 8. The remastered version of FF8 seemed more like a simple update for the newer consoles rather than a full overhaul, retaining outdated animations and mechanics.>

Redesigning Final Fantasy 8 might entail adopting the enhanced battle system from the remakes of Final Fantasy 7, along with updated graphics. A remake could potentially reinterpret the narrative in a fresh way, similar to how Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth did by revisiting their original stories.

1. Pokemon Red, Blue, & Yellow

A More Dedicated And Updated Rendition

The Nintendo Switch game titled “Pokemon Let’s Go!” was one of its top sellers, yet it seemed more like an expansion of the mobile game “Pokemon Go.” Similar to how “Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen” revisited the stories from “Pokemon Blue” and “Red,” “Pokemon Let’s Go!” follows the narrative and world originally presented in “Pokemon Yellow,” updated for modern play.

The largest downside to the Pokemon Go playstyle is how easy the game is, with XP gained for all party Pokemon from catching wild Pokemon and battling. The original Pokemon Yellow, Red, and Blue could use a more challenging recreation, and possibly additional content similar to what Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire did with the Delta Episode.
