As a longtime Star Trek fan who has seen more than my fair share of alternate realities and parallel universes, I must say that the latest revelation about T’Pol and Trip’s lifelong marriage in Star Trek: Lower Decks has left me both amazed and amused. It’s not every day that we get to see a character like T’Pol, who was once cold and emotionless, thriving in a long-term relationship with the ever-cheerful Commander Tucker.

Star Trek has long provided its audience with a series of heartbreaking romances. Characters like Captain James T. Kirk and Edith Keeler, Jadzia Dax and Worf, Kira Nerys and Vedek Bareil, Michael Burnham and Ash Tyler, and Subcommander T’Pol and Commander Charles “Trip” Tucker have all faced numerous hardships in their relationships. This week on Star Trek: Lower Decks, fans can explore what might have been instead of the many tragedies they experienced in the Prime Universe.

The romantic journey between Trip and T’Pol, an unforeseen pairing, unfolded in the vein of the “enemies-to-lovers” trope across Star Trek: Enterprise‘s four seasons. In the last season, they confessed their feelings for each other, but their happiness was short-lived when they discovered their DNA had been misused to produce a Vulcan/Human hybrid child. Sadly, the baby lived only a few days before passing away. Overwhelmed by grief, T’Pol and Trip separated. Six years later, in the series finale, they rekindled their connection for a brief moment, but their potential reunion was cut short as the mission turned perilous. Ultimately, Trip sacrificed himself to save Captain Jonathan Archer and the rest of the crew.

Despite the sad conclusion of Trip and T’Pol’s romance in the main universe, Star Trek enthusiasts understand that countless versions of Trip and T’Pol exist across the vast multiverses. In the second-to-last episode of Lower Decks, “Fissure Quest,” William Boimler commands a crew comprising characters from various multiverses, and his first officer is an alternate version of T’Pol. As viewers get to know this alternate T’Pol, they soon realize that her relationship with Trip unfolded quite differently in this universe.

A Happy Ending

As Captain Boimler, the guy who’s supposedly deceased but ended up joining Section 31, I present my team of diverse counterparts from across the multiverse. One of them is T’Pol, who’s been a master in understanding human emotions after spending decades married to none other than Trip Tucker.

In the world she created, T’Pol and Trip didn’t only find their blissful ending; instead, they continued to be together for what seems like the remainder of Trip’s lifespan! The past tense T’Pol used when speaking with Dax suggests that they are no longer married, but if we imagine an alternate Trip was in his twenties during their first meeting, similar to how it was in the Prime Universe, then their marriage likely didn’t conclude in a divorce, instead ending with Trip’s passing after a long and joyful life.

It’s quite amusing how, despite T’Pol’s struggle with understanding and managing emotions in Star Trek: Enterprise due to her Vulcan nature, her marriage to Trip has made her an expert on human emotions – a surprising turn in her character. After sixty years of matrimony, even a Vulcan can learn!

The Return of Jolene Blalock

Indeed, T’Pol’s reappearance in the series signifies that actress Jolene Blalock is back in the Star Trek universe once more. Among the long-standing Star Trek cast members, Blalock was not typically expected to make a comeback to the franchise.

In discussions for the book “The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 Years“, both Jolene Blalock and showrunner Brannon Braga openly discussed problems Blalock had with her character’s portrayal in Enterprise. She desired T’Pol to be more authentically Vulcan and less focused on awkward romantic tension. As per Braga, she also disliked the relationship between T’Pol and Trip, making an alternate T’Pol’s narrative all the more surprising. Given her issues with the series, it was questionable if Blalock would be open to reprising the role of T’Pol.

Besides this recent appearance, she has effectively stepped away from her acting career. Prior to this, there were no films or TV series featuring her since the year 2017.

Blalock’s return was a wonderful surprise, especially because her role in Lower Decks gave her the opportunity to play a different kind of T’Pol. In just one, half-hour episode, Blalock got to show more of T’Pol’s depth and nuance than she did in most of her run on Enterprise.

Additionally, the installment featured a number of beloved Star Trek characters such as Elim Garak, Julian Bashir, Harry Kim, and Lily Sloan.

The last installment of “Star Trek: Lower Decks” will be available on Paramount+ a week from now, specifically on Thursday, the 19th of December.
