At The Game Awards held in Los Angeles, CDPR unveiled The Witcher 4, treating fans who’ve eagerly anticipated the next chapter of the monster-hunting saga for nearly a decade with an extended CGI video preview.
As I gaze upon the thrilling trailer unfolding before me, it’s clear that Ciri takes center stage – a young woman who’s not just any ordinary ward to Geralt of Rivia, but the very heart of the upcoming game. In a recent chat with CD Projekt Red, they shared their rationale behind placing Ciri at the helm of this single-player adventure. They emphasized that the narrative has always been about her, underscoring her pivotal role in this epic tale.
‘An Amazing, Layered Character’
In a chat with IGN, the executive producer of The Witcher 4, Małgorzata Mitręga, shared the reason behind Ciri being the lead character in this monumental game project by CDPR, one of their most daring endeavors yet.
From the very beginning of Saga, she has been the central figure in the story, as vividly portrayed in the books. She’s a complex and captivating character that has left an indelible mark on all who encounter her. Since we bid farewell to Geralt before, this can be seen as a continuation of her journey. For many, it feels as if she was destined for this role – she is undeniably the one. In essence, she embodies what we’ve come to know and expect from her.
The director of The Witcher 4, Sebastian Kalemba, expanded on that:
She’s actually about to become the Witcher.

It was made clear that she had been planned to be the central character all along in The Witcher 4. In Blood and Wine, the final expansion of The Witcher 3, Geralt of Rivia essentially retired.
