As a seasoned anime enthusiast who’s seen it all, from the sublime to the ridiculous, I must say that this week’s Dandadan episode was a rollercoaster ride of emotions. The chaotic energy that permeated every frame felt like a whirlwind, reminiscent of my own life sometimes.
heads up: What I’m about to discuss includes tiny hints from Dandadan’s eleventh episode titled “First Love,” currently available on Crunchyroll.
Over the past few weeks, watching Dandadan has stirred up various feelings, yet this episode left me utterly puzzled upon its conclusion. As we approach the final episode, one might anticipate an intriguing cliffhanger; however, it all seemed to happen at lightning speed, leaving me bewildered while simultaneously eliciting intense emotions through its peculiarity.
Earlier, Okarun, Momo, and Aira found themselves puzzled over their unexpected nakedness at school, all while pondering why aliens have been showing such intense interest in them. Simultaneously, Okarun and Momo resolved old disagreements, only for a new confusion to arise when Jiji, Momo’s childhood friend and first love, unexpectedly entered the scene.
Jiji Is… A Lot to Deal With
Initially, when Aira debuted, many fans anticipated that people would dislike her. However, following some emotionally intense and sincere scenes, opinions quickly changed. Now, with only one episode left this season, it seems an enormous task, almost Herculean, to achieve a similar change in public perception for the character Jiji. To put it bluntly, Jiji’s current portrayal is quite cringeworthy.
Given the difficulty with picking up sarcasm through the written word, let it be known that this is mostly sarcastic, but it’s also not out of the realm of possibility that this was the intended reaction. In which case, masterful work. Despite his composed and handsome appearance at first, he quickly breaks the facade to reveal that he is dumb. Momo is immediately reminded why she doesn’t love him anymore, Okarun is puzzled, and – most hilariously – so is Aira.
It’s quite amusing how she was outsmarted in her own domain, given that she’s usually the one causing the mischief. The Ayase household can only handle so much turmoil, yet Jiji shows a more serious side to him. He’s moved in with Momo because his parents are in the hospital. He admits he used to bully Momo and now asks for her help, as he claims he can now see ghosts and that one of them is causing his parents’ illness.
It’s Okarun’s Turn for a Misunderstanding
In this episode, what’s nearly as annoying as dealing with Jiji is the fact that Okarun thought Momo might choose Jiji over him, even for a moment. This plot point serves as a source of comedy, similar to the confusion between Okarun and Aira in previous instances, but it feels repetitive here. Despite this, it’s challenging to stay angry because – as previously mentioned – the episode progresses at an incredible pace.
As soon as Okarun’s mind begins to fear the worst, it seems like the universe responds by presenting him with another bizarre supernatural event to shake him out of his worries. An enormous anatomical model of a human body is not just moving, but it’s running like a man on a mission. Momo believes that Okarun’s second lost ball has been found by this model, which means another fast-paced chase, and this time with Jiji tagging along.
Is This Dandadan’s Most Unhinged Episode?
This week, I found myself utterly captivated by the peculiar charm of “Dandadan”. It was a rollercoaster ride of humor, mystery, and sometimes, a delightful blend of both. The character of Jiji seems to embody a playful satire of the quintessential childhood best friend persona, yet manages to feel strangely alien compared to every extraterrestrial being portrayed so far. The serendipitous choice of Aleks Le for the English dub role feels like destiny. As a connoisseur of voice acting, I can attest that Aleks has poured his talent into embodying the memes of each character he’s voiced before, leaving nothing unexplored, and I can only express gratitude for such an entertaining performance.
Unfortunately, it didn’t take long for his appeal to fade. He can be quite irritating, and if he continues to behave this way for several seasons, that’s a serious concern. Thankfully, the show has a reputation for developing characters well, so there’s hope. Let’s also not forget that the animation complements the chaos nicely.
The Animation is Appropriately “Off”
In this specific installment, I can’t help but notice the deliberate approach taken in the animation quality of “Dandadan.” Each episode seems to have a unique aesthetic, with Episode 1 standing out distinctly from Episode 7, and so forth. The subtle yet significant differences in character movements and expressions are skillfully employed to align with each chapter’s narrative.
When Aira darts out of Momo’s house, it’s nearly impossible not to erupt in laughter. The sudden speed and slightly awkward appearance make the humor even funnier. Meanwhile, Jiji moves around so energetically that he captures your attention instantly. Pausing is like spinning a roulette wheel – you’ll always discover a fresh, amusing expression for a profile picture.
Dandadan‘s latest episode was decent enough, but not particularly outstanding, which is somewhat disheartening given the penultimate episode’s promise, though it doesn’t raise any major concerns about the final episode. The humor was robust, the animation was appropriately chaotic to complement it, and it was a swiftly paced journey overall. However, what stood out as peculiar was how something so conceptually complex left me feeling somewhat let down.
