Summary
- 28 Days Later is not available for rent, purchase, or digital viewing.
- The sequel, 28 Weeks Later, is accessible on streaming services.
- Failure to release 28 Days Later for streaming is a missed opportunity, especially for those too young to have seen the original on the big screen before the next installment.
As someone who grew up watching horror movies and considers “28 Days Later” as one of the most impactful entries in the genre, I can’t help but feel disappointed that the first film of this groundbreaking trilogy is nowhere to be found on streaming platforms. Having experienced the terror and suspense of the original when it was first released, I understand the significance of its absence for those who are eagerly awaiting the upcoming “28 Years Later.
Excitedly, I can’t help but be drawn back to the origins of one of the most chilling horror series in cinematic history as we gear up for the next chapter in this gripping trilogy. It’s only natural that fans would yearn to revisit the film that sparked it all, and when I say “revisiting,” I mean diving headfirst into a timeless tale that transcends the 28 Days Later saga. This isn’t merely a new phase in the zombie movie genre; it’s the dawn of an innovative era, where terrifying creatures born from nightmares challenge our perceptions and outdo the slow-moving undead that we were accustomed to before its groundbreaking debut.
Before fans even caught a glimpse of the third movie in the 28 Years Later trilogy, the original film continues to captivate zombie and horror enthusiasts due to its unique approach on a genre that’s often revisited. With the trailer for what appears to be the final installment now out, fans might want to refresh their memory about the characters and plotlines from the first two movies that made them so engaging. However, there’s an issue: while the creators of 28 Years Later have been skillful in releasing teasers, photos, and finally a trailer, they overlooked one crucial detail. They forgot to ensure that viewers could easily find and watch the first film if they wished. In 2024, it’s regrettably more challenging than it should be to do so.
28 Days Later Not On Streaming Is Missed Opportunity
As it stands, you won’t find “28 Days Later” streaming anywhere at present. This is surprising given the situation, as it appears that this absence might be an oversight of significant proportions. The film isn’t accessible through free streaming or subscription services either, and unfortunately, there’s no option to rent or purchase it digitally for now.
A query on the widely-used database platform, JustWatch, reveals that the film featuring Cillian Murphy is nowhere to be found for rent, purchase, or streaming with a fee on any platform. In other words, it’s mysteriously absent from all services, and searches on marketplaces like Amazon Prime and Apple TV Store yield only movies resembling it.
It’s quite likely that there are multiple factors preventing the Alex Garland film from being available, and it might be more intricate than people assume due to its age and lack of 4K release. This could be why both streaming services and physical media outlets (such as DVDs and Blu-rays) have yet to offer it.
It appears that the rights issues might be causing complications, and it seems surprising that such matters weren’t resolved before the first trailer for “28 Years Later” was unveiled. This situation somewhat mirrors when the “Fallout” series debuted on Amazon Prime, with no new game releases at launch (although some were available a few weeks later). Given that the new movie is set to release in six months, it would have been an excellent opportunity to capitalize on this by re-releasing “28 Days Later” for rental or purchase at the very least.
There’s Still One Movie To Brush Up On
It’s rather unexpected that the original film, 28 Days Later, can’t be found on streaming platforms or in a fresh physical copy, given that its sequel, 28 Weeks Later, is easily accessible. The sequel carries an optimistic tone, suggesting that the virus can be survived and England is poised for reconstruction. Interestingly, it also highlights how effortlessly the outbreak could be rekindled.
The sequel can be found on Paramount+ and Hulu, or rented/bought from your preferred digital store. Given that “28 Days Later” is over 20 years old now, some viewers who haven’t seen the original might find themselves confused if they jump straight into “28 Weeks Later”.

Starring | Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston, Megan Burns, Brendan Gleeson |
That is genuinely the oddest part about the people behind 28 Years Later not making sure the first film in the trilogy is easily accessible, even if it isn’t in the best shape as far as video quality compared to what people expect with everything being 4K. The series is old enough that it’s not just about walking down memory lane. It’s about finding out what the first installment was all about. Imagine if a new Nightmare on Elm Street movie was released and there was no way to watch the original. Freddy would never.
