2025 is a Big Year for Obsidian Entertainment

As a die-hard fan of Obsidian Entertainment, I can hardly contain my excitement for the year 2025! With the upcoming releases of not one, but TWO epic RPGs from this brilliant studio, it’s like Christmas and my birthday rolled into one intergalactic adventure.

The long-awaited debut of Obsidian Entertainment’s game, Avowed, is almost here, but despite the excitement, the team hasn’t been idle. They’ve been working on other projects too, one of which had an unexpected unveiling at The Game Awards 2024. With one of the funniest trailers of the night, Obsidian Entertainment announced that The Outer Worlds 2, a game that had only been rumored until then, will be released towards the end of 2025. Alongside the upcoming launch of Avowed and the late-2025 release of The Outer Wilds 2, Obsidian Entertainment is gearing up for a bustling 2025, with two significant releases marking the start and end of the year.

It’s an electrifying period for both Obsidian Entertainment and their enthusiasts, as the studio has earned a robust reputation in writing and quest design, thanks to its extensive and diverse collection of works. The initial release of Outer Worlds, a game that resonated with both critics and players due to its dark humor and captivating science fiction aspects reminiscent of Obsidian’s Fallout: New Vegas, was well-received. The trailer for the sequel hints at another engaging adventure for players, much like the original game. Alongside Avowed, which has already garnered positive feedback from its preview build, The Outer Worlds 2 could make 2025 a standout year for Obsidian.

Avowed Starts Off 2025 With a Bang for Obsidian

Originally slated for a 2024 debut, I’ve eagerly anticipated Obsidian’s Avowed. However, it faced a series of setbacks, eventually settling on its new release date: February 18, 2025. This launch period is quite crowded, boasting titles such as Monster Hunter Wilds, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Civilization 7, and Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. Yet, what sets Avowed apart is the unique writing, quest design, and immersive RPG mechanics that Obsidian is renowned for. If the early reviews are any indication, it’s gearing up to be one of the most compelling role-playing experiences in a while.

With the debut of “Avowed”, Obsidian Entertainment will be launching their first game since the critically praised historical adventure title “Pentiment” in 2022. Interestingly, “Pentiment” was released on the cusp of Obsidian’s 20th anniversary (the studio was established in 2003), and “Avowed” takes them back to the same world as their “Pillars of Eternity” series. Essentially, the arrival of “Avowed” can be seen as a sort of homecoming for Obsidian, and its position as one of the year’s early major AAA releases suggests that the studio may have a promising 2025 ahead.

The Outer Worlds 2 Stands to Be Obsidian’s Victory Lap for 2025

For a while now, we’ve known when Avowed is coming out, but the release date for The Outer Worlds 2 was something of a mystery. The original Outer Worlds, released in 2020, was a moderately successful RPG that drew upon many gameplay aspects and tone similar to Obsidian’s work on Fallout: New Vegas, but set in a sci-fi universe. Rumors about The Outer Worlds 2 had been circulating, but it wasn’t until The Game Awards 2024 that the sequel was officially announced, setting its release for “late 2025”.

Following the launch of “Avowed” in 2025, it seems that Obsidian Entertainment will wrap up the year with “The Outer Worlds 2”. This could mean they are set to release not just one but two highly successful role-playing games in a single year. Essentially, this appears to be a triumphant lap for Obsidian, a studio that has experienced its share of highs and lows over its 22-year existence, yet has managed to establish a unique niche within the RPG genre with a dedicated fanbase. In an era where major studios like Bethesda and CD Projekt RED are still years away from releasing their next RPGs, Obsidian’s back-to-back releases of “Avowed” and “The Outer Worlds 2” in 2025 couldn’t be more strategically timed.
