Summary
- Elden Ring: Nightreign allows solo play or groups of three only, no duo option available.
- The restriction is for game balancing reasons.
- Elden Ring fans are likely going to be disappointed to learn this.
As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent delving into the dark and intricate worlds of FromSoftware, I must admit that I was initially thrilled at the prospect of Elden Ring: Nightreign. However, upon learning that the co-op game can only be played solo or in groups of three, my excitement has waned significantly.
It has been verified that the forthcoming “Elden Ring: Nightreign” cooperative game only supports solo play or team-ups of three players; pairs are not an option. The reveal of “Elden Ring: Nightreign” was one of the most surprising moments at The Game Awards 2024. This cooperative spin-off of “Elden Ring”, titled “Nightreign”, is expected to be released sometime in 2025.
As a thrilled fan, I eagerly watched the Elden Ring: Nightreign reveal trailer, marveling at the glimpses of its enemies and fresh features. However, what left me yearning for more was the scant information that failed to paint a clear picture of the game’s narrative. Fortunately, additional details have surfaced, shedding light on Elden Ring: Nightreign being quite different from the original. Instead of an expansive open-world adventure, it appears to be a roguelite spin-off, offering eight unique characters to play and eight formidable bosses to conquer. What’s more intriguing is its structured design, featuring a three-day cycle that invites multiple attempts, adding layers of challenge and replayability.
The response from Elden Ring fans has been varied, to put it mildly. Unfortunately, there’s more news that may disappoint Nightreign fans regarding the game’s cooperative play. In an interview with IGN, Nightreign’s game director Junya Ishizaki revealed a limitation in the co-op mode. Contrary to expectations, Elden Ring: Nightreign does not support two players teaming up as a duo; instead, it only allows for solo play or group play with up to three players.
Elden Ring: Nightreign – How Many Players?
- Elden Ring: Nightreign can be played solo or in a group of three.
IGN questioned Ishizaki about why three was the “key number” for Elden Ring: Nightreign, and he mentioned that it was mainly a matter of game balance rather than design. He considered three players as the optimal number without making the game too chaotic or overpowering. However, it’s puzzling as to why the same logic doesn’t apply to duos. It remains uncertain how this information will affect Elden Ring enthusiasts, particularly since they are still waiting for clarification on how matchmaking will be implemented in the game.
In a similar vein to Elden Ring: Nightreign, there have been other games that implemented the challenging restriction for cooperative play, such as The Legend of Zelda: Tri-Force Heroes. This game allowed for only three-player co-op or single player mode, which was met with disapproval by Zelda fans. Similarly, Elden Ring enthusiasts may find this limitation just as frustrating.
Even though Elden Ring: Nightreign hasn’t been released yet, we can trust FromSoftware’s reputation. It’d be wiser to hold off on forming opinions until after playing the game. They’ve announced that a network test will happen before launch, but we don’t have an exact date just yet. Registration for this network test opens on January 10, so keep an eye out for additional information!
