Summary
- The Switch 2 will reportedly be 270 x 116 x 14mm in size.
- Without the Joy-Cons, the console is still rumored to be 200mm wide, 24mm longer than the Switch OLED Model.
- The Switch 2 may feature an 8-inch screen.
As a lifelong Nintendo enthusiast who’s been through the evolution of their consoles, I must say the rumors about the Switch 2 have me intrigued and slightly concerned. The reported size is significantly larger than its predecessor, which might make it a bit bulky for my small hands during those intense Mario Kart sessions.
There are rumors circulating about potential new features for the Switch 2, which are said to have been revealed by a consumer electronics accessory producer online. The latest information suggests that the next Nintendo gaming system is expected to be noticeably bigger compared to its predecessor, the Switch.
There’s strong speculation that Nintendo has begun mass production of the Switch 2 towards the end of 2024, despite them not yet confirming it officially. This assumption is bolstered by an increase in online listings for unofficial accessories supposedly tailored to the console’s leaked dimensions. In the consumer electronics market, especially with smartphones, it’s common for device dimensions to be revealed through third-party accessory designs before official announcements are made.
In one of the most recent examples of this trend, accessory maker Dbrand recently shared a render of its first-ever Switch 2 case, which it plans to begin selling in the near future. Elaborating on this move in a statement to The Verge, Dbrand CEO Adam Ijaz said that the newly shared product design wasn’t based on guesswork but the precise dimensions of the next Nintendo console, which the Canadian company obtained through a “3D scan of the real hardware.” Asked about what those proportions are, Ijaz said the Switch 2 will be 270 x 116 x 14mm in size with the Joy-Cons attached.
Switch 2 Will Reportedly Be Much Larger Than Nintendo’s Last Console
The executive confirmed that even without its detachable controllers, the new console will maintain a width of 200mm, making it 24mm longer than the Switch OLED Model. This prediction aligns with earlier speculations by accessory makers like Dbrand, who hinted at a larger physical size for the upcoming console compared to its predecessor, based on online listings for accessories such as a carrying case and tempered glass protector that were posted in early December 2024.
Size Comparison of Nintendo Switch Models
Switch | Switch Lite | Switch OLED | Switch 2 (Rumored) | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Width (w/o Joy-Cons) | 173 mm | N/A | 176 mm | 200 mm |
Width (w/ Joy-Cons) | 238 mm | 208 mm | 242 mm | 270 mm |
Height | 102 mm | 91 mm | 102 mm | 116 mm |
Depth | 14 mm | 14 mm | 13.9 mm | 14 mm |
Screen | 6.2″ | 5.5″ | 7″ | 8″ |
If the new console is indeed bigger than the Switch OLED Model, it’s expected to have a larger screen as well. Preliminary predictions from analysts in early 2024 hint that the Switch 2 might boast an 8-inch display, keeping with the 16:9 aspect ratio common across Nintendo’s current devices. Additionally, whispers from rumor mills indicate that the Switch 2 dock could be larger than the original one released in 2017, possibly for added stability considering the device’s bigger dimensions.
Nintendo has made it clear on two occasions that they plan to unveil their next-gen console (Switch successor) within the current fiscal year, which concludes on March 31, 2025. It’s unlikely the new gaming system will be available before mid-year 2025 at the absolute latest.
