As a long-time fan and follower of PlatinumGames, I find myself at a crossroads of emotions as the latest news unfolds. The departure of Hideki Kamiya, one of the founding members, was a hard blow to swallow. But now, it seems like the exodus doesn’t stop there, with several high-level developers and staff members seemingly leaving the studio last month.
It’s been rumored that some key developers and employees have recently departed from PlatinumGames, a renowned studio for its action game titles. Their latest release, “Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon,” hit the shelves in 2023.
2023 saw many avid gamers taken aback when Hideki Kamiya, a cornerstone of PlatinumGames for 15 years, unexpectedly announced his departure towards the year’s end. Notably, Kamiya was among the original creators of the studio alongside Shinji Mikami, Atsushi Inaba, and Tatsuya Minami. It appears that Hideki Kamiya isn’t alone in leaving Platinum Games, as it seems other developers have also parted ways with the company over the past month.
On the r/PlatinumGamesInc subreddit, as mentioned by PlatinumGamesFanboy, several long-time employees at the studio have made some alterations to their social media accounts. Particularly notable are Kenji Saito, Takahisa Taura, Masaki Yamanaka, and Abebe Tinari. These individuals have eliminated any reference to PlatinumGames from their Twitter usernames. For instance, Kenji Saito, who previously listed “PlatinumGames” as his location on Twitter, has now left that field blank. Moreover, Director Abebe Tinari, responsible for Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, recently announced that he is no longer residing in Japan.
High-Level Platinum Games Developers May Have Left Last Month
I haven’t had a reason to update my profile text for several years now…although it’s only one word, this is a big one!— Abebe Tinari (@tinari.bsky.social)2024-12-13T19:01:04.165Z
Each team member involved in key projects at PlatinumGames contributed to their most celebrated games. Saito led the development of both Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and Transformers: Devastation, Taura was the mastermind behind Astral Chain from 2019, while Yamanaka designed and directed Anarchy Reigns as a former PlatinumGames staff member. JP Kellams, who used to work at PlatinumGames, recently shared on Twitter his thoughts on the studio’s current state, expressing that sometimes Platinum’s brilliance dims, and hinted that many of his former colleagues may no longer be with the company. At present, there has been no formal confirmation about these departures, so this information should be taken as speculation and unverified rumors for now.
Kamiya shared that he parted ways with PlatinumGames because the company’s trajectory didn’t align with his perspective as a developer. After leaving PlatinumGames and a year-long break from creating new games, Kamiya unveiled Clovers, his latest venture under Capcom. Kamiya’s debut project after Platinum was revealed at The Game Awards 2024 – a much-anticipated sequel to Okami, with several former members of Clover Studio joining him in its creation.
