Summary
- GameStop is currently undergoing a comprehensive review meant to identify new locations for closure.
- The company anticipates this process could result in even more closures than those carried out “in the past few years.”
- GameStop closed over 700 stores since 2020.
As a long-time gamer and loyal patron of GameStop, I must admit I am both saddened and concerned by the company’s recent announcement regarding potential store closures. Over the years, countless trips to my local GameStop have provided me with countless hours of gaming joy, from purchasing new releases to trading in old games for credit towards newer ones.
It is likely that GameStop will continue shuttering stores in the coming period, as suggested in a recent official document. The details regarding this cost-reduction strategy are still under discussion; however, if these closures occur, they may exceed the number of stores closed by the company in recent years.
Similar to numerous other video game stores, GameStop faced difficulties with its physical stores due to the digital era’s growth. In order to counteract decreasing sales, the company has been striving to transform and venture into different sectors, such as NFTs and trading card appraisal. Despite none of these ventures having yielded success so far, GameStop’s latest consolidated financial report for Q3 2024 surprisingly showed a profit of $17.4 million.
Although GameStop’s positive performance during its latest quarter took analysts by surprise, this outcome might not suggest an improvement in the company’s situation. In fact, the retailer has announced plans for additional store closures, as indicated in a SEC filing dated December 10th. The recent Form 10-Q disclosure suggests that GameStop has initiated a thorough examination of its stores to pinpoint locations for closure, aiming to potentially shut down more stores than it has in the past few years. This ongoing review may lead to a higher number of store closures compared to recent years.
GameStop’s SEC Filing Hints at Hundreds of Store Closures
In March 2024, GameStop disclosed that it had shut down 287 stores in the U.S. and abroad during the preceding year. Interestingly, the company had also closed over 100 U.S. outlets in both 2022 and 2021. For fiscal year 2020, they announced the closure of more than 400 stores globally. By hinting that their ongoing review of store portfolios might result in even more shutdowns than those from recent years, GameStop seems to be indicating a potential for hundreds of additional closures in the coming period.
During the course of this ongoing assessment, we expect the possibility of a greater number of store closures than we’ve seen in recent years. It’s important to note that specific stores haven’t been pinpointed yet.
GameStop Still Operates Thousands of Stores the World Over
Despite making significant cost reductions, GameStop continues to maintain over 4,000 brick-and-mortar stores globally. However, based on its most recent SEC filing, there’s a possibility that this might change dramatically in the near future. Besides potential closures within the U.S., GameStop has also been scaling back its international presence. Most recently, it announced its departure from Germany. Previously, the company had already closed shop in Austria, Switzerland, and Ireland by 2023. Its Italian branch has also been shrinking in recent times.
Despite the surprising Q3 2024 profit indicating that GameStop’s cost-reduction efforts are effective, there will come a time when there won’t be any more stores to shut down or costs to minimize. To ensure longevity, it’s crucial for GameStop to explore new income sources before reaching this point. The retailer’s recent moves into retro games, NFTs, and partnering with a Professional Sports Authenticator are all strategies aimed at finding these new revenue streams.
