As a long-time fan of the Borderlands series, I must admit that my excitement levels were sky-high when the latest trailer for Borderlands 4 dropped at The Game Awards 2024. After what felt like an eternity of radio silence from Gearbox, it was refreshing to finally get a glimpse into what awaits us in the Kairos world. However, as someone who has spent countless hours customizing and bonding with my Vault Hunter characters, I found myself a little underwhelmed by the initial reveal of the new playable characters.
Borderlands 4 unveiled an exciting new trailer during The Game Awards 2024, following the anticipation built by Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford prior to the event, hinting at gameplay footage as well. After a period of silence regarding their upcoming project, Borderlands 4 made its initial appearance at Gamescom 2024, disclosing minimal information about the title other than Lilith’s return and her mission to crash Elpis into another planet. The recently released trailer for Borderlands 4 showcased a broader perspective, as it introduced The Timekeeper as the main antagonist, depicted the struggle between the Order and the Rippers, offered glimpses of gameplay, and even presented the four playable Vault Hunters for the first time.
In the context of Borderlands 4, the Timekeeper character carries heavy expectations following Handsome Jack’s villainy in Borderlands 2. However, it’s the gameplay and the Vault Hunters that might attract more attention from the audience. The gameplay was not extensively shown in the TGA trailer, but there appears to be a new vehicle for players and at least one of the Vault Hunters will possess a grappling hook ability. However, some fans have voiced their disappointment on social media regarding the design of the playable Vault Hunters.
Why Fans Are Not Happy About Borderlands 4’s Vault Hunters
In the context of Borderlands 4, the new playable characters, or Vault Hunters, face a significant challenge to meet the high praise garnered by their counterparts in Borderlands 3. As of now, details are scarce regarding their narratives, dialogue, and unique abilities. For instance, one character appears to have the ability to swing across the map using grappling hooks and hurl elemental axes at enemies, while another wields energy blades. However, it’s the design of these Vault Hunters that has sparked discussion among the gaming community at large.
How BL4’s Vault Hunters Compare to Past Games’
The main criticism posed by fans is that the new BL4 Vault Hunters look bland, which is not necessarily to say that they are poorly designed, but more that past entries in the series had more cartoony, over-the-top, sometimes otherworldly or simply sci-fi looks for their characters. This can be seen with the techno-ninja aesthetic of Zer0, the animal-tamer robot that is Fl4k, the fiery Siren Lilith, and more. In Borderlands 4‘s new Kairos world, filled with breathtaking vistas, the new Vault Hunters can seem a little too on the “basic human” side.
The future may reveal more about each Vault Hunter’s backstory, which could significantly alter our overall understanding of them, including their abilities and motivations in the struggle between The Order and The Rippers. One character appears to be a Siren, indicated by the tattoos on their model, but the specific powers they will possess are yet unknown. The unique pink glow of these tattoos suggests a previously unseen power among the Vault Hunters of Borderlands, though this has not been definitively confirmed yet.
Why There Could Be More Than Meets The Eye With Borderlands 4’s Vault Hunters
In essence, the outer appearance of the Vault Hunters may not fully reveal their backstory, despite appearing rather ordinary compared to past playable characters. It’s important to remember that previous games in the series offered some level of personalization, such as head skins for characters in Borderlands 2 and the advanced customization options introduced in Borderlands 3. Notably, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands expanded upon this with a comprehensive character creator system and additional features. Consequently, it’s reasonable to expect that some degree of customization will be available for Vault Hunters in Borderlands 4 as well.
