As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a bit of nostalgia mixed with disappointment upon hearing the news about Elden Ring: Nightreign. I remember the days when cross-play was unheard of, and consoles were like fortresses guarding their own exclusive gaming experiences. It’s a bit disheartening to see that some things haven’t changed.
Over these past few days, I’ve found myself immersed in the hustle and bustle at FromSoftware as we grapple with the excitement generated by our epic reveal of Elden Ring: Nightreign at The Game Awards. We’re doing our best to keep the community informed and manage expectations as we journey together towards this highly anticipated game.
For games heavily reliant on cooperative multiplayer, the question arose among players if there might be updates beneficial for friends using different gaming platforms.
To prevent any rumors from getting out of hand, FromSoftware game director Junya Ishizaki came out today to clarify that no, there will not be cross-play between platforms.
According to Ishizaki, Nightreign will follow a similar system to the original Elden Ring title.
This feature enables gamers using consoles from the same console family to play cooperatively across different generations, even though they don’t have access to other console types.
According to Ishizaki, it’s possible for PlayStation 4 users to play with PlayStation 5 users, as well as for Xbox One users to play with Xbox Series S and X users. However, there is no cross-platform compatibility, meaning they can’t play together directly.
Albeit this was expected, it is nonetheless disappointing news, in an era when even some executives behind the consoles have taken a more amicable tone towards competitors.
For those eagerly anticipating a multi-platform journey, the upcoming update of Baldur’s Gate 3 in next year should excite you as it plans to incorporate cross-platform play, making the Larian Studios’ success accessible across various gaming platforms.

As an ardent PC gamer, if you’ve been eagerly anticipating Elden Ring: Nightreign and had hopes for cross-play, I regret to say there might be more disappointments coming your way.
As stated on the official Bandai Namco website, the network playtesting for Elden Ring is exclusively available on the PlayStation 5, as well as the Xbox Series S and X consoles.
It’s no surprise, given FromSoftware’s past practice of excluding PC gamers from early network testing, but it’s still disheartening all the same.
Other journalists have raised concerns about security, noting that data mining is simpler for those who analyze PC game builds compared to console versions (even though some resourceful individuals still attempt it).
Beyond gaming antics, FromSoftware finds itself amidst corporate speculations, as whispers grow that Sony is making moves to buy the Japanese media conglomerate, Kadokawa.
According to director Junya Ishizaki, there’s no update on the current status of negotiations, or whether they are still ongoing.
Regardless of whether Kadokawa maintains secrecy with its subsidiaries or Ishizaki excels at bluffing, none of that would make a difference if Elden Ring: Nightreign delivers well in 2025.
