- Story follows Fuuko with “unluck” ability and Andy who just wants to die, pursued by Union.
As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of anime and manga, I must say that the anticipation surrounding “Undead Unluck” was palpable. The global release was highly anticipated, but it seems that Disney’s schedule might have dampened its international performance a bit, much like how rain spoils a perfectly good picnic.
I’m absolutely thrilled about the upcoming anime sensation, “Undead Unluck”! Ever since it was announced as one of the new Shonen Jump titles, I’ve been eagerly anticipating its release in 2023. The global distribution news only fueled my excitement, but it seems that Disney’s schedule might slightly impact the international reception – contrary to what happened with “The Apothecary Diaries.
Due to various reasons, many people could have overlooked one of the outstanding series that concluded by the end of 2023. Initially, it boasted an impressive action-filled animation that caught everyone’s attention. However, it seemed to lose steam among viewers as it presented 24 consecutive episodes without a break, which might not have been the optimal strategy for this particular series.
For those excitedly waiting for more, it’s officially confirmed that there will be fresh updates about the earlier announced 1-hour special at the upcoming Jump Fest 2025. Contrary to its name, Jump Festa 2025 is actually scheduled later this month in Japan.
What We Know So Far
Information on this upcoming special is somewhat limited. Initially, it was set for Winter 2025, but more recently, a new poster suggests a later release date in late 2025. We might learn about a new release window and potentially see another trailer at Jump Festa 2025. Here’s the teaser trailer that was released several months ago:
Undead Unluck Anime Story and Staff
Originally titled “Undead Unluck,” this manga first appeared in the renowned Shueisha’s Shonen Jump magazine. The author behind it is Yoshifumi Tozuka. Similar to other titles from Shonen Jump, it’s also distributed in the US by VIZ Media, a company under the same parent organization as Shueisha. Since 2020, it has been serialized and collected into 23 volumes as of now.
The narrative unfolds a decade following a tragic event that claimed the lives of many, including Fuuko Izumo’s parents. At the time, she was merely eight years old and since then, has chosen solitude due to her unique ability to bring misfortune upon others. Surprisingly, what she yearns for most is romance. One fateful day, she encounters another unusual individual – a man who longs for death. This being is an immortal, despised by his own existence, which Fuuko humorously names Andy, mimicking the Japanese pronunciation of “undead.” He associates with her, hoping to exploit her misfortune in order to achieve his goal – eternal rest. However, they soon find themselves pursued by an enigmatic organization known as Union.
In this anime adaption, both TMS Entertainment (responsible for Lupin III) and David Production (known for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure) are involved in its production. The direction is handled by Yuki Yase, who has previously led the team as director of Fire Force. Meanwhile, Yamato Haijima, with credits that include Fire Force, takes on the role of head writer.
Undead Unluck is available to stream on Hulu.
